💡 Transforming Lives Through Youth Diversion in Philadelphia! 💡
Philadelphia’s youth of color face disproportionate trauma and its lifelong consequences, often leading to juvenile delinquency and systemic involvement. Arrests and formal processing further expose them to trauma, hindering education and employment opportunities, and perpetuating a cycle of reoffending.
Enter Students Run Philly Style (SRPS) and the MileUp program! In partnership with the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, MileUp diverts youth ages 11-17 from the criminal justice system to community-based programs. Through long-distance running and mentorship, SRPS fosters positive relationship-building and identity development, while restorative interventions hold youth accountable in a supportive environment.
MileUp offers a path away from the justice system with program milestones like earning paid restitution, dropped charges, and expunged records. With the backing of mentors, youth advocates, and peer mentors, the program significantly boosts resilience, community engagement, and a positive outlook for the future. Collaborating with Drexel University’s Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice, MileUp nurtures lasting healthy habits and relationships for Philadelphia’s youth.
