One of my favourite Christmas presents this year was this Playmobil Martin Luther, who is holding his translation of the Bible. He's now standing on my desk to inspire me as I work, although I'm quite glad I get to use a keyboard and not a quill...

I stumbled across this delightful comic by Itchy Feet comics today - for anyone who, like me, has been bemused by some of the "English" words used in the German language! http://www.itchyfeetcomic.com/2016/11/das-wrongword.html #.WD78qlwhmO8

Today I am doing some editing, using the Rodopi style guide. Very tickled to find this as a sample entry:
Fawlty, Basil (forthcoming), ‘Translation Studies and the Specific Needs of the Hotel Industry’. To appear in Trade and Translation Quarterly.

How nice! I freelanced as a language editor for the Journal of Official Statistics for five years, and when this came to an end they sent me this beautiful book to say thank you for my work.

Today I've been working on a translation about (among other things) cat content on the Internet. As someone notorious for sharing pictures of my cats on social media, you can imagine I've been enjoying this! I have also been ably supervised...

Some Friday giggles for you!

Nicht wahr?

How many English words does it take to express one German word? I'm currently rehearsing a beautiful setting of Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd") by Franz Schubert with my choir, the Lucy Cavendish Singers. I have to keep smiling over the fact that in this German version, the phrase "the valley of the shadow of death" (7 words) is only one single word: "Todesschattental"!

One of my favourite things about my office is that I am constantly being visited by small birds, who hunt for insects in the thatch. Usually they move too quickly for me to capture, but today I managed to get a photo of a little coal tit! Other visitors so far today include a sparrow, great tit and blue tit!

As a translator (as with most professions, I guess), it is sometimes easy to feel that your work doesn't make much difference to the world, especially in the face of the many atrocities taking place on a daily basis. Today I am working on a text written by a renowned international law scholar on how the international community and more specifically the International Criminal Court should respond to the Paris terrorist attacks of a few days ago. I am grateful to be involved in a project that might, in however small a way, contribute to addressing these terrible events.

Just published: a recent translation for the European Journal of Criminal Law on the topic of the Armenian genocide (or maybe not genocide...read the article and you'll see why this term is problematic).
http://www.ejiltalk.org/the-armenian-genocide/ -13332

No-one can reasonably argue with the clear statements made by German President Joachim Gauck in his speech on Armenia held on 23 April 2015: “one hundred years ago, hundreds of thousands of members of the Armenian people” became “the victims of planned and systematic murder”. It is probably also acc…

Looking forward to attending a translation workshop organised by ITI's Media, Arts and Tourism network on "Best Practices in Tourism" - we'll be covering issues such as what types of text tourism translators work with most, what linguistic challenges are involved, and how to diversify into related services like copywriting and travel writing. I've not done a huge amount of tourism translations so far, so am sure to learn lots of useful things!

My interview with Scott Rank of Scholarpreneur on how I became a translator is now available as a podcast! Lots of advice on how to set up a business in general and how to become a successful translator more specifically. http://thescholarpreneur.com/spp-003-lecturer-full-time-freelance-academic-translator-margaret-hiley/

This week’s guest Margaret Hiley is doing great things as a private translator. She has a useful story for any academic thinking about entering the world of business but scared because the learning curve appears too steep. Her information is highly actionable, particularly for any academic who is bi…

I've been interviewed by Scholarpreneur, a site helping academics to turn their skills and qualifications into profitable ways to support themselves. A full podcast is coming soon, but you can already read a few words here: http://thescholarpreneur.com/13-academics-speak-no-hope-tenure/

It’s a situation none of us want to be. You’ve defended your dissertation, published articles, and even found a publisher for your monograph. Your research is top-notch and your reviews are glowing. But you can’t get tenure. Maybe your are adjuncting, but your department only opens up one tenure-t…

Back in the Middle Ages, this is what translation looked like - a far cry from the computer-assisted translation technology and online dictionaries of today! But this translating monk still looks serene as he goes about his business. http://bvmm.irht.cnrs.fr/consult/consult.php?VUE_ID=1316727

After a networking lull over the last months, I was properly back on the bandwagon this week: a social gathering of the ITI's East Midlands network of translators in Loughborough on Wednesday, and this morning a meeting of our local Rutland and Stamford Business network. Great to reconnect with colleagues and friends!
