I am guilty of tsundoku, but pleasantly proud to also have read many. Though for six months past, I have not been diligent in my reading 📖 I miss not having time to jump into the tale of pages, where one is entirely consumed by the writing… and nothing else exists. A vacuous process where eye meets page, and one is just there - inside the character’s mind - feeling, touching, believing everything going on - books that consume my senses… ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

CBCA BOOK WEEK QUEST … Let your imaginations go wild!

In my poster image for the 2023 CBCA Book Week Theme, Read – Grow – Inspire, I decided to do something a little different from previous years artists by creating a challenge.

There is an element or a thing in the picture for every letter of the alphabet.

The words don’t have to be real words, they can be whatever you want - so long as they make sense within the context. The words can be the name of a thing in the image, e.g. S for Starfish, or it could be something about the thing, e.g. A starfish has five legs so you might want to use the letter F. Or it could be a feeling, e.g the bird of paradise could represent freedom or wonder. See if you can come up with a word for each element in this painting and for each letter of the alphabet.

The feedback I've received from Uki Public School (in my hometown) has been fantastic. I particularly love the students who have thought outside the box to find answers to the difficult letters, e.g. X. One student has come up with Xavier (being perhaps the name of one of the children riding the seahorse). I personally was thinking of a few possibilities for X when I made the poster – all being real and recognisable things (hint: use a dictionary to help you). One of my favourite responses so far is “Jellyfly” (based on the butterfly that has a blue-bottle jellyfish body)….now that is using your imagination!

Have fun with the challenge, and keep thinking outside the box! There are no right or wrong answers….the point is to take the time to dream up your own list.

I hope you have enjoyed my challenge, and hopefully future artists for the Children's Book Council of Australia will be inspired to set their own challenges too.

Three wonderful angels with whom I spent my Bologna Children's Book Fair journey - they were my family for the week - SRL Publishing, Pantera Press and Dead Ink. We learnt, studied and soaked up everything about books and publishing. We shared our tips and tricks; enjoyed the incredible talent of illustrators and authors; benefited greatly from publishing professionals who have been in the business a lot longer than us. We laughed, smiled, cried and hugged - making great memories and friendships that I pray will keep us in fine inspiring and motivational stead, until next we meet. I pray that will not be too long.
