Concentrated, junior Ethan Lorber colors bookmarks that will be later donated to local elementary schools during the Hands On South Florida club meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 2 after school in room 226. The club is a non-profit organization that centers its activities towards serving the community. "I hope to do projects, help people," Lorber said. "I can [also] hang out with my friends."

Junior Coleman Campanella studies for the upcoming science Olympiad, organized by Science National Honor Society. Campanella was accepted to be on the physics team, which will be coached by physics teacher Kier Tarrazona. "Right now, I have a Five Steps to a Five book that I'm working on," Campanella said. "I'm doing kinematics right now, but it also has electromagnetic magnetism, so I plan on completing a bunch of questions in there."

Vice President Aidan Tau organizes competitors under which science category they're competing on for the the Olympiad. The Science Olympiad has five main categories based on Biology, Environmental, Chemistry, Physics and Miscellaneous, with 4-6 sub-categories that people can sign up for. "We're working on organizing practices currently, we have to talk to teachers, we have to make sure the teachers are okay with helping us out, and then we have to make sure we have the space to do it and that people are able to come," Tau said. "We are working on educating them on how each of their events works."

President Jiya Anand presents the times for practice for the Olympiad teams. She also spoke about possible fundraising methods for the the club like kickbacks, selling chocolate or extra member fees; Anand announced a competition for the T-shirt design for this year for the club. "As president, I plan all the meetings, I present all the meetings and I collaborate with all the team members to make sure the activities are as entertaining and interesting as possible," Anand said. "This year, we started a science Olympiad team where we are competing, so we are trying to get the best possible people."

While explaining the Tosenkyo game, junior Vivian Leung demonstrates what to do along with junior Aditi Sawant and senior Amanda Liu during an Asian Student Association meeting on Sept. 30. The meeting, held after school, was a general meeting where students played games for service hours and candy. "ASA's goal is to spread the various cultures of Asia through fun activities," Sawant said.

Coffee with a Tune. Freshmen Charlotte Schroder, Brooklyn Bhim and Jolie Bickler sing loud and proud to entertain those who attended the fall coffee house on Friday, Sept. 27 hosted by the Drama Club Booster. Attendees paid $5 to enter the event. "Coffee House is a fun opportunity for students all over the school to come together for an open mic night where anyone can perform," Drama Club Sponsor Melody Herzfeld. "We have been doing the Coffee House event here with Douglas Drama for the past 20 years."

"What I really like is that our group is small, so everyone gets a chance to speak, even when we have different opinions on the book," Sibila said.

Men's soccer coach Christian Chacon explains the necessary forms that potential players need to fill out during the interest meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Hurricane Helene caused the original meeting to be postponed, but many students attended the rescheduled meeting to get the information they needed. "[I hope] to take them to districts, regionals, then states," Chacon said.

Senior Bruno Camilo rolls a clothing rack around the courtyard during B lunch on Thursday, Sept. 19 for "Anything But A Backpack" Day. Camilo used the clothing rack to hang his school items, including headphones, a change of clothes and a notebook, for transport throughout the day. "['Anything But A Backpack' Day]'s fun; it's interesting," Camilo said. "I wish more people would have done it."

Sophomore Viviana Meany and freshman Maia Popelca chat in the courtyard on Thursday, Sept. 19 on "Anything But A Backpack" Day. Popelca carried her schoolwork on a stick, while Meany rode from class to class with her books in her basket.

Looking for something in his bag, sophomore Jayden Castro uses a duffel bag for "Throw It In" Thursday for homecoming spirit week on Thursday, Sept. 19. Students brought "Anything But A Backpack" to carry all their belongings for the day. "People have said this makes me look like a doctor," Castro said.

Sophomore Timothy Carroll participates in "Throw It In" Thursday on Thursday, Sept. 19, where students carry around their school items in anything except a backpack. Carroll came to school with a green suit case. "I brought the suitcase my grandparents fled Germany with during World War II," Carroll said.

All decked out in red, junior Gabriella Lima walks to class on Friday, Sept. 20 during homecoming spirit week. MSD held "4 of a Kind" Friday on the last day of spirit week, where students wore colors corresponding to their grade level.

Senior Kayla Walker competes for the final available spot in a competitive game of musical chairs on Friday, Sept. 20 during A lunch. Friday's spirit week theme encouraged students to dress in their class colors. "[My favorite part about spirit week] is being with my friends and just spending my last year with everyone," Walker said.

Sophomores Sophie Szkaradek, Jess Aizanman and Taryn Ba**er, all wearing blue to represent their class, chat while eating lunch during B lunch in the courtyard. On Friday, Sept. 20, sophomores wore blue for "4 of a Kind" Friday, in which students wore their class colors. "I'm really loving the school spirit," Szkaradek said.

During A lunch on '4 of a Kind' Friday, students displayed their school spirit by wearing green, blue, red or black, depending on their grade level.

During A lunch, freshmen Lola Simcox, Emily Ahearn and Sharon Ruiz played musical chairs in the courtyard on Friday, Sept. 20. "Four of a Kind" Friday was the final day of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's spirit week, with the theme being to dress up in class colors. "I love having fun with the themes. It always puts a smile on others' faces when they see the funny outfits or backpacks," Simcox said.

While teaching a lesson for the Game Design Class, junior Marc Lam instructs junior Taylor Rowe on what to type into the computer during a Coding Club meeting on Sept. 27. Coding Club offers a variety of classes from different coding languages to 3D Printing and Minecraft for all MSD students. "We taught how people can move characters on a 2D screen with physics," Lam said. "We're getting the basics down and then we're going to move onto our project which is basically Flappy Bird with a twist."

"I helped a freshman in Algebra II Honors with quadratic equations, factoring and solving," Ibrahim said.

Juniors Aaron Porudominsky and Zaid Popen sell cake, donuts, t-shirts and water during the lacrosse parent interest meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 18. MSD men's lacrosse team attempted to creatively raise money for the team to fund equipment and events. "My goal is to get better and go to states," Porudominsky said.

Rise Up Club Co-Presidents Isabella John and Samara Murad review dues for the upcoming school year at the first Rise Up Club general interest meeting this year on Thursday, Sept. 19. John and Murad announced events that will be held throughout the year and expectations for students that join the club. "I feel really great, and [I'm] really glad about all the turnout that we had," John said. "Everyone seemed really excited to join, and I really feel happy about that."

Glad to see each other after summer break, sophomore Lara Kaplan and Brazilian Student Association president Amanda Pugatch discuss club officer applications at BRASA's first general meeting. The Brazilian Student Association held their first general meeting in room 1536 after school on Sept. 9, where members shared their names and favorite part of Brazilian culture. "I hope that BRASA can give people more opportunities to see how beautiful beautiful the Brazilian culture is," Pugatch said.

Holding the poster, Indian Student Association presidents and sophomores Samera Kathuria and Aarush Sutaria present the senior ISA officers a gift to thank them for being in the club. Each officer listed on the poster painted their hand and left their handprint on their name as a send-off. "The seniors leaving is heartbreaking because they are so loved but it's also really exciting because it allows for them to step into their future and make us proud," Kathuria said.

To celebrate, administration offered free breakfast and lunch to teachers throughout the week, including bagels in the principal's conference room. "I really enjoy teacher appreciation week because I love free food," Taylor said.

JROTC Seniors Gabriel Zapata-Rojas, Ivan Pacheco,and Jesus Padavy win a total of $340,000 total in scholarship money from the Navy at Senior Awards. Senior Awards took place on Thursday, May 2, where seniors were honored for their contributions to the MSD community.

Sophomore Joshua Johnson tags an Atlantic Sharpnose Shark for research at the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University. This field trip took place on Thursday, April 25 with 19 students, primarily those from marine biology teacher Bryce Robinson-Burgess’ class. Shark tagging is currently used by NSU researchers and collaborators to monitor the migratory patterns of ten distinct shark species, including the smooth hammerhead, which was recently added to the project.

Senior JROTC members Taylor Weese and Elizabeth Velasco prepare for a JROTC scholarship interview on Wednesday, April 24. In honor of Martin Duque, Alaina Petty and Peter Wang, cadets who lost their lives on February 14, 2018, the MSD JROTC Booster club awards three senior cadets a $1,000 scholarship.
