After a fantastic seven-year run as Festival Director, Eddy Kara has announced that this year would be his final year as Festival Director of MIWAFF (Montreal International Wreath Awards Film Festival).

During this time as the one in charge of the Film Festival, Eddy has redefined the new era of film festivals by successfully promoting not just Canadian and Quebec films, but also international ones, and by making sure that filmmakers, in particular, are recognized for the great contributions of their craft through an exemplary democratic process.

Eddy Kara was first elected in 2016 as Festival Director, after having won the Best
Director Wreath Award in 2015 for his feature film “The Sociopath’s Guild”, a film that
received 7 Wreath Award nominations at MIWAFF. Since his election, Eddy led the
festival through some tough times. When the film festival industry started becoming
saturated and fragmented, he persevered by still focusing on staying on the core
message of MIWAFF - the promotion of democracy. This was first done, in 2016,
through the change in the selection process of Jury members, ranging from cast and
crew members in the film industry. Then, these members viewed all the submitted films and voted rigorously for nominees and award winners. Instead of pawning off categories of films to only a select few people who decide those films’ fate, which most festivals still do, MIWAFF chose to keep the more representative and democratic approach.

During the wake of COVID-19, Eddy led MIWAFF to the digital realm, by rapidly shifting the in-person events to put in place videoconferencing and online streaming
methods via our website miwaff.com.

“We are proud of the contribution Eddy Kara has made to MIWAFF and the international film community. A world without its artists is a world without culture. He will forever be a transformative figure for all of us.”
-Mardig Bidanian, Board of Directors member & Communications Coordinator.
*************************************************************************************

communications.
