Happy Birthday to the iconic musician Sting !
The British musician is one of very few pop superstars from the 80s that is still active and part of today´s music industry. Sting, born as Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, was introduced to music at an early age by his musical parents. In the beginning of his musical career, he was the lead singer of the legendary band The Police. The combination of reggae, punk and soul, created by Sting and his partners Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland, plus their charismatic performances made them stand out from the other punk bands at that time. This originality, talent and the fusion of different musical styles that came together was unprecedented.
After five very successful albums as a band, Sting decided to start his solo career which was to become incomparable. With songs like “English Man in New York”, “Fields of Gold” and “Desert Rose” he became a pop legend on his own rights.
In the following years, Sting has worked with artists such as Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel, Shaggy, Ricky Martin, Craig David, and even played at the Queen's birthday party in 2018.
He has won a total of 17 Grammy Awards, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, plus "Every Breath You Take" and "Roxanne", each of them written by Sting, appeared on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Of course, the had to get this star in front of their camera lenses, as we can see in this portrait of Sting, taken by Alice Springs.
Fun fact: a befriended musician came up with the nickname “Sting” because Sumner was wearing a stiffened jumper during their first encounter, that reminded him of a bee…
