Persistent oil theft in Nigeria have caused Africa's largest economy to lose its status as the continent's biggest crude producer to Angola, a new ranking that is not likely to change any time soon. The country loses 400,000 barrels of crude daily via oil theft, vandalism and security challenges.

Production fell below 1 million barrels per day in August, as the nation grappled with rampant theft from its pipeline. Nigeria slips marginally for the first the first time since April 2017, behind Angola's daily production rate of 1.17m barrel, according to Bloomberg's survey of monthly OPEC output.
