The Oba of Benin during this period was Akenzua II who became the Oba of Benin in April 1933 after his father, Eweka II, passed away in February of the same year.

During his time as Oba, Akenzua II focused on bringing Western education to the Edo people.
In 1936, he started working to bring back the Benin Bronzes that were taken during the Benin Expedition of 1897.

However, only two out of the 3,000 bronzes were returned during his rule.
