Description:
Online radio station community.
100% Botswana music, but we will consider adding music from the rest of Africa, especially SADC region! The station is brainchild of Sidney "DJ Sid Baitsile
DJ Sid aka Sidney Baitsile literally started deejaying at the age of five before starting primary school. His father bought him a turntable-amplifier-spea
ker combo to entertain himself, his sister and kids at his farm at Radisele where he was staying with his grand parents. His love for music and radio grew further when he went to St Joseph’s College for high school. He was the only junior student with a radio/tape combo. Soon he was drafted into the entertainment committee where he was responsible for the weekend entertainment for boarding students. The same happened at the University of Botswana, where he used to get in trouble for making playing his music too loud from a big boom box his mother had bought him after passing high school with full colours. Fast forward to Washington in 1986 where he went to study Physiotherapy. He developed a fascination of house music from weekend mixshows on WPGC and Maryland’s V103. It is while at Howard University that he met DJ Ski from his home country. Ski introduced him to a club called the Roxy, where college students went for house music every Sunday night. That first night lit the fire for DJ Sid to switch from being a cassette DJ to vinyls. 12” Records became his second home where he spent hours shopping for vinyls that line up his music room even today. He learnt how to mix from watching his mentors Dj Mandril and Sam “The Man” Burns at the record store and clubs where they played. A few house parties followed for DJ Sid before he completed his BA Sociology and returned to Botswana. Upon his return to Gaborone at the end of 1991, he quickly established himself a leading club DJ alongside DJ Ski and Dj Cosmo. In 1992, he became the founder member of RB2, the first commercial radio in Botswana. He hosted the station’s breakfast show for seven years where he became the first radio DJ to play house music on primetime radio. The popularity of the music soared and soon other stations in the Southern African region started doing the same. One of DJ Sid’s finest moments was when he blew the crowd away in a 20 minute mega mix of house music at the Woza ’95 Festival at Lotlamoreng, where he shared the stage with Oskido, Christos, Da Vinci, Fresh and Aldrin Mogotsi. During his stay at RB2 as Programme Manager, he was instrumental in kick-starting radio careers in Botswana for Solo B, Fresh, Sammy T, Ndiye Letholathebe, Osego Garebamono, Kenneth “Cutrite” Moeng, Shakes The Mix, Lady Of Soul, Obza, Gloria Kgosi and Owen Rampha
In 1999, he left RB2 to join Gabz Fm as a founder member/shareholder and first programme manager for the radio station. Around the same time he released the first double hip hop CD in the country, “DJ Sid Presents P-Side” that gave birth to the hip hop industry in the country. The likes of Mr Doe, Scar, Ice Qeen, producers Man-E & Earth and Mr T all sharpened their skills at the P-Side on this album. In 2002, he left Gabz Fm to venture into print media, where his column, DJ Sid Big Weekend, quickly became the talk of the country. Currently, the column is rated as the second most popular page on The Voice, the country’s most read weekend newspaper. The success of this column presented other opportunities for DJ Sid to also establish another column on the Mirror and write entertainment stories for Mmegi. DJ Sid has also worked for a television production company, Aimcorp Productions(2005- 2006) as production manager. He helped the company to successfully tender for two Btv shows. He also worked for Small House Records, a leading record company in Botswana as label manager responsible for the company’s artists and distribution network. In 2008, DJ Sid released a 100% Botswana House music album in conjunction with DJ Fresh’s label, Big Dawg Productions. He was also brought back to Gabz fm as music and Programme consultant for 8 months to re-direct the station music. He is currently in the process of finishing up his home recording studio that he will make available to local musicians. A Club/Radio Dj Academy is also in his plans for 2009. He just got a club residency at one of Gaborone's oldest club venue, The Shebeen where he plays a three hour Classics(house, hip hop, kwaito, soul SA Township music, reggae, pop, African Afropop, kwasa kwasa, Splash, you name it) set every Friday night! Dj sid also has ambitions of getting a stake in one of the local private radio stations if the opportunity arises! Now below is What's in store for you from P-SideFm....
