Let's rack up those plant points! From Dr B, The Gut Health MD:

"Every single plant that exists—every single fruit, vegetable, whole grain, seed, nut, legume—has unique types of fiber that feed unique species of microbes. So when we focus on eating more varieties of plants, we are actually sending down into this system many different meals to feed many different microbes. In other words, variety on your plate translates into variety in your microbiome, which is exactly what you want."

Our gut is connected to MANY things and we have the capacity to improve the system! Be sure to tune into this fantastic conversation with Dr B, The Gut Health MD.

"These [gut] microbes are interconnected to so many more aspects beyond digestion, including our immune system, our metabolism, our hormones, our mood, our cognitive function, and even in the way in which we express our genetic code. The optimistic part of this is that the science is showing us that the gut microbiome is adaptable and we are the ones who can make choices that can actually make changes within the system."

Here for the positive, compassionate approach of Dr. Federica Amati!

"I always encourage people to start with the things that they're proud of; for example, “I've been eating oily fish or colorful meals every week.” And then look at the things you can improve and add that are beneficial for health. And in that improvement trajectory, what we don't focus on is what needs to be restricted, because that is not helpful."

For your next grocery run... thank you, Dr. Federica Amati!

"Whole grains are by far the best dietary intervention we can make to help reduce the risk of chronic disease. If everybody added some whole grains to their diets—things like buckwheat, pearl barley, spelt, quinoa, and steel cut oats—we would be in a much better place in terms of global health."

So here for change and impact at every age! From Dr. Federica Amati: "I would go as far as to say that nutrition is the most important part of prevention—every choice ends up compounding into an outcome. The earlier we intervene the more compound effect we’re going to have, but it's never too late to benefit from making change. There's plenty of science that shows that changing your diet later in life can have a profound impact on quality of life, cognitive function, and functional ability, which is so crucial if you want to maintain independence later in life."

From Katie Fogarty: "You don't have to know how things are going to end to get started. I think if we need a clear ending to get started, we're doing ourselves a disservice. If there's something that you think you're a little itchy to get going on, but you're not really sure how it's going to end, work on letting that go. You don't need to know."

Let's get noisy! 📣 Thank you, Katie, for bringing your perspective and energy to this conversation!

"I fully believe we should be able to age out loud in all the spheres and spaces of our lives, including our professional lives where sometimes it's a little bit harder. We shouldn't hide the fact that we're experienced. There's so much wonderful juiciness that comes with having an experienced career. There's wisdom, expertise, finely honed skills, judgment, and perspective. All of these things that can only be acquired through steady application through aging."

Yes,👑. From Mimi Ison:

"Your body's going to speak to you, you need to listen to her. You need to take care of her like the queen she is, so she can take care of the queen you are. Literally put her on a pedestal and revere her and take care of her. You’ve only got one."

YES to being a beginner! From Mimi Ison:

"Midlife is a great time to be a beginner. If you're a person who's used to doing everything well and not failing and being reluctant to try something because you don't want to experience those feelings, well, just let that go. Because if you're a beginner, you're supposed to be lousy, and that's the fun of it. And you should embrace that and prove to yourself that you can commit and learn and improve. And that kind of satisfaction is like nothing else."

THIS, from the glorious Mimi Ison.

The “nos” and “can’ts,” especially if they're associated with your age, are going to inform your behavior. If you think you can't do something, then you probably won't try to do it or you won't learn about it or you won't be open to it. If you attach so much power to age, it's going to be a problem.
