The Mahi put out 20 watts each in triode mode and 40 watts in ultralinear. I appreciated the additional power of ultralinear, but the tonal quality of triode mode was the winning ticket for me. The ultralinear mode accentuated the sharp edges of notes that became tiresome while the triode mode softened them up slightly and gave the music a healthy share of liquidity that benefited the MACARIA....

Every one of my reviews starts with a straightforward yet profoundly simple premise: “If it’s interesting to me, it’ll be interesting to you”, with my pedantic brain focusing on the concentration of quality while keeping the enthusiasm unbottled. Regardless of technology, novel ideas, or price tag, many modern DACs can still sound harsh and one-dimensional. This is often closely associated with streamlined manufacturing, which Abendrot escapes by all means, drawing its design choices from an impressive track record working with some of the most renowned studios worldwide.

The remote for the Mk2 was not available, so a PS Audio system remote had been tweaked to run the DAC. A note with the packaging instructed the owner to use two buttons that were reprogrammed to give full access to the Mk2’s features. TAGA Harmony's Nostalgic TH12 is an interesting-looking loudspeaker with real sonic ability and charm, especially on well-recorded programme material. Whether you like the styling is a personal matter, but there's no denying that a pair of these will quickly become the focal point of your listening room. Overall, it's a solid thumbs up for this design, which offers very good value for money—especially when you factor in the bundled stands. Do try to audition a pair if you get the chance.

Everything feels like it was designed to work together and the result is very enjoyable. The power output might struggle with something truly demanding, but a significant amount of testing takes place with the Focal Kanta No1 (HFC 454), which doesn’t prove a challenge for it at any stage. Furthermore, the forensically revealing speaker doesn’t reveal anything significantly amiss with the way that the RS201E makes music.

The SP3000T is beautifully designed. On the exterior, you’re greeted with a silver-plated body and hairline finish. (There’s also a Copper version of the SP3000T available as well). A glass panel adorns the front and rear panels, the bottom 3/4 of the back panel being matte. The top portion features those twin glowing red vacuum tubes. The right edge of the player features a volume wheel, which has an LED light that flows out. It’s illuminated in different colors depending on the bit depth of the music that’s playing.

There is roughly a 5 dB drop from 20Hz to 200Hz with less presence from the sub-bass right up to lower mids. Thereafter, or from around 1k there is roughly 2 dB less elevation than the default tuning up to 7k so vocal imaging drops back a little creating a slightly more relaxed midrange presentation. Switch 3 also has more treble energy than the rest of the switch options and it’s the option where you can best hear the EST driver’s presence on higher-pitching instrumental timbre.
