Another news guild is striking…

The Buffalo Newspaper Guild stands in solidarity with the Newspaper Guild of Rochester as its members make the tough decision to strike in the face of unreasonable demands from their corporate owner, Gannett. As a Western New York neighbor, we have watched Gannett underinvest in the Democrat and Chronicle, its employees and the Rochester community for too long. We stand with the Rochester journalists and Guild members fighting for a so they can cover the news in the way readers deserve.

“Journalism matters.
We’ve seen the layoffs happening at major news outlets this week, leaving many crucial voices in journalism in the lurch. Whether you’ve been laid off, are in the industry, know someone affected or just care about the integrity of news, we see you – and we’re here to help.

Until the end of February, we're gifting our laid off journalist friends a year on Linktree Pro for free.”

Last weekend, I talked with Bob Batz Jr., who edits the strike paper. He sent hellos to former co-workers in Dayton and remained resolute about the strike.

Unions from both ProPublica and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette called out a “stunning and unacceptable” collaboration.

Join us for a picnic in the park to celebrate the Dayton Newspaper Guild. We're gathering former and current members, friends and family members for this late-summer get together. Catch up with former Guild colleagues you haven't seen in a while. Find out what current Guild members have planned for this year. There's a playground for the kids and ample parking. We have an alcohol permit for beer and wine only but please do not bring anything in glass bottles.

The event is Sunday, Aug. 13, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., at 2606 Hilton Dr., Kettering, OH 45409. (Note that access to the Patterson Shelter and parking is off Hilton Drive in Hills & Dales Park.) See you there!
