LinkedIn polls offer the potential of getting significant visibility for you and your brand - but also the potential to tarnish your reputation if used in a spammy way!...

🟠 LinkedIn polls are particularly effective in two scenarios: getting broad market feedback or when targeting a niche segment with a poll question that is relevant to them.

🟠 They can also be used to spark conversations and generate client enquiries.

🟠 To make sure your poll reaches as many people as possible, try and ask questions that can be easily answered by most people who will see them and encourage people to add a comment to their vote for additional insights and reach.

🗝 The key to success when it comes to generating leads through social media?

💡 It's not just about posting content.

In fact, the most successful businesses are those that focus on combining three things:

✔️ Growing their accounts with an audience of prospects
✔️ Gaining the trust of that audience by being consistent in their posts
✔️ Experimenting with how they convert this audience into genuine leads for their business

Out of interest, which of these do you do in your business?

📣 Do you want your company brand to be more visible on LinkedIn?

Well here's the trick...

Focus on using the personal profiles of you and your team to get your company brand out there!

Why?

⚠️ The LinkedIn algorithm doesn't give much visibility to company posts compared to posts from individuals ⚠️

So if all your efforts go into building a company page and sharing posts via the company page, you'll only reach a modest audience.

vs.

Putting that same effort into getting your company brand shared by individual team members will multiply your visibility and results!

BONUS TIP: if the individuals are people who actively engage on LinkedIn then the results will be magnified further still.

🔍 If you're in any doubt this is true, just think how few company posts you've seen in your feed today (and most you have seen were probably "Sponsored posts", ie. the company has paid to have that post seen)

If you need help with this, feel free to head over to the Social-Hire website and we'd be happy to arrange a call.

Sometimes LinkedIn's own suggestions are really odd...
.. like the prompts for you to reshare someone else's post if you find it interesting.

🤔 The reason that's odd advice?

Because reshared posts perform terribly!! 😲

You may not have enough visibility of this from your own account. But from our vantage point of seeing how hundreds of people's posts are performing, the stats are very clear.

Reshared posts only get a fraction of the reach that a brand-new original post (of the same content) achieves.

So if something is worth sharing, it's always worth creating a new post rather than simply resharing.

Did you know that already? Hopefully it's helpful advice for many of you seeing this...

🦸Here's a LinkedIn superpower for you!!

We were reminded of it on our call with LinkedIn Expert trainer Mark White, a snippet of which is included here as a quick, actionable tip...

🔎 The superpower? Learning to make use of all the search functionality that LinkedIn offers, even on a free account!

The majority of users are barely scratching the surface when it comes to leveraging this. But the ability to search for posts (just from your network or from the broader LinkedIn community), to search for companies in target sectors, to search in-depth for people / prospects... all these and more are things that most people aren't aware you can do or aren't using to their full potential.

Are you?

👎 "My reach has gone down so much on LinkedIn"

We hear this all the time!! Want to know what one of the key reasons is?

❌ It's not that your posts are less interesting or engaging than before.

✅ The real reason is that the LinkedIn platform has evolved and is rewarding certain types of posts with additional exposure in the feed.

What does that mean for you? Well, the people sharing those types of posts are getting a greater share of the visibility - and because you're not sharing those types of posts, your overall share of visibility on LinkedIn declines.

👉 When video first came out, it was video posts that were especially rewarded.

👉 More recently it's been PDF shares and LinkedIn polls.

If you've seen your post reach decline of late, try doing a few of these in the coming weeks and you should see a turnaround in your results.

What have you been seeing happen to your own posts' reach of late, out of interest?

❓ What can I post that will get me more engagement on my posts?

This has to be one of the most common questions we get asked - and is also one of the BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS that people have about posting on LinkedIn.

I hope that spelling this out can help some of you reading this to get more of the engagement you are craving...

FACT: two people can post exactly the same content at exactly the same time and get wildly differing engagement on their posts.

🤔 Why is that?

The reason is that the biggest driver of engagement on your posts isn't what you post - it's how much you have engaged with other people in the preceding months.

There are 2 key reasons for this:

1) Humans are reciprocal beings. If someone comments on something you've posted, compliments you, starts a conversation, engages with you... well, the next time you see a post from that person, you are more inclined to interact with them in turn.

2) PLUS social sites like LinkedIn magnify this - because their algorithms are always trying to determine what they should show you in your homepage feed... and if two people have interacted with one another, then that's a signal to the algorithm that it should show each of those two people more of the other person's posts.

So if you're someone who's eager to start driving more engagement on your posts here (or indeed on any other social media site), try taking some of the time you are spending on posting and diverting that to instead spend more time on engaging with other people. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the results!

⚠️ The importance of your LinkedIn headline is often overlooked!

Your LinkedIn headline is the most visible space you have on LinkedIn to remind people about your expertise and who you can help.

👀 It's seen pretty much every time you do anything on LinkedIn.

Think of your headline as an opportunity to showcase your unique selling point (USP). What makes you stand out from the crowd? What are you known for? Why should people want to click through to look at your profile and learn more about you?

If you can answer these questions succinctly in your headline, you'll be well on your way to attracting more of the right people to your LinkedIn profile.

In light of the above, how does your LinkedIn headline rate?

🚀 How can I get more engagement (relevant engagement) on my social media posts?

Well there is no magic formula, but here are a few tips to get you started:

✅ Make sure your posts are helpful and insightful for your target audience.

✅ Experiment with using different content formats, as social media sites show people the types of content they are most likely to engage with. So you need a variety of post types (text-only, video, polls, PDFs, etc.) if you want to reach everyone.

✅ Try to be genuine and authentic in everything you post. If you look at the posts that get the most engagement, often they are the ones that are raw, genuine and authentic.

✅ Write catchy headlines that capture people's attention and make them want to read the whole post.

✅ Include a question in your post, as this encourages people to respond and starts the snowball effect of getting more and more engagement on your posts.

✅ Be sure to engage with your followers by responding whenever someone comments. The more you engage, the more people will engage with you in turn!

I hope that was helpful advice. Are there any of these you could be doing more of?

❓ Your LinkedIn network - is it better to build a targeted or a broad network of contacts?

There are arguments can be made for both, but in conversation with Jen Corcoran we were advocates of going down the focused network building path.

Just some of the reasons for this include:

1. Greater visibility for your content if the first wave of people who see your content are interested in it.

2. What you see in your homepage feed is derived from your network, so the more focused your network the more relevant the content you see on LinkedIn is.

3. You appear higher in relevant search result pages if you have a targeted network on LinkedIn.

What has your approach to this been, out of interest? Any other reasons you'd add for choosing one approach over the other?

We've all been on the receiving end of these, right?!...
.. pushy sales messages in your LinkedIn DMs, often within hours of accepting a connection request. 🙄

But if that's not the right approach to getting conversations started with your new connections, what is?

Delighted to say this was covered in our LinkedIn Experts Q&A session with Beth Granger, the short clip of which you'll find below.

Hope it helps (are you using LinkedIn voicemails already?) - and are there any other approaches you have found work well? Would love to read about this in the comments!

LinkedIn Polls: 👍 or 👎 ??

Used well, they can be a great way of starting conversations with your network - and making yourself a valuable industry expert for people to be connected to.

That's what we talked about in this discussion with Mic Adam, who's been using LinkedIn Polls extensively and shared what he's learnt in one of our LinkedIn Experts live calls...

This has to be one of the ⭐ most important topics ⭐ we've covered in our LinkedIn Experts live calls.

🤔 Does what you post here matter?

That may sound like a crazy question...
.. but it's to draw attention to the fact that what you post is only one part of the success equation here.

Let's illustrate the point - two people can post identical content here and can get wildly different results.

👍 One person gets loads of visibility, likes and comments

👎 The other person's post withers and dies with barely an interaction

The reason for this is that one person has invested in growing and nurturing a network and relationships here; the other person hasn't.

Yet, if you look at a lot of what gets discussed when it comes to getting better results from social media, it's often fixated on posting:

⚠️ What should I post?
⚠️ When should I post?
⚠️ Which platforms should I post on?
⚠️ What's the best tool to schedule posts with?

These are all minor questions that will have only a small impact on your results - compared with the much bigger question:

📌 what can I do to build relationships here and get many more conversations started?

Answer that question, and you'll rarely have to stress over what to post again.

Make sense?

This one should be a help to all Solopreneurs!

Should you prioritise building your LinkedIn presence through your personal profile...
.. or through growing your company page on LinkedIn?

Speaking to Jen Corcoran, there are good reasons to have both. Not least because you may want to be able to advertise in the future - and right now, that can only be done through a company page.

Personal profiles tend to get more visibility though, for everyone who's got more than a tiny handful of contacts.

Hope this is good food for thought - and what's your approach been to date?

⚠️ Fake profiles on LinkedIn ⚠️

How can you spot them? What should you look out for?

In their least harmful form, fake profiles are being used to spam users. In more sinister cases, they can put you at risk of being defrauded.

So how can you protect yourself?

Some thoughts were shared here in our Q&A session with LinkedIn expert Judi Hays.
