Spotify … The best of times and the worst of times.

While Spotify is a dream-come-true for new, struggling artists to get their music into the world to get heard it also quickly can turn into a nightmare trying to get noticed let alone paid.

Personally, as a listener I find really good new (and old) music on Spotify but I have to do the work to find it and build playlists. How about you? How do you use Spotify?

… Now as an artist publishing on the platform … well that’s entirely a different story.

Steve Hackett is a true guitar meistro... Love his playing in Genesis and as a solo artist... I've seen him many times over the years and he never disappoints.... Sadly it's the last of my pea forest post... Tomatoes are threatening! Stay tuned.

No, not the world around us … The Movie!

Recently, The Talking Heads released a restored 4K version of what is, according to many critics, the best concert documentary of all time.

I’m not one to argue this as I’ve seen it several times and love it more each time I watch it. I just wonder if the Zep (The Song Remains The Same) fans would have something to say about that … or even the ol’ Woodstock crowd.

Nevertheless, If you’re a Talking Heads fan Stop Making Sense is a wonderful concert experience … and I have a fun, personal story on this topic in my next post. In the meantime watch the movie and enjoy!

Enya - Orinoco Flow & Paul’s Scrambled Eggs?

"When asked about the backstory to the Guinness Record Breaking song “Yesterday” ( most recorded song of all time) Paul McCartney said …

“I just had this tune, and I now had some chords. And to solidify it in my memory I blocked it out with some dummy words: 'Scrambled eggs, oh my baby, how I love your legs, scrambled eggs.'”

The song “Waterfall” (listen here and follow on YouTube / Spotify) originally was written with the lyric at the end of the chorus being “Orinoco Flow” where the lyrics now are “Water Down Below”.

Like the currents of Enya's Orinoco Flow, inspiration inspiration flowed and melded into the ideas - from its lyrics to the imagery of the video and overall mood.

Enjoy, and follow on YouTube, Spotify and elsewhere.

My daughter’s middle name is Lorien.

If you’re an Enya fan you probably would have guessed it by now. Yup … Lothlórien. Here’s the backstory… (which my wife Beth always tells better than I do)

Just a few days before our daughter was born we were sitting with Beth’s parents marveling at the cute little package that was about to arrive, namely our daughter and incidentally our first born.

In a lively conversation we happened to be discussing girl’s names … out of the blue and at exactly that time our CD player (remember them?) turned itself on and started playing the song Lothlórien from Enya’s Shepherd Moons album. Here is the crazy thing tho … that song is the 9th song on the CD - It didn't even start playing at the beginning. Go figure.

As a side note, our daughter was born at home with Enya playing in the background.

I still get a lot of moments of inspiration from those Enya records back in the day. The song Waterfall is one of those.

The Song Within

Everything in the known universe (and beyond) is made up of vibrations and these vibrations are perceived by us humans through our senses in various ways. Most obvious to us are light and sound. Other more recently discovered vibrations, or waves are x-rays, gamma rays, ultra violet, infrared etc. To “see” these of course required us to develop specialized technologies that can see them and measure them.

But this channel is about songs, music and sound so let’s stick to that for the moment.

If everything in the universe is made up of vibrations and waves then it stands to reason that we, humans are also made up of those vibrations. (Just because we don’t see them doesn’t mean they don’t exist). It would be reasonably accurate to say that we all “resonate” at some frequency. In fact at several different frequencies depending on your given mood, state of mind and the state of your higher self (your soul). Which brings up the point of this post.

If we have frequencies manifesting in us it stands to reason that we all have a “Personal Song” (or several ) that describe us. At least to the universe at large if not necessarily in your office.

Everyone has a song inside them, everyone - it only takes a little effort to get it out from within and share it with the rest of the world.

Do you want to change the world? This would be a start. Your mindset (vibrations) creates your reality.

- Don’t let the bastards keep you down.

I love music and I love songs. There. I said it.

I don’t think this is surprising or controversial and I’m guessing that everyone here is the same.

Music (songs) has been a part of my life since the day I was born and I know that because it’s seared in my earliest memories as a child… (more on that later).

I was such a huge fan that I actually went on to make a career in the music business for a few years.

So because I’m not an overly talented musician or a gifted singer I chose to work in the production part of the music world and specifically in the live concert scene in the early days. Yup… straight out of high school and on the road. Good times. (More on that later too)

Through all the twists and turns and the ups ‘n downs over the years the one thing that stayed with me throughout the years is my love for music and,for the purpose of this venture, my love for writing and recording songs.

So why did it take so long to publish?? - well, you can guess the theme here … more on that later too.

Oh boy,

So I didn’t time the release of my song here to coincide with any current “events” but this just came across my screen … In fact I wasn’t even going to post “I Watch My Country Burn” as I felt the events were a bit dated but apparently not. I was going to post “Waterfall” … https://youtu.be/PHxKS6nQ2CA?si=iDrzcYC_Ck65iUfM instead, which I’ll pin here in a couple of days.

Anyway, another day another chemical fire. 😔 What’s going on??

07/11/2023

Hey fans,

Thanks for dropping by. I just want to post a quick note which I’ll pin here to give you a bit of an idea as to who I am and what to expect.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with my music or me personally, my name is Lex and I’m a songwriter / producer usually holed up in my production studio creating music. There are other things that pull me away from the studio but more on that later.

So what can you expect from me?

Right now I’ve really gotten on to writing and producing what can be best described as “Pop” songs. Not really “modern” pop songs but songs that have a sense of timelessness… something you may have heard somewhere along the way in the past… something that I hope will trigger a memory or a feeling to inspire you to do something to make your day just a bit better and more satisfying.

So if we’re going to pigeonhole this it’s probably best described as Alternative Pop or Alt Rock. Sometime it’ll be a bit more folky, sometime rocky and some others funky while others borrow from “light” prog. Yikes! Right??

Anyway, I love a lot of genres from the past decades and I pull inspiration from many of them to write and produce my songs. While most of my songs would be found on the usual platforms I will be releasing videos on YouTube for them so check it out. As alternatives I will be launching a Patreon Page for super fans with extra content and a Bandcamp page as well.

For now this is strictly a studio project so no live shows. (But perhaps some live cameos might be interesting hmmm 🤔)

Ok, that should do it for now. Enjoy my releases, subscribe, like, comment, playlist everything that you like to inspire me to make more great content and move forward.

Cheers,

Lex
