Cape Cod Commission Holds Station Ave. Corridor Improvement Info Meeting for Yarmouth Residents

(YARMOUTH) - The Cape Cod Commission last month hosted an information meeting for Yarmouth residents interested in the future of Station Avenue.

Last January, Commission staff began working with the Town of Yarmouth to analyze key areas of concern along the busy roadway.

Station Avenue is a heavily used corridor with access to Route 6 and the Cape Cod Rail Trail, home to several local businesses and Dennis-Yarmouth regional schools.

According to a statement from the Commission, an analysis of the top 50 crash sites in the region includes the intersection of Station Avenue and White’s Path, with 19 crashes reported between 2018 and 2020.

A key priority is improving accommodations for all road users, including motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Station Avenue is utilized by non-motorized users looking to access the Cape Cod Rail Trail, schools, and various retail destinations from the densely populated neighborhoods surrounding the road.

The Station Avenue Corridor Study aims to develop alternatives that will improve safety, provide accommodations for all roadway users, and reduce congestion.

This study is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation through the Federal Fiscal Year 2023 Unified Planning Work Program as approved by the Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The draft concepts ranged from signalization or roundabouts to access management and improvements to bicycle and pedestrian facilities throughout the corridor. The draft concepts seek to improve safety, reduce congestion, and improve multi-modal accommodations.

Commission staff is now reviewing and summarizing input received from the public and refining the conceptual alternatives. A draft and final report are due within the next few months.

Republican Candidate for Cape & Islands State Senate Criticizes Democrat Incumbent on Immigrant Issue

(BARNSTABLE) - The Republican candidate for Cape & Islands State Senate is criticizing Democratic incumbent Julian Cyr on the issue of immigrants placed in housing on Cape Cod.

Chris Lauzon, in a statement, accused Cyr of hiding "critical information" and not being transparent with the public.

The Republican candidate said Governor Maura Healey's administration has refused to release timely, comprehensive, and accessible information on exactly how many migrants are being housed across the state.

Lauzon also wants to know where they are being housed, how many services are being provided, the health status of migrants, financial, public safety, and other impacts on local communities.

Lauzon ran unsuccessfully against Cyr in the 202 election.

Barnstable, Yarmouth, and Dennis are all part of the Cape & Islands State Senate District.

“Massachusetts’ state government is often called the least transparent in the country, and state laws and policies bear that out,” Lauzon said in a press release.

He cited a recent effort by State Auditor Diana DiZoglio, who is fighting for an audit of the State Legislature, which has been opposed by leadership in the state Legislature.
