How do filmmakers make space in societies that are not inviting?
Hiwot Admasu Getaneh has the answer. Wide-eyed and beaming with infectious energy, Getaneh, who originally pursued engineering, is an expert at problem-solving and is a filmmaker who is making space; for both herself, in the Ethiopian film industry, and through the characters she chooses to represent on screen; characters that resist the unspoken omnipresent messages society, that come in the form of tradition, oppression, and placation, which attempt to put them in their place, or worse, remove their space.
