Case of the Boogeyman เป็นมินิแอนิเมชันตีแผ่ความไม่โปร่งใส่ของกระบวนการยุติธรรมในไทย โดยอ้างอิงถึงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นจริง 2 เคส คือคดีฆาตกรรมเด็กสาวลูกครึ่งที่มีสัมพันธ์ลึกซึ้งกับชายวัยกลางคน และอีกคดีที่เป็นหนึ่งตำนานอย่างข่าวเด็กทารกมากกว่า 2,002 ศพในวัดไผ่เงิน เสียงผู้หญิงปริศนาที่อธิบายเหตุการณ์ไปพร้อมกับภาพ Stop Motion พาผู้ชมเดินทางตามหาตัวร้ายในคราบ “Boogeyman” อย่างเป็นลำดับขั้นตอน
ทั้งสองคดีเกี่ยวเนื่องโดยตรงกับช่องว่างระหว่างชนชั้นในสังคม ภาพยนตร์เรื่องแรกมีการเกริ่นถึงการฆาตกรรมที่มีเหยื่อเป็นเด็กวัยรุ่น ซึ่งดูเหมือนจะไม่มีพิษสงใด ๆ คำถามที่ว่า ทำไมเธอถึงต้องถูกกระทำอย่างโหดเหี้ยมอยู่ในใจของผู้คนตั้งแต่แรกเริ่ม คดีค่อย ๆ ถูกเปิดเผยด้วยภาพกราฟฟิคจำลองเหตุการณ์ นำพาผู้ชมให้ไปเสาะหาเงื่อนงำที่ไม่ชอบมาพากล จนพบว่าคนร้ายถูกว่าจ้างโดยผู้ที่มีฐานะสูงกว่า เรื่องกลับพลิกผันเข้าไปอีกเมื่อพบว่าช่องโหว่ของกระบวนการสอบสวนของไทย ทำให้ “แพะรับบาป” ได้รับโทษอย่างไม่เป็นธรรม สุดท้ายแล้วแม้ว่าตำรวจจะคลี่คลายคดีสำเร็จ แต่ความสูญเสียที่เกิดจากระบบกฎหมายซึ่งเอื้อประโยชน์ให้แก่ผู้มีอำนาจ ก็ทำให้ผู้บริสุทธิ์มากมายต้องประสบเคราะห์ที่เขาไม่ได้สร้างขึ้น

The Prologue is an introduction to the theme of our project. It is a poem and a warning of the line between reality and fantasy where monsters embody an unrealistic form that we fear from a young age.
The Boogeyman thesis project follows two True Crime cases in Thailand, both designated to a video each. Both cases lay out the facts investigated during the time it happened, and it urges the audience to think about what or who would be considered as The Boogeyman.
Careful, though, the facts lie in the illusion of perceived truths.

Every 👏 single 👏 frame 👏 is what made up our documentaries. It wouldn’t be entirely false to say we’re manually shooting/drawing at least 3,000 photos to tell a five-minute-long story.

One scene could take up to two days to shoot, and if you mess up one shot….prepare to be there for another day.

There's a crime scene to investigate...
The Boogeyman premieres 10th to 11th July 2021
The storybook monsters come to life in this prologue. It is a warning, a cautionary rhyme that henceforth, everything is as realistic as it can be. We are now far from the safety of fiction.
The prologue's poetic structure is something that we’d see in a children’s book. The intention is to ease the transition from fiction to reality. The monsters that we concoct and fear are human, after all.
We will be taking you on a journey of our process in the making of the prologue video. Stay tuned!

Making props is the most fun and rewarding part of this project. Start by sketching out your overall idea and pick out a solid color scheme. Then we can move on to crafting and cutting! We tried using various patterns and textures to create interesting dynamics. However, the easiest trick is to keep your footage unified, and aesthetic is to keep your colors minimum and go from there.
Guess where we're taking Timmy...
The first step of stop motion is figuring out how to make our little friend. We call him "Timmy" for no specific reason 🤷♀️ .
Forget everything you know about puppet making because Timmy here needs something a little more special– Aluminum wire and epoxy putty! The combination of the two materials can create something magical. Timmy is fully articulated and can do any pose you want him to. Aluminum wire is a handy material because it is adjustable and, at the same time, sturdy. Then, you bake that round-shaped clay, stick it, and bam! You got his head. Keep him warm within little sweater, and we have to say—he is our best lead actor on set.

Behind the scenes of a film set doesn’t usually look like this… but ours does! This is our first attempt at stop motion. Everything was super new and exciting. Relearning everything from shooting, editing, and animating, to prop-making can be intimidating, but we managed.

The Boogeyman in stories is a representation of terror and fear cultivated in children as a form of an ugly mythical creature who takes them away if they disobey their parents.
As adults, when we think about criminals or a person we fear, subconsciously, our minds are directed to people who ‘fit’ the look of the monster we imagine in our heads, and we overlook people who don’t appear the same. That can be dangerous.
The Boogeyman in our rendition is reality-rooted: The storybook monsters are human beings. But it doesn’t limit itself to that. It becomes a concept that depicts negative traits and emotions, pre-set societal thinking, and harmful notions that prompt detrimental and damaging actions and thoughts.
“บูกี้แมน” นั้นเปรียบเสมือนตัวแทนของความสยองและความกลัวในเด็ก ที่มาในรูปแบบของสัตว์ประหลาดหน้าตาน่าเกลียดน่ากลัวที่จะจับตัวเด็กๆที่ไม่เชื่อฟังพ่อแม่ไป
สำหรับผู้ใหญ่อย่างเราๆ หลายครั้ง เมื่อพูดถึงผู้ร้าย คนไม่ดี หรือบุคคลที่เรากลัว ในหัวของเราอาจนึกภาพไปถึงใบหน้าที่สอดคล้องกับความชั่วร้ายราวปีศาจ และมองข้ามผู้อื่นที่ดูเผินๆแล้วอาจไม่เข้าข่าย
แต่นั่นแหล่ะ คือสิ่งที่น่ากลัว
ดังนั้น แง่มุมที่พวกเราได้หยิบยกมาพูดถึงใน “เดอะ บูกี้แมน”นั้น ล้วนนำเสนอความจริงอันน่าสะพรึงกลัว ประหนึ่งคำกล่าวที่ว่า “มนุษย์เรานี่แหล่ะ คือปีศาจที่น่ากลัวที่สุด” และนอกเหนือจากตัวบุคคลแล้ว สิ่งต่างๆที่พวกเขาได้กระทำ ความคิดที่ถูกผลักดันโดยสังคม ค่านิยมผิดๆ และผลกระทบต่างๆที่ตามมานั้น ล้วนเผยให้เห็นถึงความจริงที่น่าผวาไม่แพ้กัน

It is ... El Coco.
El Coco (also, El cucuy, A Cuca) is another iteration of The Boogeyman, famous in Spanish-speaking countries. Commonly known as "The monster under the bed" among Mexican-Americans, El cucuy preys on children who do not go to sleep on time or disobey their parents. Similar attributes are noticed in the El Coco of Spain and in the Brazilian variant, A Cuca, where parents warn the children of the same through lullabies.
El cucuy is depicted as a "small humanoid with glowing red eyes" while A Cuca takes the form of a "female humanoid alligator" (sometimes as an old lady with a sack). Other times, A Cuca would make soup out of children for their disobedience.
El Coco is illustrated as a hairy monster. Interestingly, coco derives from Galician and Portuguese côco. It means "coconut" whose look inspired the hairy, brown 'face' of El Coco.
El Coco (เอลโค่) เป็นอีกรูปแบบของบูกี้แมนที่เป็นที่โด่งดังในประเทศแทบสเปน คนเม็กซิกัน-อเมริกันมักเรียกสัตว์ประหลาดที่ชอบออกล่าเด็กน้อยที่ไม่ยอมนอน หรือไม่เชื่อฟังพ่อแม่นี้ ว่า El cucuy (เอล คูเควย์) ทั้ง El Coco ของสเปน และ A Cuca ของบราซิลนั้นมีความคล้ายคลึงกันตรงที่คำเตือนเกี่ยวกับพวกมันมักถูกสอดแทรกอยู่ในเพลงกล่อมเด็ก

Stories of the ‘Sack Man’ or the ‘Bag Man’ popularly come from countries like Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Hungary, Chile, North India, Korea, and more. The Sack Man is an ugly and skinny man who collects misbehaving children in his sack before eating them. Similar in their purpose, they present differently depending on their origin: the Sack man is usually an old man; a kidnapper in some versions and a murderer in others; sometimes even “Sack Woman”.
Interestingly, The Sack Man is possibly inspired by a man in the 16th century who went around collecting orphan babies to drop them off at an orphanage but most of them did not survive the journey.

เรื่องราวของ ‘Sack Man’ หรือ ชายแบกกระสอบเป็นนิทานที่ถูกเล่าขานในลักษณะที่คล้ายคลึงกันในหลายประเทศเช่น เม็กซิโก สเปน บราซิล ฮังการี ชิลี อินเดียตอนเหนือ เกาหลี ฯลฯ แต่ที่มาคาดว่ามาจากอเมริกาใต้

Stories of The Boogeyman stem from around the globe as it has become a common tool for parents to discipline their misbehaving children. While people know The Boogeyman as a mythical monster that lives under the bed and eats naughty children, this is not the only version.
A well-known origin of The Boogeyman comes from an Island in Indonesia called Sulawesi. A group of pirates in the 19th century that was known as Bugis, or Burganese, terrorized sailors from the British East India Company and others. These Sailors when returned home, fearfully called them the "Bugi Men."

ภาพยนตร์ฮอลลีวู้ดได้ตีความบูกี้แมนไว้หลากหลายเวอร์ชั่น เช่น The Babadook (2014) ตัวประหลาดที่มีใบหน้าขาวโพลน ดวงตาถลน ใส่หมวกทรงสูง หรือ บากูล ใน Sinister (2012) ที่โปรดปรานวิญญาณเด็กน้อย

It is a poem and a warning of the line between reality and fantasy where monsters embody an unrealistic form that we fear from a young age. The Boogeyman thesis project follows two True Crime cases in Thailand, both designated to a video each.
