The Holy Cross of Davao College won as the OVERALL CHAMPION for this year's Davao Culinary Cup season 7.

The students of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management Education (CHATME) displayed their dedication and hard work on the last day of the Davao Culinary Cup Season 7, kicking off a launch towards their victory.

This event has various categories such as creative breakfast, western cuisine challenge, local fish or seafood, and themed display.

The Davao Culinary Cup Season 7 started yesterday and will end this coming May 25, 2024.

UPDATES | During the afternoon session of CEDAS XI 2024; Educators all over Davao Region gathered to acknowledge the existence of Artificial Intelligence and its ongoing effects within the Educational System; Leveraging, integrating and developing policies to regulate its ethical use within Higher Education as the primary goal of this year’s conference.

A positive light was shone on the use of AI within academic institutions such as self-regulated learning, workload reduction, and providing training resources, but along with it comes concerns on originality and plagiarism, data privacy, and application readiness.

USeP, Associate Professor II, Dr. Randy Tudy, urged the educators and the people to continue the debate and discussion on the use of AI for the community to craft direct policies and objective guidelines. Discourse on its limitations and ethical considerations are encouraged to continuously evolve; fostering a better integration for the future of students and all higher educational Institutions.

UPDATES | The Council of Deans and Educators for Arts and Sciences in Region XI (CEDAS XI) General Assembly and Conference 2024 kicked off with the theme "AI Dexterity: Reinforcing Arts and Sciences Educators in the Future Landscape'' held at The Sedes Sapientiae Auditorium of the Holy Cross of Davao College.

Higher Educational Institutions are continually empowered to sustain and level up the Arts and Sciences for these are main catalysts for innovation through collaborations and updates on recent policies that foster a better future for educational institutions.

Digital transformation calls for educators to become leaders who find solutions and walk the talk despite the ever-changing adversaries in the modern world.

BA COMM UPDATES | Last May 3, 2024, the 1st Year Bachelor of Arts in Communication hosted an enlightening film showing the event, showcasing two documentary entries at the St. Maximilian Kolbe Communication Hall as part of their subject Comm 113 - Communication, Culture, and Society.

The program was skillfully orchestrated by the first-year students, who also hosted the event. The first documentary, Hiraya Uno led by Prince Abanggan, featured the lives of two individuals who take arts and sign-making as their main source of living. Through interviews and showing glimpses of how they do their work, the audience witnessed the hard work of these artisans and the persistent challenges they faced.

On the other hand, Hiraya Dos led by Artheo Lausa, featured the story of an elderly photographer who roams around the City Hall of Davao searching for customers. He stated that it’s an everyday struggle to find customers, especially since people nowadays have cellphones, and he sometimes gets sad seeing a family taking a picture as he doesn’t have one of his own.

The documentaries had a big effect beyond just telling a story; they made people cry, empathetic, and touched hearts. Afterward, Mr. Jacques Axid Rosello, the COMM 113 instructor shared thoughtful commentary about the hard work of the students behind the documentaries.

Despite the struggles encountered by the first-year students in the documentary creation process and program hosting, their perseverance pushed through, making the film successful and leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. The event not only showcased the talent and dedication of the students but also showcased the inspiring stories of the subjects.

UPDATE | The Department of Trade and Industry Region XI launched its “Davao Film Festival: Salida Dabawenyo” which aims to sustain and foster the film and audiovisual creative sector and foster a greater appreciation for filmmaking in Davao City last May 2, 2024 at SM Davao Annex Event Center.

Davao’s local film experts, including Basane Fiola, Fe Hyde, Franky Arrocena, Jay Rosas, Jeff Sabayle, and Keisha Halili, graced future filmmakers from different schools, sharing their experiences and knowledge to empower the future generation of the film industry. Meanwhile, Randolph Lan Alama brought back the history of filmmaking in Davao, sharing that the City is no stranger to film production.

“Davao is not a stranger to film production; it once had an active Bisayan film industry in the 1950s well into the early 1970s. Sadly, prints of the films from that bygone era are nonexistent, with only a few old-timers recalling the movies,” Alama shared.

During the audience question period, a student asked the resource speakers about how they could produce a film with zero budget. Fe Hyde, a film producer, shared a story where a student asked for her rate to be an actor for their school film, and she generously offered her services for free. She also offered her house to be their headquarters and allowed them to use her car for transportation. After Fe shared the story, Jeff Sabayle was reminded of his humble beginning on how he started with zero budget wherein he first connected with people with the same passion for producing and loving film rather than earning from it. Bagane Fiola and Keisha Halili agreed with Jeff, who also said that “X-deal” can be considered in sustaining film production even with a limited budget.

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication of Holy Cross of Davao College participated in this forum to empower new knowledge that will instill the importance of film production in Davao City through its involvement, not only reinforcing its presence within the film industry but also demonstrating its cultural and historical ideas in the filmmaking.
