This month in music history, Nina Simone recorded her trailblazing civil rights anthem “Mississippi Goddam” live at Carnegie Hall. Here’s PUBLIQuartet’s reimagining of four Nina classics: “Blackbird”, “Feelin Good”, “Young, Gifted And Black”, and “Mississippi Goddam”, recorded live at Brooklyn Sawdust.

The song “Mississippi Goddam’ was banned in several southern states, and according to Nina’s daughter Lisa, boxes of the records were returned from radio stations around the country cracked in half. 55 years later, in 2019, the song was selected by the Library Of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry.
