Taking Back Your Voice

After spending forty years in San Diego broadcasting, William Tayari Howard had paid close attention to the decline of radio/television ownership among minorities. With that decline he also noticed the absence of having a voice in the day-to-day scheme of things whether it was politics, education, economics, religion, current events, etc.

In 2013, and after starting a successful Smooth Jazz internet radio station, he founded a second entity, kblkradio.com It’s purpose was to galvanize local communities by sharing their voice and perspectives in subject matter content that would be interesting to a global audience. He discovered that many issues and problems taking place right in front of him were also being experienced around the country. Subjects such as gun violence, kids killing kids, police brutality, homelessness, mass incarceration, affordable housing, gentrification, the lack of integrity in our government and its affect on our election process and many other subjects.

Instead of training the community to be professional announcers and journalists, he began looking for those who already had a platform, had something to say and wasn’t afraid to say it over a microphone to anyone willing to tune in, subscribe to, or download a free radio app in order to become enlightened, educated, entertained and open to the new technology.

Finally with the help of a few educators, he was able to convince them to try a pilot project of sending 9th through 12th grade students into a business classroom where by they could be mentored in the business of broadcast media arts and social media dissemination. By combining STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), related subjects, he created Project:R.E.A.D.Y. (Radio Education and Development of Youth), a twelve week on air radio course where students shared their perspective on provocative subject matter dealing with guns on campus, kids killing kids, cyber-bullying, teen su***de, date r**e, campus life and other subjects aimed at adults and current events. Coupled with video cameras and social media platforms such as You Tube, Facebook, Snap Chat and websites, students were able to “take back their voice.”
