🌟BUDDY READ ANNOUNCEMENT🌟

Unabridged Podcast has chosen its next Buddy Read! In August, we hope you’ll join us in reading Dahlia Adler's Going Bicoastal. Please share with others who might be interested, and let us know if you’d like to join. You can respond here or DM us, and feel free to ask any questions.

Here’s the publisher’s synopsis:

"A q***r Sliding Doors YA rom-com in which a girl must choose between summer in NYC with her dad (and the girl she's always wanted) or LA with her estranged mom (and the guy she never saw coming). In Dahlia Adler’s Going Bicoastal, there’s more than one path to happily ever after. Natalya Fox has twenty-four hours to make the biggest choice of her stay home in NYC for the summer with her dad (and finally screw up the courage to talk to the girl she's been crushing on), or spend it with her basically estranged mom in LA (knowing this is the best chance she has to fix their relationship, if she even wants to.) (Does she want to?)

"How's a girl supposed to choose? She can't, and so both summers play out in alternating timelines - one in which Natalya explores the city, tries to repair things with her mom, works on figuring out her future, and goes for the girl she's always wanted. And one in which Natalya explores the city, tries to repair things with her mom, works on figuring out her future, and goes for the guy she never saw coming."

Happy Weekend! Today, I (Jen) am reading Ryan La Sala's Reverie (this is a backlist book from the author of The Honeys, one of my favorites from last year). My family just returned from an epic Orlando vacation—we did six theme parks in six days, and I. Am. Tired. But it was amazing! Anyway, I'm looking forward to curling up with this book and relaxing just a bit.

What are you reading this weekend?

I (Jen) am thrilled to share my review of Katherine Applegate's Wishtree today on the blog—you can check it out over at https://buff.ly/4bNtPwA!

Wishtree is a story whose narrator and protagonist is Red, a red oak tree. Every May, the people in Red's neighborhood write their wishes on cloth and tie those wishes to Red's branches. It's a beautiful story of love and acceptance and friendship.

What's at the top of your summer TBR?

Ah, the final installment in this fantastic series! I (Ashley) am loving Jesse Q. Sutanto's The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties, which is set in Indonesia and centers the aunties in a fun way that's different from the first two books.

This series holds a special place in my heart as these aunties (and protagonist Meddy and her beloved Nathan) and their hilarious shenanigans helped me through some hard times during my many appointments and surgery back in 2022. I love Sutanto's books so much and look forward to reading more of her work.

What is a series that has made you laugh out loud? Let us know!

After putting together one of these graphics for my own account, I (Jen) thought it would be fun to develop one for Unabridged! I focused on books that we've discussed as either buddy read or book club picks. Here are the books I highlighted (of course, I left out some amazing reads that just didn't fit the prompt):

U - The Last Black *Unicorn* (Tiffany Haddish) - I had to be creative with this one since we didn't have any books that legitimately started with "u."

N - Not Here to Be Liked (Michelle Quach)

A - All American Boys (Jason Reynolds and Brendon Kiely)

B - Blackout (Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, Nicola Yoon)

R - Rez Ball (Byron Graves)

I - In the Key of Nira Ghani (Natasha Deen)

D - Dear Martin (Nic Stone)

G - Gabi, a Girl in Pieces (Isabel Quintero)

E - Elatsoe (Darcie Little Badger)

D - Darius the Great Is Not Okay (Adib Khorram)

P - Poet X (The) (Elizabeth Acevedo)

O - One of Us Is Lying (Karen McManus)

D - Dry (Neal Shusterman)

➡️ Have you read any of these titles? What other favorites might you have included for each letter?

🌟BUDDY READ ANNOUNCEMENT🌟

Unabridged Podcast has chosen its next Buddy Read! In July, we hope you’ll join us in reading Guadalupe García McCall's Summer of the Mariposas. Please share with others who might be interested, and let us know if you’d like to join. You can respond here or DM us, and feel free to ask any questions.

Here’s the publisher’s synopsis:

"When Odilia and her four sisters find a dead body in the swimming hole, they embark on a hero's journey to return the dead man to his family in Mexico. But returning home to Texas turns into an odyssey that would rival Homer's original tale.

"With the supernatural aid of ghostly La Llorona via a magical earring, Odilia and her little sisters travel a road of tribulation to their long-lost grandmother's house. Along the way, they must outsmart a witch and her Evil Trinity: a wily warlock, a coven of vicious half-human barn owls, and a bloodthirsty livestock-hunting chupacabras. Can these fantastic trials prepare Odilia and her sisters for what happens when they face their final test, returning home to the real world, where goddesses and ghosts can no longer help them?

"Summer of the Mariposas is not just a magical Mexican American retelling of The Odyssey, it is a celebration of sisterhood and maternal love."

Happy Weekend! Today, I (Jen) am reading Emil Ferris's My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Book Two. Book One came out in 2017, but I jumped back into this one with no hesitation—it's such a rich, complex graphic novel (I'll include the synopsis below!).

What are you reading this weekend?

*******

Synopsis:

"Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Book Two is the eagerly awaited conclusion to one of the most acclaimed graphic novels of the past decade. Presented as the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes as she tries to solve the murder of her beloved and enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold.

"In Book Two, dark mysteries past and present continue to abound in the tumultuous and violent Chicago summer of 1968. Young Karen attends a protest in Grant Park and finds herself swept up in a police stomping. Privately, she continues to investigate Anka’s recent death and discovers one last cassette tape that sheds light upon Anka's heroic activities in N**i Germany. She wrestles with her own sexual identity, the death of her mother, and the secrets she suspects her brother Deez of hiding. Ferris’s exhilarating cast of characters experience revelations and epiphanies that both resolve and deepen the mysteries visited upon them earlier. Visually, the story is told in Ferris's inimitable style that breathtakingly and seamlessly combines panel-to-panel storytelling and cartoon montages filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster mag iconography."

I (Ashley) am loving this cozy mystery that I'm listening to thanks to .fm! Olivia Matthews' Against the Currant focuses on Lyndsay, a chef and baker who is just fulfilling her lifelong dream of opening a family bakery that celebrates her family's Grenadian heritage. But a conflict with another local baker quickly shifts Lyndsay's focus, and suddenly she finds herself at the center of an investigation.

Lyndsay's family provides tireless support for both the bakery and for her as she struggles with the investigation, but they have different opinions about how involved to be in solving the mystery. I'm loving the pacing, the atmosphere, and the narration of this one!

Have you read any good cozy mysteries lately? Let us know!

Happy Weekend! Today, I'm reading Carley Fortune's This Summer Will Be Different, which I'm finding to be the perfect book for my first day of summer break. Fortune's books have all been winners for me, and this one promises to be my favorite yet.

Friends, I (Ashley) am afraid I may need to pick my heart up off the floor after this one. 😬

BUT! I! CAN'T! STOP! READING! (That is how sweet Lily, the dachshund at the center of the story, talks.) I absolutely love Steven Rowley's books, but somehow I never read Lily and the Octopus, so here we are. However, if I'd realized before reading that it was focused on an elderly dog who is ill, I would've thought twice. But here I am, and I'm totally captivated.

What is a kind of book that makes you super sad? For some reason, books with animals hit me right in the heart. (This one is VERY different from Peter Heller's The Dog Stars, but it gives me the same vibes. That one is a favorite of mine, but also I could cry right now just thinking about it.)

It's already the start of summer here (and phew, we sure are feeling all the feelings at my house!), and I need to fit some summer books into my schedule! I have a feeling I'm going to need a pick-me-up after this one. What do you recommend?

🌟BOOK CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT🌟

Unabridged Podcast has chosen its next Book Club book! In June, we hope you’ll join us in reading Jesse Q. Sutanto's Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers. We'll decide on a chat date together, but go ahead and put the episode release date on your calendar for June 26!

Please share with others who might be interested, and let us know if you’d like to join. You can respond here or DM us.

Here’s the publisher’s synopsis:

"Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to.

"Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand, a flash drive. Vera doesn’t know what comes over her, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police possibly could, because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands. Vera knows the killer will be back for the flash drive; all she has to do is watch the increasing number of customers at her shop and figure out which one among them is the killer.

"What Vera does not expect is to form friendships with her customers and start to care for each and every one of them. As a protective mother hen, will she end up having to give one of her newfound chicks to the police?"

Are you looking for a book written from an unusual perspective for the 2024 Unabridged Reading Challenge? Henry Hoke's Open Throat, a novel in verse written from the perspective of a mountain lion living in LA, certainly meets the requirements for that category.

This is a fast, compelling read that addresses many social issues from a unique perspective. Listen in to hear Ashley and Jen discuss Hoke's work as well as our pairings.

We're discussing this in a book club chat on May 27 if you'd like to join in!

🌟BUDDY READ ANNOUNCEMENT🌟

Unabridged Podcast has chosen its next buddy read! In June, we hope you’ll join us in reading Jennifer Lynn Barnes's The Naturals. We'll chat on June 24! Please share with others who might be interested, and let us know if you’d like to join. You can respond here or DM us.

Here’s the publisher’s synopsis:

"Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.

"What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides—especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own. Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.

"Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive."
