“I’m seeing something I’ve never seen before. An
epidemic of anxiety in children. Eleven-year-olds with anorexia, 13-year-olds not going to school. And these are kids from beautiful families, these aren’t neglectful parents. I’m seeing 15-year-olds who are frankly suicidal. It’s profoundly disturbing.”
-Dr. Rosen at the MUST (Mothers Unite to Stall Technology) event.

What does a mother say to the child she must give away in order to save?
In 1988, Rishe Deitsch read a book about child-rescue missions in the Holocaust. She couldn’t imagine what she would do if she was in the impossible position of those Jewish mothers. So she pulled out a pen and began writing.
“Dear Mirele,” her emotional letter from a mother giving up her daughter, was originally published in the N’shei Chabad Newsletter anonymously.
From there it went viral. (However viral something can be before the days of social media.)
Teachers brought it into their classrooms, Rabbi Sacks read it in a speech, and it was republished in many magazines and one book. JTV even adapted it into this film!
But in today’s day and age, when Holocaust denial is rampant, it is crucial to differentiate between fact and fiction.
Although the occurrence that Rishe described in her letter is based on true stories, and the emotions she evoked were surely experienced by countless mothers during the Holocaust, this letter itself is fictional.
And that must be made clear.
Find the Sukkos Hamodia, in stores tomorrow, to read an interview by Ruth Lichtenstein with Rishe Deitsch, explaining the full story behind her letter.
