CULTUREWORK was founded on the idea that social justice cannot be achieved without cultural change.
Not every society has systems of oppression embedded in it. What are the values that bring these systems into being? How can we root them out, and when we do, how do we fill the void left behind?
Culturework is about healing and regeneration, demolition and creation. It’s about cultural exchange and talking about things we’ve been made to feel we aren’t allowed to talk about. It’s about imagining new ways of being and putting them into practice.
Founder & Editor Rebecca Bacon Ehlers is a writer, advocate, and master’s student at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. She has lived and worked in rural Oregon, Iowa City, and southwestern Burkina Faso. In its varied forms her work honors experiences of trauma and resilience, celebrates cultural divergence, and elevates the voices of those who live or have lived a feminine identity.
Arts Content Editor Eva Mayhabal Davis collaborates with artists to produce exhibitions, text, and events. As a curator and cultural liaison her focus is on supporting multifaceted incubation spaces in the creation of conversation, visibility, and production among artists, objects, and audience. She is an advocate for equitable cultural representation outside and within cultural institutions which has recently manifested in co-founding El Salón, an ongoing series of creative potluck dinners in NYC.
