“Hearing from Indigenous people firsthand – people who are alive, whose lives are not static in a book or remain in the past – being alongside them is important to really internalize their struggles, their unique histories, and the rich history of resistance that they share with other oppressed sectors…Maybe we can see how their struggle isn’t separate from ours but deeply intertwined, if we are to survive on this earth.” – Sel,

In honor of National Indigenous Peoples Day in the Philippines, we wanted to share “IPALAMBO! Looking Past Preservation: Liyang Network on Solidarity & the Romanticization of Indigenous Culture” on hellapinay.com, originally from Hella Pinay 03: The Culture Issue. The article is a Q&A with Sel and T, two co-founders of Liyang Network, a local to global advocacy network that amplifies the calls to action of frontline environmental and human rights defenders in Mindanao, Philippines.

Have you ever felt like you were living a double life? This summer solstice we honor Pride and the end of Gemini season by exploring what it means to exist beyond the binaries of gender, ethnicity, and culture; how to maintain passion and creativity in a capitalist system, hope and happiness in a world engulfed by violence.

Joining us in the studio is our dear friend - who you may remember graced us at the .underground film rave back in December – an Oakland-based, Santa Cruz-born and bred DJ, pro domme, and peer advocacy counselor and community workshop facilitator for q***r and trans folks who have experienced police, hate and domestic, violence. Known for their high energy, slutty and sweaty sets, they’re a genre blending DJ who blasts their listeners off into sonic space with their c**t selections of club tracks, ethereal experimental, hard trance, jersey club, bass boosted hardcore, darkwave techno, and dembow💦

Tune in TONIGHT 6/20 on lowergrandradio.com at 6:30PM PDT/9:30AM PHT for your some deep discussion, genre-fluid mixes and all the DUALI-TEA

"A body in time, I am the impulse          of circuits seeking completion

                                                               of watersheds longing

for a steward to return.

May we be a confluence of rivers:

                              an estuary     dreaming

      a society iridescent and sourced

      a civilization with the                 multivalence

of water
                                                                                                              with the potential

                to be dredged

                                                      and undammed"

We're honored to share three previously unpublished excerpts from the first full draft of what became 's debut book NERVOUS: Essays on Heritage and Healing, now available exclusively on HellaPinay.com!!!!!

Recognized by TIME, GLAMOUR, and The Atlantic as a notable book of 2023, NERVOUS is an epic ride through Philippine history, personal history, the silenced history of American colonization, and exciting developments in the social neuroscience of trauma. They describe it as a love letter to bodies survived, and a vision of freedom through interdependence.

"This past year I had a lot of hard changes and griefs, both in my life and globally, and being creative has been one of the main parts of my healing progress and being more at ease. I chose to intentionally launch Kabute’s capsule collection in 2024 to experiment with more designs and play more with my friends. Kabute has been my main resource of play by mixing all the mediums I love and connecting with my spiritual healing practice." - Cat Calica

"It's healing knowing that this is going to be a message that many people are going to take seriously. I always say, “You need to be your own hero.” And this message will show other trans women like myself that we can protect ourselves the best way we can, with community support. This is how we build toward collective liberation and a world where trans women live openly and freely.

You know, people always say that history repeats itself. And I would love to be here for when history repeats itself and trans women see ourselves as spiritual healers, as medicine workers, as celebrated parts of the community again. That’s the world I want to live in." - Pearl Teese

tl;dr

To all the customers and contributors wondering wtf is up with Hella Pinay Issue 04, apologies for the massive delay >__< tbvh I haven't been able to raise enough funds to get it printed, hence why it hasn't shipped. Without the funding to push out this project, everything has felt frozen; it's been a major reason I've been so absent here and in general, in addition to just...the world.

Soooo if you love what we do and would like to help get this issue of the magazine into stores and into your homes, I humbly invite you to: 1. place a pre order or subscribe / 2. make a tax-deductible donation via our fiscal sponsor APICC - everyone who donates over $100 will get a personal shout out in Issue 04 / 3. buy a print or digital ad in the mag or on hellapinay.com / 4. hit me up about sponsored content/brand partnerships - Links in bio for #1 & #2, shoot me an email [email protected] for #3 & #4. I love you all and thank you to everyone who supports this work!!!!!

---

As you may have noticed, I haven't posted on here in a while. I don't need to say how much the world, and by reflection our hearts, have been in the deepest of turmoil. I've been sitting on this upcoming HP issue for so many months, frozen into inaction due to many factors; I feel bad that I haven't been able to raise enough to print it, am not super comfortable asking for help or support, haven't been utilizing the people who are down to work with me because I let personal and family issues affect everything. But when a brand is essentially all you, it can get to be overwhelming while also trying to survive in late stage capitalism. TBCH there's never been any marketing or outside investment or roadmap or strategy; I started HP as an IG account back in 2016 simply because i wanted to share about Filipino subculture and femmes and q***rs doing dope s**t and bring us together and spark dialogue, those of us who hadn't seen ourselves before in the media. (Cont'd in captions)

26/11/2023

"Growing up in Dagupan, I got bullied for being dark-skinned and trans. I took it upon myself to build a positive image for dark skin and remind people around me that they shouldn’t discriminate against others because of their skin.

Today, I’m glad that people are more open-minded toward women like me. I traverse the streets and people just say “hi, bes!” or smile at me. Sure, there are still a few who aren’t up to speed with our redefined standards of beauty and acceptance of q***r people, but I’m seeing positive changes day by day.

In a way, it feels great to be able to expand the possibilities that are out there for us trans folk, especially here in Dagupan. Through ballroom, I’ve seen that I can go far, I can be somebody, and I can do things that no one else has dared to try. I’m glad that I’ve widened my perspective about my future as a trans Pinay."

HP ARCHIVES: Queso de Bola + Chive Cornbread w/a Boy Bawang Garlic Crumble & Mike's Hot Honey Recipe by 🧀

"When I’m baking, I’m in my happy place and dream of flavors that bridge both my Filipino and American worlds. In the iconic Nicholas Sparks movie A Walk to Remember, Shane takes Jamie to the Virginia and North Carolina border so she can stand with one foot on either side of the two state lines. Thus, fulfilling her bucket list wish to be in two places at once. This recipe for Queso de Bola & Chive Cornbread Topped with a Boy Bawang Garlic Crumble & Mike’s Hot Honey is my Mandy Moore moment."

After a super challenging and seemingly relentless year and a half, I’m soooo excited to announce that Hella Pinay Magazine is back in print!! I'm so proud of this issue; it's our first one out since 2022 and I feel like so many setbacks, both personal and collective, were worked through to get here. Our cover star is Savina Rise Mizrahi, a 23-year-old Filipino-Sudanese Muslim trans woman from Pangasinan who's been killing it in the Manila ballroom scene. Lensed by Belg Belgica, the shoot was styled by Jodinand Aguillon using vintage and antique textiles from Glorious Dias (who we also worked with on the Pinay Zodiac and 9 Muses series, which still remain some of my favorite original content we’ve produced to date).

Pre-order Hella Pinay 04: The Fashion Issue by 11/28 to get our exclusive limited edition with alternate cover that will NOT be available in retail stores, and use code ‘PREORDER10’ for 10% off 🔗 in bioooo

Thank you so much for any and all support!!!! You’re the reason we’re still here - I love and appreciate every single one of you so much 🖤

“Agyamanak Ta Adadtoy Ka/Thank You For Being Here." Allyson Libao, 2023

"I just wanted to share my gratitude towards y’all, your radio show, and magazine for representing us weird brown girls. Listening and reading about different Fil-Am experiences has made me feel seen and proud to be Filipino.

I don’t normally share my art because it’s just a way for me to let out my energy, but I wanted to send you a photo of my latest painting/collage because y’all have inspired me so much. I used images from your last issue, as well as images from the Arts of Asia magazine when they featured the history of the Filipinana.

Print is so important and feels like a dying art in this digital age. Collage art has also helped me with the practice of letting go because I feel bad for cutting up a beautiful print magazine, but also knowing I’m using it to reflect and create something personal and meaningful to me."

I received this beautiful collage and email at the beginning of 2023, and it's something I've returned to many times over this past year when I've felt discouraged in this work and wondered if it still has relevance or meaning. Thank you to everyone for the constant outpouring of love and support. As we prepare to drop our next print issue, I just want to say: thank you for (still) being here. I’m looking forward to this next chapter with all of you.

"Humans are 30% fungal mass, like the mycelium network. And the first Mother Tree I have ever known – my Mama Mary – taught me that we are all connected and we must take care of each other. Inside of us exist the same roots… this mycelium that lives in the earth, lives inside of us. This is what kapwa really means. This is what it looks like when we say healing happens in community."

"Throughout history the terno [has] gone through several changes. Similarly, rattan has become a medium to pass down traditions of tribes that are applied endlessly to the agriculture and livelihood of Filipinos. The rattan terno...[takes] inspiration from the Bilaan tribe’s creation story in Southern Mindanao...I wanted to convey the resiliency of both objects by creating a rattan terno that showcases the butterfly sleeve similar in shape but not in its classic flat form. Instead, it’s loosely curved akin to molded pottery and the bodice is made similarly to a flat basket tied with abaca lacings on the side."

“I have a pair of trousers from my dad way back in the 90s. I got them altered and wore them every week for two years. It opened my eyes that clothing is meant to be worn multiple times. I think people are scared to wear something for a long period of time because they might be called ‘baduy’, meaning unfashionable in Tagalog.”
