Osinbajo Backs Chess Master, Onakoya's 58-Hour Guinness World Record Attempt

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has extended his best wishes to Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya, in his attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon on Wednesday.

We gathered on Saturday that Onakoya, the founder of Chess in Slums Africa, announced his plan to play chess continuously for 58 hours without losing a game from 10am on April 17 to 8pm on April 19 in Times Square, New York City.

Onakoya said he was doing it "for the dreams of millions of children across Africa without access to education.”

Police arrest four for faking their kidnap and demanding N5m ransom

Detectives of the Lagos States Police Command have arrested Margret Itodo ‘f’ aged 25, Agnes Ogbeh ‘f’ aged 23, Esther Anyanwu ‘f’ aged 24 and Anthony Chinakwe ‘m’ aged 24 for faking the kidnap of Agnes Ogbeh.

A statement released by SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson of the command, said on March 19, 2024, Agnes Ogbeh, resident in Akure, had travelled to Lagos and was reportedly kidnapped in Lagos. The family back in Akure received a video showing Agnes and one other tied, gagged, and groaning with blood droplets around them. The ‘kidnappers’ demanded the sum of Five Million Naira for the release of Agnes.

‘’Upon receipt of the complaint, detectives of the Command commenced a discreet and diligent investigation into the matter. The hideout was located where Agnes, the other lady in the video and two others were found living freely together.

Further investigations revealed that Margaret Itodo is a professional make-up artist who was hired to make the video look real. All four have made confessional statements and are to be arraigned at the conclusion of investigation.’’

Hundeyin added that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, mni while commending the detectives for a timely investigation called on Lagosians to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity around them to the nearest security agency.

Meta to introduce feature that allows Nigerian creators to monetise their content.

Meta - the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads - is set to launch a new feature on its Instagram and Facebook app in June 2024, aimed at empowering Nigerian creators to monetize their content and earn a livelihood through the platform.

This announcement was made by Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, following a meeting with President Tinubu at the presidential villa earlier today, March 21.

Speaking after the meeting, Clegg expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for facilitating an executive order crucial to the landing of Meta-backed deep-sea cable infrastructure in Nigeria.

He said, “It is an extraordinary infrastructure project. When it comes on stream in the first quarter of 2025, it will be twice as much as the capacity of all subsea cables that exist.

“We buried the cable 50 per cent deeper than any other subsea cables under the seabed.”

He further emphasized the cable’s potential economic impact, saying: “It could yield up to 37 billion dollars worth of increase in economic activity in the next two or three years across the African continent.”

Clegg added: “We have a lot to do with Nigeria to deepen partnerships.”

Announcing the new feature, he said: “We will, in June 2024, introduce a feature on our Instagram app that will allow Nigerian creators to monetize their content to enable them to earn a living using the app.”

A 22-year-old student of Sheikh Kamaldeen Arabic School, Ilorin, Kwara State, has committed su!cide.

The student, identified as Alfa Musa, was found hanging in his room at Dagbenu compound in the Ogidi area of Ilorin on December 7, 2023.

Spokesperson of the state Police Command, DSP Ejire Adetoun Adeyemi, who confirmed the development, disclosed that an investigation has commenced into the incident.

The PPRO said the deceased left a su***de note addressed to his parents.

“To my mum and dad, I am sorry, I did this because God did not answer my prayers, I will rather d!e than commit sin, please, forgive me, I love you, bury me at home," the note reads.

It was gathered that one of his friends paid a visit to his residence on the day of the incident but found the door to his room locked.

After repeated knocks on the door, there was no response, yet he was in the room, hence the door was forced open and the deceased was found hanging.

An empty paint container which he allegedly used to hang himself was also found in his room.

A neighbour described the deceased, who hailed from Osun State as a devout Muslim.

Meanwhile, one of his colleagues posted a video from the funeral prayer.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked for the senate's approval to borrow $8,699,168,559 and €100 million.

The Nigerian leader who noted that the loan will be used to execute critical projects in different sectors, also stated that the request was part of the federal government's 2022-2024 external borrowing plan approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Tinubu's letter to the senate read;

“I write in respect of the above subject and to submit the attached the federal government 2022-2024 external borrowing plan for consideration and early approval of the National Assembly to ensure prompt implementation of the projects.

“The Senate may wish to note that the past administration approved a 2022-2024 borrowing plan by the federal executive council (FEC) held on May 15, 2023.

“The project cuts across all sectors, with specific emphasis on infrastructure, agriculture, health, water supply, roads, security, and employment generation as well as financial management reforms.

“Consequently, the required approval is in the sum of $8,699,168,559 and €100 million.

“I would like to underscore the fact that the projects and programmes in the borrowing plan were selected based on economic evaluations as well as the expected contribution to the social economic development of the country, including employment generation, and skills acquisition.

“Given the nature of these facilities, and the need to return the country to normalcy it has become necessary for the Senate to consider and approve the 2022- 2024 external abridged borrowing plan to enable the government deliver its responsibility to Nigerians.”

President Bola Tinubu will on Wednesday, November 29, present the 2024 budget to the National Assembly.

The Federal Executive Council earlier today November 27 approved the 2024 budget of N27.5 trillion.

This followed the review of the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework earlier passed by the National Assembly which benchmarked the exchange rate at N700 to $1 and crude oil price at $73.96 cent per barrel.

Briefing State House Correspondents shortly after the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, said it revised the MTEF and the Fiscal Policy to use an exchange rate of N750 to $1 and also a benchmark crude oil reference price of $77.96 per barrel.

According to Bagudu, the FEC also approved an Appropriation Bill for 2024 with an aggregate expenditure of N27.5 trillion, an increase of over N1.5 trillion from the previously estimated.

He also noted that using the old reference prices, the forecast revenue is now N18.2 trillion which is higher than the 2023 revenue, including that provided in the two supplementary budgets, in which the deficit is lower than that of 2023.

PHOTOS: Israel-Hamas Truce Enters Final Day

The truce between Israel and Hamas entered its final 24 hours Monday, November 27, with militant group saying it was willing to extend the pause after it freed more hostages.

The pause that began Friday has seen dozens of hostages freed, with over 100 Palestinian prisoners released by Israel in return.

Attention now has turned to whether the truce will be extended before its scheduled end early on Tuesday morning.

Under the truce, 50 hostages held by the militants were to be freed over four days in exchange for 150 Palestinian prisoners.

According to AFP on Monday, November 27, Israel faces enormous pressure from the families of hostages, as well as allies, to extend the truce to secure more releases.

Three successive days of hostage releases have buoyed spirits in Israel, with tearful reunions weeks after Hamas militants poured across the border on October 7, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli officials.

In response, Israel launched a military campaign to destroy Hamas, killing nearly 15,000 people, mostly civilians and including thousands of children, according to Gaza's Hamas government.

The third group of hostages released Sunday included a four-year-old American citizen called Abigail whose parents were both murdered in the Hamas attacks.

Sani Yakubu Noma, a member of the House of Representatives, representing Argungu/Augie Federal Constituency of Kebbi State at the National Assembly, said he has concluded arrangements to marry off 100 female orphans in the state.

Speaking to journalists at his hometown in the Argungu area of Kebbi State, the lawmaker said the marriage plan was part of his contributions to the welfare of orphans in his constituency.

He said the marriage ceremony will take place at the Palace of the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammad Mera on Saturday, Nov. 25.

He said: “A committee has been set up for the successful implementation of the event. Those selected to be married out were drawn from the two local government areas that I’m representing at the National Assembly.

“Already, I have procured beds, mattresses, essential furniture and other matrimonial commodities for the beneficiaries.”

PHOTOS: 29 Premature Babies Evacuated From Gaza Arrive In Egypt

Twenty-nine premature babies arrived in Egypt on Monday, Egyptian media said, after they were evacuated from Gaza's largest hospital which has become a focal point of Israel's war with Hamas.

The infants were evacuated Sunday from the Al-Shifa hospital, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has described as a "death zone" as Israel seeks to uncover what it says are Hamas bases in tunnels underneath the facility.

The state-affiliated Al-Qahera News reported that the babies arrived in Egypt via the Rafah crossing, the only entry and exit point to the Palestinian territory that is not controlled by Israel.

An initial 31 babies were reported evacuated from Al-Shifa to another Gaza clinic and it was not immediately clear why only 29 arrived in Egypt.

Al-Qahera News said that the babies transferred on Monday were placed in incubators.

A medical source told AFP not all the infants would be able to be treated at El-Arish hospital 45 kilometres (28 miles) west of the Gaza Strip.

"There are not enough incubators at El-Arish hospital, and some babies will have to be transferred to Ismailia or Cairo," the source said.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Sunday that 31 "very sick" babies were moved in a joint operation with the UN and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.

Doctors found that "all the babies are fighting serious infections due to lack of medical supplies and impossibility to continue infection control measures in Al-Shifa Hospital", the Red Crescent said.

None of the babies had been accompanied by family members during the initial evacuation, the WHO said, as the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza was unable to locate them.

A Facebook user, Umar Suleiman, penned a heartfelt note on Sunday, as he remembered his daughter, Khadijat, who was kidnapped seven years ago.

He shared photos of his child on his page on Sunday, as he expressed hope that she would return home.

Suleiman wrote, "Today is November 19, it won't come and pass without me remembering you Khadija.

"It's seven years since you were forcibly taken from us. It has been my prayers for us to be united one day.

"To your abductors, your nightmare has just started. To you my daughter, Daddy has not and will never relent. Allah is always, and will always be with you."

PHOTOS: 23-year-old Nicaraguan Wins Miss Universe 2023

Twenty-three-year-old Nicaraguan model and beauty queen, Sheynnis Palacios, was crowned Miss Universe 2023 at the 72nd annual beauty pageant held in San Salvador on Saturday night.

Sheynnis outshone 83 other candidates, making history as the first delegate from Nicaragua to win the Miss Universe title, Daily Mail reports Sunday.

Sheynnis is no stranger to pageantry, having started competing in national pageants at the age of 16.

On the coronation night, Sheynnis consistently progressed to the next rounds, with strong performances in both the swimsuit segment and the evening gown competition.

According to the Miss Universe organisation, Sheynnis' goal in life is to "work in the service of humanity, by running a newsroom and producing content and commercials for international brands."

In addition to Sheynnis' victory, the event saw several more historic firsts, including two mother candidates, two transgender women, and a plus-size individual.

The new beauty queen was crowned by last year's winner, USA's R'Bonney Nola Gabriel.

Release Mohbad's Body, Autopsy Results, Bella Shmurda Urges Police

Nigerian artiste, Bella Shmurda has appealed to the Police to release the remains of his late friend, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Taking to his X account late Saturday, Bella Shmurda expressed concern over the prolonged delay in the release of Mohbad's body, which has been held for autopsy for the past two months.

He appealed to the Police to expedite the process and release the body to facilitate a dignified funeral arrangement. Additionally, Bella Shmurda requested the prompt disclosure of the autopsy results.

He wrote, "It's been over 2 months since Moh died and his body was taken in for autopsy but yet no result, which is fine but please release his body. That boy needs a befitting burial and to go to rest. finally, Naija Police, what's going on? we need an answer here: where is the result? Where is his body?"

The investigation into the demise of the musician is ongoing, with the Nigerian Police having exhumed the body for an autopsy. Despite more than a month passing, the Police have not disclosed any new findings from the autopsy that could contribute to resolving the case.

Mohbad died in September under questionable circumstances, with videos of the singer being bullied and assaulted resurfacing after his demise.

Biden, Xi Resume Military-To- Military Communications

The United States President, Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have agreed to resume military-to-military communications.

The leaders met on Wednesday, November 15, in San Francisco to discuss issues that caused strained between both nations relationship.

Biden in a statement on the verified X handle of the President Of America (POTUS) Thursday, November 16, said that the United States will compete vigorously, and responsibly, with the People's Republic of China.

He noted that, they will protect their national security interests, stand up for their values, and work together where it is possible and in both nation's interests.

Biden's statement read in part, "Today, I'm announcing that the U.S. and PRC are resuming military-to-military communications.

"Clear and open communication between our defense establishments is vital to avoid miscalculation by either side and prevent conflict.

"The world expects this of responsible countries.

"Today, President Xi and I took tangible steps in the right direction, and the case I've made all along stands".

EFCC finally brings Emefiele to court

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finally produced the former Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, in court for the hearing of his bail application.

Emefiele has been in the custody of Security agencies for over 149 days. Last week, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court ordered that the former CBN boss be released unconditionally or be brought to hear his application for bail.

Dressed in a yellow Kaftan and a cap and flanked by operatives of the EFCC, the former CBN Governor arrived at the courtroom at about 12:30 pm.

Chef Hilda Baci has congratulated Irish Chef, Alan Fisher, who emerged as the latest Guinness World Record holder for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

The Guinness World Records on Tuesday disclosed that Fisher from Ireland cooked for 119 hours and 57 minutes at his restaurant in Japan.

Armed Men Attempt To Kidnap Neymar's Daughter, Partner

Professional Brazilian footballer, Neymar Junior, had big scare on Tuesday, November 7, as the house of Bruna Biancardi, the mother of his newborn daughter Maive, was invaded and robbed by a criminal gang in Cotia, in the state of Sao Paulo in Brazil.

According to the R7 newspaper, Biancardi's parents were on the scene at the time of the robbery and were tied up but were not injured, a sports website, Marca, reports Tuesday.

The Municipal Civil Guard said one of the suspects, who has already been arrested, is a resident of the condominium where the Biancardi family had a house and would have allowed the other criminals to enter.

Two of the suspects were armed and were looking for Bruna and Mavie, the daughter of star striker Neymar. Both were not at the residence at the time of the invasion.

Neighbours called the authorities after noticing that something strange was going on in the house. The agents surrounded the property and managed to arrest one suspect, who was a resident of the condominium. The others fled with luxury handbags, watches, and jewellery.

Neymar has not yet made a statement about the incident.

BREAKING: Doctors Amputate Mr Ibu's Leg To Keep Him Alive

A new statement from the family of actor John Okafor, aka Mr Ibu, disclosed that one of his legs has been amputated to keep him alive.

News surfaced in October that the veteran actor was ill and required financial assistance to aid in his treatment.

In the statement shared on the actor's Instagram page Monday, it was revealed the actor had undergone seven successful surgeries, including the amputation of one leg, in a bid to keep him alive.

The statement read, "Good afternoon, Nigerians. We want to appreciate everyone who has come through for our dad; saying we are grateful is an understatement, and only the good Lord can thank you all enough for every help you've rendered.

"As of 1 pm, noon today, Daddy has gone through 7 successful surgeries, but to keep him alive and increase his chances of recovery, one of his legs had to be amputated.

"This development has been hard on us all, but we've had to accept it as Daddy's new reality to keep him alive.

"Please, we are still soliciting support from well-meaning Nigerians as, at this stage, Daddy is still very delicate, and he needs all the help he can get.

"Thank you, everyone, the Okafor family is grateful and we don't take you for granted. In due time, Daddy will personally acknowledge everyone who supported him during this period as soon as he's stable."
