I PLANNED A SURPRISE PARTY FOR MY HUSBAND, BUT WHEN HE WALKED IN, EVERYONE FELL SILENT
My husband's 40th birthday was coming up, and I decided to throw a surprise party for him. To prepare for it, I told him I would be out of town on his birthday, and we agreed to celebrate on another day. On the evening before the big day, I pretended to pack my bags and leave for the airport when I actually just stayed overnight at my friend's house.
My husband usually gets home at 6 p.m., so I invited everyone at 5 p.m. to set up. As we hid in the dark, waiting to surprise him, the key turned in the door. I held my breath. We heard the door open, and then... there was a woman's voice.

MY SON'S RESPONSE TO A CUSTOMER SCREAMING AT HIS FAVORITE CASHIER BROUGHT EVERYONE IN THE STORE TO TEARS.
James is a special kid who does not talk much and is afraid of strangers. Whenever I took him to the supermarket with me, he would often break down from overstimulation, and I almost gave up trying to take him out of the house until he met Mckella. She was the sweetest cashier lady, and they clicked instantly.
Since then, he would be the one who wanted to hand her the money, or he would try to help her pack our bags. We would always look for Mckella and wait for her, no matter how long the line was.
On that day, we were standing in the cash register line when an old guy started raising his voice. He was screaming at Mckella about his voucher expiration dates as she tried to explain that she could not accept his discount card. I held my son's hand closer, knowing how scared he could get in unusual situations.
I could not believe my eyes when he let go of my hand and rushed to 👇.

The day before my 86th birthday, I received a call from my daughter that turned my world upside down.
"Mom, listen," my daughter sighed. "Ethan and I got a call this morning. It was a woman claiming to be our birth mother. She said she's been searching for us for years and even sent adoption papers as proof. Ethan wants to meet her. But I need to know... why didn't you tell us?"
I was speechless. The girl who once wanted a closed adoption had reached out after all these years.
"I... I didn't think it mattered," I finally managed to say, my voice shaky as I felt my hands tremble. "I'm so sorry. I'll tell you whatever you need to know now. But what does this have to do with my 86th birthday?"
"Mom, she's coming into town tomorrow, and she doesn't live in Pasadena anymore. This might be our only chance. And to be honest, I'm upset you kept this from us. Ethan is, too. We need some time to process this, so we're meeting her and taking a few days to figure things out," Emily explained coldly.
The call ended abruptly, and it was clear she didn't want to talk anymore. I cried myself to sleep, and the next day — my birthday — came and went. My kids didn't show up. I didn't even get a phone call.
