China’s experimental music and sound art scene began to take shape in the post-Tiananmen era in the late 1990s. A few musicians from the mainland’s underground music scene started to experiment with new ways of making music while the music industry co-opted the once revolutionary and independent rock music scene. The Hong Kong based experimental musician Dickson Dee and the U.S. based artist Dajuin Yao introduced Western avant-garde, experimental music to the mainland through the Internet and through the organization of music tours and festivals.
The Unexplained Sounds Group label is proud to present an anthology of experimental music from China, showcasing veteran musicians alongside many young and promising artists from the contemporary underground music scene.

There is something a bit creepy about an abandoned building, knowing that it was once full of life and is now empty, often crumbling and taken back by nature. It’s even more haunting when it’s a monastery. Over the centuries many monasteries were closed and abandoned for different reasons and have varied historic significance, but have one thing in common. These architectural marvels stand empty and abandoned, providing a fascinating, mysterious and sometimes creepy look not only into the past, but also into their ghost like present.
Eighth Tower invited 15 musicians from all over the world to create music and soundscapes inspired by abandoned monasteries and aiming to evoke the psychological effect they have upon us.

"The Washing Planck" is a wordplay that arises from the curiosity of connecting everyday objects, such as a simple plank that can be used for washing or storing clothes, with the name of the German physicist Max Planck, the initiator of quantum physics, and a repetitive action over time. The inspiration behind these works comes from the principle of path integral, a formulation by Richard Feynman that describes the probability of a particle moving from one point to another within a given timeframe. Similarly, the infinite variety of paths that a generative system can create is the basis of The Washing Planck's first work, "Integrale sui Cammini" (Path Integral), an album of minimalist experimental electronic music. The album consists of two tracks titled "Cammino A" and "Cammino B" (Path A and Path B), representing two of the infinite possible paths created with the same instruments and generative patches; two of the infinite unexpected journeys that begin with the press of the "PLAY" button and end with the press of the "STOP" button.

The new Sonologyst "sonic documentary" delves into the secretive realm of shortwave transmissions; a chronicle of clandestine shortwave transmissions culled from a span of nearly four decades (1982-2021). These mysterious transmissions - repetitive voices, signals, sound pulses, short pieces of music - were collated and edited to compose the tracks of the main album. Immersed in an isolating fog of dark ambient, deep drone music and cinematic sound art, it provides an auditory exploration of the ongoing Cold War. Originating from covert radio stations engaged in military and espionage endeavours, the tracks unveil a hidden sonic landscape of strategic communication.
The second disc, in its extensive presentation, provides a deeper immersion into these enigmatic broadcasts. Each recording remains unaltered, accompanied only by a ghostly drone. It offers an unfiltered glimpse into the world of clandestine communication, where words are transmitted beneath the radar and in the shadowy confines of the electromagnetic spectrum.
