Voi River bursts its banks after the ongoing heavy rains in the area early morning on 4th December 2023.

A statement by the humanitarian agency says the situation has caused flooding in the villages within Voi Town.

Dredging the river bed and banks is said to have caused several blockages on the river which led to the bursting of the banks.

Most residents have in the past blamed extensive sand harvesting and brick making along the Voi River.

The Kenya Red Cross is conducting a search and rescue operation for families affected by the floods.

This is the third river in Taita Taveta County to break its banks, causing heavy floods that have left families displaced.

Some 211 residents from 99 families sought refuge at the Kimondia market shed awaiting evacuation to safe ground.

A woman was mauled to death by hyenas in Nyacaba village in Juja sub-county on Saturday 2nd December 2023.

The angry residents of Nyacaba village blocked a section of Thika Road and prohibited the police from collecting the body of the dead woman.

"The police often come to collect bodies, but leave us with the problem of the hyenas. Today we have decided they are not collecting the body unless they hunt down the hyenas as well."John Mwangi a resident commented.

It is believed that the woman was heading to Ndarugu coffee plantation when the attack happened.

The angry residents needed the police to hunt down the hyenas first in order to stop incidents like this from happening again.

Another group of residents blocked the super highway on both sides at Ndarugu area protesting the attacks by wild animals.

The residents warned the Kenya Wildife Service to hunt down the wild animals because if they had an opportunity to capture the animals they would kill them.

Other incidents like this have been happening around various counties and it serves as a wake up call to the government to do something about it.
