It’s been a minute since we’ve posted and to be completely transparent we needed the time off to reset, reflect, and re-focus.

A lot has changed since, but yet one question kept coming back:

β€œWhat’s the story?”

Determined to answer that question, we began connecting and reaching out to more online creators of all industries who shared endless stories that covered everything: the good, bad, ugly, strange, and beautiful.

Not only has it been amazing to hear their experiences and perspectives, but it was an absolutely inspiring reminder that β€œthe journey is the destination.”

So to everyone who’s still on the journey with us, we at Dangsphere sincerely appreciate it and are excited to start sharing more stories with you.

And we’ll start with this behind-the-scenes shot of a recent podcast production we had the honor to collaborate with this past weekend.

β€œMusic brings a warm glow to my vision, thawing my mind and muscle from their endless wintering”

Damn, ok…

A little dramatic, but lets relate.

We’ll start with β€œMusic brings a warm glow to my vision”

Now, lets take into account that this was probably translated from Japanese into English, so I assume some things may be lost in translation here.

We think this means that music offers a new perspective.

Where certain things may have previously seemed bleak or lifeless, with music they come alive.

Music offers inspiration and a new look on your surroundings.

β€œThawing my mind and muscle from their endless wintering.”

We can assume he isn’t just cold all the time, so this probably means it brings his body and mind to life.

Music gives him a motivation, almost like a warm up before exercise.

It offers that push to get him moving.

Physically and mentally.

It floods his mind with curiosity and a desire to understand and interpret the world.

While this quote may be pretty mundane in Japanese.

(We don’t know because we don’t speak Japanese)

In English its a poetic work of art.

What is a Vocoder?

A vocoder is a speech coding hardware that was originally developed a century ago for telecommunication purposes.

By synthesizing human speech into a codec, Homer Dudley of Bell Labs enabled phone conversations to occur over longer distances by preserving precious bandwidth.

How a Vocoder Works

Vocoders need two sources of audio to work: a carrier, acting as the initial sound source, and a modulator, of which’s harmonic characteristics shape the sound of the carrier.

This is done through the use of a β€œfilter bank,” which analyzes the modulator signal, divides it into frequency bands, and applies a band-pass filter to each.

The filters are tuned automatically to the center frequency of each band in the modulator signal.

Finally, once the carrier signal is sent through the filters, the vocoder raises or lowers the level of each filter according to the harmonics of the modulator signal.

Carrier and modulator signals can be difficult to grasp on an abstract level.

If the above description didn’t make enough sense, think about how the sound of your voice works for a simplified analogy.

Your lungs push air, vibrating your vocal cords; this is a carrier signal of sorts.

Next, the rest of your vocal tract shapes the vibrating air as it leaves your body; you can think of this as a modulator.

A vocoder works like this, by affecting the carrier signal according to the characteristics of the modulator signal.

Creating content can be a grueling and tedious process for some, but there are a few great ways to optimize your content creation.

1. Create Shareable Content

You can sing a cover, play an original, do a parody video, show your music making progress, show your studio, film a tutorial, explain the story behind a song, etc.

If someone finds your video fun, inspirational, or entertaining, they’re more likely to share it with a others and help you grow your audience

6. Create Content that Leads Engagement

TikTok thrives on interactions.

That’s why the platform gives users plenty of tools to collaborate.

Take advantage of this and create videos that encourage people to get engage.

You can start a challenge, ask people to film a duet with you, create a response to your video, or stitch their own video as a follow-up to yours.

Every time someone creates content in relation to yours, you’ll be exposed to their audience and hopefully grow your own following.

7. Use Your Own Tracks as a Sound

Early on, this may not bring much traffic to you.

Spend a few months building up your following using the other tips, and when you have created a loyal audience, you can start introducing them to your released music.

When using your own song as a sound, you want to showcase the best 10 seconds to a minute of your song.

Avoid lengthy intros, instrumental breaks, or outros.

You want the cut you choose to grab your audience’s attention and keep them watching the video til the end.

Be sure to also think about how your song relates to what’s in the video.

Diving into and experimenting with plugins lately πŸ”Œ:

We decided to venture into sounds we don’t commonly use but often hear πŸ‘‚πŸ½ on tv and movies-

Specifically the Ukulele-

πŸ”Š If you’re looking for a ukulele sound and don’t have a live ukulele player, we highly recommend the free VST called Sine Factory’s Formby.

β€œFormby is a modern ukulele that neatly captures the whimsical nature of the instrument. πŸŽΌβ€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

It provides plenty of detail and playability, with up and downstrokes, major and minor chords, and a choice of keyboard layout options.

πŸ’‘ Whether you need cheerful strummed song accompaniments, a staccato emphasis on the off-beat, plucked chords and arpeggios, or delicate melody lines, Formby has you covered.”

On those tough days - what’s your go to for therapy?

➑️ Pour that extra cup of coffee β˜•οΈ

➑️ Take plenty of breaks ⏰

Continuing our discussion on TikTok strategies, we’ve decided to dive even deeper in a few strategies that marketers are buzzing about these days:

1️⃣ Utilizing Hastags βœπŸ½β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

But are Hastags as important on TikTok as they are on Instagram?

β€œUnlike other social media platforms, hashtags on TikTok aren’t really used to search for content, but rather they’re used by the algorithm to help categorize your videos and show them to the right people.”

πŸ’¬ Sticking with 3-4 Hastags on TikTok will help the algorithm understand where your content goes-

2️⃣ Less is more 🎞

When it comes to the length of your content, less is more on TikTok as the platform values when content is watched from beginning from end.

β€œPrioritize sharing valuable content first, but keep this tip in mind and ask yourself before you post a 60-second video: β€œIs this entertaining enough to keep people’s attention until the end?”

3️⃣ Consistency is king πŸ‘‘β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

Posting regularly is key with content marketing, but when it comes to video content posting everyday can feel intimidating and challenging.

β€œIf that sounds intimidating, just remember that your videos don’t have to be really high quality.”

πŸ’¬ Additionally, if you batch record your videos you can designate and separate the days out so you’re not on the hook to record, edit, and post all at once.

We’re fans of β€œcreator burn out” here at Dangsphere so we highly suggest that first and foremost you:

β€œFind a consistent strategy that works for your music and brand vs trying to do it all at once.”

Catch our next week’s post where we’ll share what content is trending and popular strategies.

Till then, we’re curious to hear which strategy speaks to you the most?

If you’ve been following us for awhile and reading this, perhaps it’s safe to say that you’re a fellow content creator and/or got a plan for your content?

With short form video trends like IG Reels and TikTok, it’s no surprise that more and more musicians, artists, and creators are focusing on curating content that fits their vibes and brand.

But what and where should the focus be and how does one stand out in this sea of competition?

Especially places like TikTok? πŸ€”β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

Here are a few strategies we’ve uncovered from fellow marketers on content marketing in 2022:

1. Create content with a community in mind

🎢 If you’re a musician: create content around your music genre and topics that fans of your genre resonate with.

πŸ–Ό If you’re an artist: create content around your art and topics that your audience ask you most about.

If you’re both, feel free to combine the two worlds but connect them with a common theme so they don’t come across as random topics πŸŒ‰β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

2. Remember that content marketing is a marathon and not a race πŸ‘Ÿβ°πŸ•°β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

These days, short form video content gives people a glimpse into your personality and vibes-

πŸ“Ί And like any great TV or Movie Series, trust and organic following is earned over time.

So don’t get down if you’re not seeing quick growth, instead stay on the steady and consistent path ⛡️

3. Niching or as we call it: β€œgetting specific” πŸ”Žβ€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

As musicians, artists, and creators, a lot of us might have multiple passions which is great but according to marketers, not so fantastic for the TikTok algorithm.

πŸ‘‰πŸ½ Instead, lean into yourπŸ” 3-5

Let us know in the comments what content you love creating on platforms like Instagram and TikTok?

How to add TikTok to your musicYou don’t need to make a ton of content to promote your music....
10/06/2022

How to add TikTok to your music

You don’t need to make a ton of content to promote your music.

You could ask other creators to use your music.

If creating daily content on TikTok doesn’t isn’t something you can commit to on a consistent basis, then you should consider leveraging other TikTok creators.

The core idea is the same – choose content creators who have a large and engaged audience and ask them to use your music in their videos.

TikTok doesn’t allow you to message people who aren’t following you, so you’ll likely have to find other ways to contact them (email, Instagram DMs, etc).

When contacted them always be respectful, don’t spam creators, and most importantly, don’t get discouraged when you don’t hear back.

They probably get this a lot.

And, you’ll be hearing β€œno” a lot more often than you’ll be hearing β€œyes.”

Many creators with large audiences will most likely be expecting to receive payment for the promotion they’re doing for you.

Whether or not it’s worth the money depends on the creator, their engagement rate, and the price they’re asking for, so evaluate it on a case-by-case basis.

To make the collaboration as appealing to the creators as possible, make it easy for them.

You can offer to choose the snippet of your song that should be used, come up with a great idea for a challenge, a dance, a meme, etc.

If they see value in your ideas and an opportunity to start a trend, they’ll be happy to work with you.

Once you get a few big creators on board, other people will probably want to jump in with them.

If you’re not seeing much traction, you can take this strategy one step further and start messaging other creators to encourage them to take part in the challenge.

β€œMusic has the power to heal, transform, and inspire and we have the power through deep listening to increase our intuition and self awareness.”

We have always felt that music, while being deeply rooted in mathematics and writing, is primarily intuitive.

When we play music we feel that it sounds good, we don’t really know that it sounds good, just like any other art.

The rush of feelings that music brings us is absolutely healing and inspiring.

There’s no doubt about that.

It can change our mood, motivate us, and remind us of things.

We find it interesting that music and all art requires inspiration to make while simultaneously inspiring others.

Fortunately, this is not a closed loop.

We can find inspiration from nature, loved ones, everyday life, etc.

But, those who are musicians know that most often inspiration for music comes from other music.

Although, to understand those who had no choice but to take inspiration from nature would be truly transcendent.

Hang drums and steel drums in general are melodic percussion instruments.

You can often here them in chill background music, or in videos and movies in jungle scenes, scenes with easter religion involved, etc.

However, you can buy a fairly cheap steel drum on the internet or from your local music store.

Or you could go for the hang drums that are anywhere from $700 to $2000.

These drums are great for drummers looking for a portable musical instrument and or for those looking to learn a simple melodic instrument.

There are two ways to get your music on TikTok:

1. Use a Distributor

Many major distributors work with TikTok.

If you have officially released a track, it’ll probably be available on TikTok.

If you’re unsure, you can always check with your distributor.

This is usually the best way to get your music on TikTok.

TikTok will have the rights to include your song in their library, and you’ll get royalties every time your song is used in a video (whether by you or by anyone else).

2. Upload a video

If you haven’t officially released the song yet (maybe you want to tease it), you can simply upload a video that has your song in the background.

You can change the sound’s title to reflect your artist name and the song title by clicking on your profile picture in the bottom right corner.

Note that you can only change a sound’s title once.

Once again, this option is fine if your song hasn’t been released yet.

If you use it with a song that’s been officially released, there’s a chance that TikTok will flag your video for copyright infringement.

Not to mention, other users won’t be able to search for your song in the TikTok sounds library, and you won’t be able to collect any royalties.

Building Confidence in Your Music.

1: Don’t compare yourself to other music too often.

This can take the fun out if writing and playing music.

If you can only think about how your not as good as your favorite musicians or your songs aren’t building as much popularity as others, it will kill your motivation.

As long as your improving your doing well.

2. Try not to chase trends.

You might find yourself trying to emulate others who’ve found success without realizing that the game has already changed.

Follow your own path and and be yourself.

3. Look for trusted opinions releasing your music.

You may think that you don’t need any criticism because its your art or you may be afraid of criticism.

Either way, suck it up and take it.

It’s probably the most important part of growing as an artist.

4. Collaboration.

If you never collaborate with others your missing out on really valuable experience.

Many musicians make their own music and don’t like working with others, but just like taking criticism, it can be some of the most important education you ever get.

5. Be a musician for the long haul.

You don’t need to make it big fast or really at all.

One of the only ways to stay motivated in this business is to love music for all it is and to embrace change.

When it comes to promoting your music, its always good to have a plan in mind.

Not all of us are great marketers and musicians at the same time, so knowing how to go about releasing your music is a great head start.

Here are four tips to use when promoting your music.

1. Prepare an EPK

An electronic press kit (EPK) should be your forst plan of action.

This includes a clear and engaging artists bio, including accolades or placements, showcases, press photos, and relevant links and contact information.

This helps you to appear more professional as a musician and you can use it as an attachment when reaching out for blog placements and bookings.

2. Plan a Mutli-Phase Release Strategy

There should be a pre-rollout, week-of, and post-release strategy that you regularly follow.

This means content before, during, and after your music release to get high and relevant traffic.

It can promote the music directly, or indirectly.

Any content will help to get it out there.

3. Use Consistent Branding

The first place most people will look is at your social media pages.

Make sure your brand is consistent among all your accounts.

This includes color schemes, writing, video, pictures, and music.

This is often what keeps people coming.

4. Ask β€œWhy?”

Ask yourself why your putting the music out.

Is it to build a brand?

Is it another step in a long string of steps to a certain goal?

Make sure your optimizing for the results you want to achieve.

This should show in your CTAs (calls to action) and your messaging.

Self Care for Musicians

Music is a notoriously difficult industry to work in, especially for the beginners.

Many musicians will say that the only way to succeed as a musician is to work day and night, hustle, and loose precious nights of sleep.

However, many personal issues can arise from chronic stress and lack of self care.

When it comes to self-care for musicians the process is not a whole lot different than self-care for anyone else, but it’s arguably more important to follow.

As creatives, we often mix our work like with our personal lives.

When your a musician for work, that doesn’t mean you quit music when your not being payed.

Your still a musician at the coffee shop, the bar, and at home.

This can bring on a feeling of burnout, and burnout is the death of creativity.

What Is Self Care?

Self care means taking care of your physical and mental well-being.

This basically means exercise (unless your a drummer), meditation, sleep, and eating right.

Honestly, its feels insane to write those words to a bunch of musicians, but in our experience, it’s important.

Also, some studies have shown that over 70% of independent musicians experienced some symptoms of mental illness in relation to their jobs in the past few years.

Why is Self-Care Important?

Self-care helps to build a positive image of yourself, especially through exercise and meditation, as well as reducing bad habits.

It makes you more productive, creative, and resilient; less stressed, depressed, and anxious; and it promotes a healthy work like balance.

INDIES

While majors are invested in the Independent space, there are many profitable and successful independent companies doing the same.

These players have figured out how to game search on platforms like Spotify and YouTube by creating cleverly named playlists and channels, and promoting them on social media.

Their content also features mostly instrumental music by producers and writers releasing under lots of pseudonyms.

The main difference is that they usually combine multiple artist pseudonyms and release hundreds of songs on each profile so they can generate bulk streams via the streaming services algorithms.

Strange Fruit for example use combinations of their β€œartists” Lofi Fruits Music and Chill Fruits Music with a third artist pseudonym, because this generates streaming activity not only via search but also algorithmic programming like Release Radar and Daily Mix on Spotify.

The songwriters and producers of these tracks are either paid a fixed fee per track or a combination of a low advance and reduced royalty rate and it works because these β€œlabels” can guarantee millions of streams through their own network of search engine optimized DSP playlists and YouTube channels.

MAJOR LABELS ARE RELEASING MUSIC BY β€œFAKE ARTISTS”

Sony and Universal Music created playlists for these types of use cases under their Digster and Filtr brands long before Spotify ever did.

In fact many major studios started releasing music by β€œfake artists” in the early 2010s and still do it.

For example, check out these artists that are all Sony-owned with completely generic artist names coming from the source β€œFiltr”:

Humlan Djojj
Baby Bears
Mysan
Vaggvisor

There are many other examples if you keep digging, and I should stress, not just by Sony but by all major groups (for example Warnerβ€˜s X5 group) and of course by thousands of (mostly low-quality) independent/DIY labels.

Interestingly, all of these β€œartists” are all discovered on Sony-controlled playlists with generic search-optimized titles, and millions of followers if you add all the small niche playlists together.

If you look into the credits of these songs it turns out they are written or produced by writers/producers with names different than the search engine-optimized pseudonyms they are releasing the music under.

Its likely pretty big business for a major label if they can generate significant usage of these releases just by putting them on their own playlist brands (which they have been able to promote freely on streaming platforms thanks to the free ad credits received as part of their agreements with streaming platforms).

Most of these songs are β€œwork for hire” where the label has paid a small one time fee for the recordings and then collects the full royalty, but there are also examples where the people behind the pseudonyms are paid a (low) royalty rate.
