Last call for entries!
We extended the deadline for the annual SIEA Better Newspaper Contest out to today, June 15, but this is the final deadline.

It is that time of year again, time to start preparing your entries for the SIEA Better Newspaper Contest!

Entries are to be submitted electronically at www.newspapercontest.com/SIEA. The deadline for entries will be May 31 at 5 p.m.

(Full contest registration information was put into the mail for SIEA members today - so watch your mailboxes! And remember you must be a SIEA member in good standing to be eligible to enter in the contest.)

We are planning to hold a fall social at Old Herald Brewing and Distillery in Collinsville on Friday, Sept. 9 at noon. At this social, we will recognize our General Excellence winners, welcome our new slate of officers (the proposed slate of officers was included with the information letter), as well as the recipients of our Master Editor and Friend of Journalism awards.

Speaking of the Master Editor and Friend of Journalism awards, we are seeking nominations for these two prestigious awards.
The Master Editor Award is the SIEA’s highest honor, granted to a select few editors and publishers that have served their communities for many years. The list of past honorees is very impressive.
The Friend of Journalism Award is our newest award. This award seeks to honor people outside of the newspaper industry who have made significant contributions to journalism in southern Illinois.
If you would like to nominate someone for either of these awards, please send a nomination letter to me. You can email it directly to [email protected]; or feel free to mail it to Mary Koester, North County News, P.O. Box 68, Red Bud, IL 62278.

Recently, we sent out the annual membership dues notices. If you are a current member, I personally would like to thank you for your continued support.
If you’re not currently a member, I would encourage you to consider membership. For more information about membership, including checking to see if yours is current, please contact SIEA Treasurer John Galer at [email protected] or by calling The Journal-News at 217-710-7319.
SIEA has done many great things in its 100+ year lifespan. This ranges from scholarships for young, upcoming journalists, to recognizing deserving individuals in the newspaper industry. We strive to feature excellent speakers at our conferences, providing relevant and interesting information to our membership.
We also hold our annual contest each year to recognize the hard work of our member papers. I would like to stress that the contest is free to enter for all members in good standing!

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I can be reached by phone at 618-282-3803 or email at [email protected].

Thanks so much and looking forward to another great year of journalism in southern Illinois!
