My top 10 is heavily influenced by the few shows that did go ahead this year. Live music is so important. Hoping for a lot more of that in 2022 as this feels like the longest night of our lives // Merk dat mijn top 10 erg beinvloed wordt door de paar shows die wel zijn doorgegaan dit jaar. Dan merk je hoe belangrijk live muziek is. Hopend op een jaar met meer live muziek, want dit voelt als de langste nacht van ons leven.

I must say this year’s top 10 was rather tricky for me because I was mainly stuck in the past listening or rediscovering music from before 2021 and working on my own music with Mary Fields and Gizåh.
Here’s to going back to partying our t**s off at live shows in ‘22 again!

This day 10 years ago marked the day after the first ever Smithsfoodgroup DIY show. A show where we’ve learned a lot. We booked run,WALK! with Dead Neanderthals and Misery Kids in the Winston Kingdom, at the edge of Amsterdams Red Light District. We provided the English guys with food and a place to sleep and Max ended up ordering potato wedges thinking it was something special.

Everything was new for us and I still remember the soundguy was smoking w**d all the time and the only fee the bands made was through selling merch (which, in the end, helped funding their parking tickets since parking in Amsterdam is crazy expensive). This was the first and only show we put up without a fixed fee for the bands.

I still remember the three of us (Max, Marcel and Jeffrey) played a lot of Rolo Tomassi and *THAT* Bloc Party remix album in between the bands.
We even had few tourists buy tickets because we told them it was a band with drum and bass, since, well, run, WALK! uses drums and bass. Turns out the tourists meant drum'n'bass. OOPS.

Misery Kids ended up lost in limbo a few years later and also run, WALK! called it quits somewhere in the last 10 years. Dead Neanderthals was already alive and kicking back then, playing for the first time in Amsterdam, in between big festival shows at Venlo Zomerparkfeest and Incubate. We even released their album Prime on tape a few years back.

So here’s to life, to everyone who’s been patient with us and helped us in what has been a crazy decade. Here’s to another decade of heavy music, great people, beer and pizza.

Smithsfoodgroup DIY is a decade old today. Ten years ago we hosted our first show ever. There have been 97 shows since, each with on average three bands, as well as 76 releases. SFG is a team of five now, we started out as three, became four, became two, three, five. There's so many people to thank, despite being an often poorly ran "bedroom" label SFG has taken us places that we'd never thought possible and has cemented friendships. There's a handful of countries now that we know we've got beds at wherever we would like to visit. It's fcking fantastic.

Much love and thanks to Marcel for starting and Seline for being a part of SFG. Nikkie and Fleur for the early artwork. Alan, Fleur and Rutger for our logos through the years. Inge, Mike, Boris, the KitchenPunx - The Garden of Vegan and the whole crew at ACU. Desiree and the fantastic team she's build at CAPSLOC. Rick and Fedde. Jelle at Café de Vrijbuiter. Sammy and Justine at Church Road Records and Employed To Serve. Alex and Truthseeker Music. So many long gone labels that inspired us lots when we kicked off SFG (Partywound, Enjoyment, Tangled Talk, Flood and much more). Roelof and Eelco at White Russian Records. Thom and Daan at Complexity Fest, and Daan back at the Melkweg Amsterdam too. Vincent at Incubate Festival and Lungworm, who's made Jeffrey and myself scream out loud when we got to put on a show with Converge. The teams behind Avant.wav and Van Onderen. All the bands that played for us, at our shows, supported us and were excited to work with us. It's been a huge motivation. Everybody who ever came to a show, purchased a release, showed love online or supported us in any other way.

I'm sure we're forgetting loads to name. You've had such a positive impact on many lives. Thank you.
