Happy last day of January 2023 🙂

This is the last prep day for me in this 5am Club Challenge and I have to say, I am feeling confident but also pretty clear about my need for a routine/schedule on this journey because I can literally spend time doing a million things and not get the main things started until it’s almost time to leave/go.

I am crushing this ‘no snooze button’ situation which is shocking to me. I hope the snooze button doesn’t feel abandoned lol

It’s 6:30am right now and I have already gotten coffee, recorded a podcast

It’s time to journal, read, workout and meditate - and maybe even write a quick paper before the world wakes up.

On a side note, we are in Fort Myers for a real estate retreat right now and the people here are so wonderful. They were BADLY hit by a storm in the Fall - businesses and restaurants and hotels devastated, hundreds of boats just destroyed and sitting in ‘boat graveyards’ and homes demolished.

Our 3 days of conference probably won’t change lives for the community, but every bit helps. Big ups to Richard Robbins and the team for making an impact. It matters.

Here’s to one more sleep before we challenge it up 🙂

My February 2023 5AM Club Challenge: Prep week, T-1 day

This morning was definitely more of a challenge.

Key points:
It was definitely more difficult to get out of bed without pressure (yesterday, I had to get to the airport and starting Wednesday, I will have a small group of rockstars checking in with me at 5:15am for a zoom call).

I did not bolt of bed happily (like yesterday with the music) but I also did not press the snooze button and go back to bed. I was up and out of bed by 5:07 :)

Going to bed early definitely helped (win) but eating late and having drinks made me feel a little more sluggish.

The key to remember for the actual challenge is that there will be obstacles:
1. My amazing husband values HIS sleep too and does not want to be part of the challenge. I need to find a way to get up immediately without the help of music - unless I can rig up the headphone situation lol

2. My birthday, and Nashville trip, both take place this month. I think the best way to do the weekends is to still get up early and rock the routine but then from 6:30 to 9, come back to bed and read or snuggle up.

Also, KNOW thyself: anything I do over and over will eventually get boring without a little bit of change up. The weekends will be helpful 🙂

Last but not least, there is freedom in the routing. Between 5am and 7am, I coffee, journal, exercise, meditate and read - in whatever order I choose.

The key with anything is to make it authentically YOU. And have a WHY.

I am doing this to show myself that I can, and because I have been inspired by a former classmate who seems to be crushing this lifestyle.

A la Buffini: If they can do it, I can do it 🙂

Rock the day!

Day 2 of the Prep for my 28 Day February 5am Club Challenge 🙂

I got out of bed this morning at 5am (note that I fully broke up with my love of the SNOOZE button *even I am surprised*

I immediately rocked out to some fun songs and made a coffee. I am going to the gym for 20 minutes (and reading) after I spend 20 minutes journaling and figured out the new airport app meant to help me save time in the line ups this morning.

It is currently 5:32am and I am ready to rock this day 🙂

One of my friends made a really good point too ps: we should definitely do weekends too. I would be willing to do the same thing on weekends but it’s tough to say if I will get the benefit without a bit of a sleep in? I have 2 days to get on board - which is key because I am recruiting accountability partners LOL

Keep smiling friends 🙂

February 5am Challenge - If you write it down, it’s happening. Right?!

T-3 days

Soooo I was super tired last night. To put things in a bit of perspective, Brett and I travelled across the World on January 12th 2023 and headed to India for 10 days. The journey was long, the experience was EPIC, albeit incredibly busy, and the journey back was even longer (over 30 hours). Returning to our sub-arctic Canadian weather was enough for my body to DEMAND extra rest this week so my usually energetic and fit KLML attitude was a little more dim.

In Yoga, we thought we had a lot of skill and knowledge. Until, that is, we did a Yoga class at the Karnavati Club in Ahmedabad, India with Mansi. Even the local India people in attendance were struggling lol. This class was intense and awesome - but not a ‘flow’ to be found.

Back to the challenge.

This morning, after falling asleep before midnight last night (exhausted, and opting out of my workout for the 4th day this week - a first), I had the idea that I would try to get up at 5am.

I quickly dismissed said idea. Who is getting up at 5am on a Saturday who isn’t in some sort of penitentiary?!

Magically, though, I WOKE UP AT 5am (to go to the bathroom, but still) and I was not in the usual groggy state I have been in the past.

Is this it? Is it happening??

I hemmed and hawed about whether it made sense to go and actually get up and do a workout. I was fighting off a cold, and likely needed rest. But doesn’t my body heal faster with exercise??

I read in bed for about 45 minutes and then got up. I was going to go and do this workout, have a coffee, journal, sauna, and then return to bed and snuggle with my very adorable husband.

BUT
then his foot went searching for me in bed. And in his sleep, he searched for me with his arms. *heart melt* No need to ruin his sleep with dream-worries. Decision made, for now, that I would rest up and wake with him a few hours later.

No regrets. I did a 10 minute meditation and work up 3 hours later.

Let’s see how I do tomorrow at the hotel before my flight to a real estate conference. I have some high hopes because I actually HAVE to get up at 5am to make my flight situation work.

What I noticed:

While I am the snooze button’s biggest fan, it does add grogginess to the mix.

I need an actual plan about what I am going to DO when I get downstairs. Generic “workout” isn’t enough.

I may need to switch to a 6am wake up after the challenge
but the 5am is my goal.

I would LOVE someone to expect me on a call of some sort at 5am but not be able to be late. Recruiting others may be the key here.

Being that we just got back from vacation, our bedroom is a wee bit of a disaster. We had to do ALL of the laundry, and now have to put all of the travel stuff, laundry etc away. A clean room is easier to get up in. (Thanks Mom for that gem for life xo)

Stay tuned
Excited for this journey :)

Good morning and happy last Saturday of 2023 to all :)

It has been a little while, but I wanted to share some insights and upcoming challenges that have proved to be intriguing.

I recently embarked upon the journey of becoming a certified Yoga instructor with Yoga Renew. I have my exam to complete, and then I will be ‘official’. In all honesty, time to teach yoga is not something that my life can accommodate right now. That said, learning to teach yoga has been an eye-opening and beautiful experience.

On this journey, which started when I had a bit of a health scare last Summer, I learned that yoga is NOT just a slow/boring workout but in fact a life-changing and beautiful interaction with God (or whoever/whatever you believe in) and your mind, body and soul.

My husband, Brett, and I had done some hot yoga in London before, but it didn’t really stick for me. After starting the teacher training (which came up as an opportunity to learn how to be a better teacher in general), I began to really understand the deep relevance of this beautiful art.

In Winnipeg, I found a beautiful hot yoga studio called Yoga Public, and it was amazing. Blessed to have the opportunity, this studio actually closed just a couple of weeks after we left. In London, we found a similar studio, Oxygen Yoga and Fitness. It is an amazing space (only made better by having the change room and shower space that Yoga Public had). We now have a date night every Sunday that we’re in town and it is a game changer.

For the certification, I kept putting off the exam because you only get one try and I wish I had done the exam while I was studying originally because I need to prep again to get it done.

For personal growth, another challenge I am looking at is the elusive ‘5am club‘ challenge. I have tried before, without success and have learned from some of my successful friends and colleagues that it comes down to your evening routine and getting enough sleep.

Side note: I LOVE sleep. It’s one of my favourite things to do, which sounds almost sad if not heavenly.

There are alternative wake up strategies as well, such as the 6am wake up or the 6:30am.

I feel like trying the 5am club challenge for 30 days (week days) is a pretty cool idea. Apparently, over half of the most successful people in the world wake up at least 3 hours before their work day starts for exercise, reading, meditation and journaling. All things I already have passion for.

But can I do it before the sun graces us with its presence every morning? Maybe :)

2023 may end up being the year of challenges for me. And because my search for a legitimate, accountability-based 5am club challenge came up empty: here we are.

I don’t want to assume that people will be as crazy as I intend to be and do all of these challenge, but if you are reading this and you want in, just let me know. I always want to help each other be better :)

Each challenge will have a lead up of 3-4 days so the first day is a softer start. Here is my draft list of challenges:

Challenge #1: February 5am Club Challenge
Challenage #2: No Candy, Sugar or Chocolate Challenge
Challenge #3: April no personal shopping/online shopping
Challenge #4: May 45 minutes of outdoor activity every day
Challenge #5: June 30 minutes of swimming daily
Challenge #6: July 15 minutes of meditation daily
Challenge #7: August Donate $20/day to charities
Challenge #8: September Call/text/visit 2 friends/family per day
Challenge #9: October No caffeine
Challenge #10: November Knit for 30 minutes/day
Challenge #11: December Play guitar 15 minutes every day

Stay tuned for my next post about this journey
and then for my daily check in for accountability.

Let’s do this :)
