Do not tell me you have Indian blood, that you are one quarter. Don't tell me one of your grandparents was an Indian, or hand me a piece of paper from a corrupt government, with colonized laws and rules about who is, and who isn't an American Indian. Come to me with straight eyes, and say proudly that you are an Indian. No one else in America needs paperwork to prove what race they are, only the rightful owners of this land. Come to me and show me who you are. Your blood, relatives or a piece of paper does not make you an Indian. You must be willing to live with honesty, integrity, courage, respect, and always remain unselfish towards your neighbors. For these are the things, that make you an Indian....

They say I will burn in hell for not following the Bible, but yet it has been used as weapon to colonize and murder my people...
for me it’s spirituality over religion. I don’t hate people for going to church, but I do hate what the churches have done to us...
before colonization we had our own ways and ceremonies, I choose the path of my ancestors.

This photo marks the first in a series of photos I've made of Indigenous and First Nations people who lived a century ago in America. I hope you look forward to the next 19 days!
Lakȟóta or Dakhóta translates to mean "friend" or "ally" referring to the alliances between the bands. “Sioux” is a term that refers to the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Oceti Sakowin) meaning “Seven Council Fires”. They are the confederacy of Great Plains Tribes.
The name "Sioux" was adopted in English by the 1760s from French. In the early 1700s French fur trappers moved further inland toward the west where they came upon a new group of natives whom they did not know previously, so upon their return to the east they asked Chippewa natives who spoke Ojibwe if they knew what these new people were. The Ojibwe response was that they were the “Nadowessi”, meaning “little snakes”. Being French, they added the plural suffix -oux to their name which turned into “Nadouessioux”, later shortened to just “Sioux”. The Ojibwe were enemies of the Sioux at the time.
In recent times the term “Sioux” is falling out of favour and some of the tribes have formally or informally reclaimed their traditional names.
Today the seven nations that comprise the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ are as follows, native spelling first, transliteration in parenthesis, English translation in quotes:
Lakȟóta/Teton:
▸Thítȟuŋwaŋ (Teton) possibly "dwellers on the prairie"
Santee-Sisseton "knife camp" or Eastern Dakota/Dakhóta:
▸ Bdewákaŋthuŋwaŋ (Mdewakanton) "Spirit Lake Village" or "people of the mystic lake"
▸Waȟpékhute (Wahpekute) "Leaf Archers"
▸Sisíthuŋwaŋ (Sisseton) "swamp/lake/fish scale village"
▸Waȟpéthuŋwaŋ (Wahpeton) "Leaf Village"
Yankton/Yanktonai or Western Dakota:
▸ Iháŋkthuŋwaŋ (Yankton) "Village-at-the-end"
▸ Iháŋkthuŋwaŋna (Yanktonai) "Little village-at-the-end"

Crazy Horse, of the Oglala Lakota tribe, played an integral role in the Battle of Little Bighorn, also known as Custer’s Last Stand. His likeness is now carved into a Black Hills mountain at The Crazy Horse Memorial. The famous leader resisted having his photograph taken, often responding to picture requests with “would you imprison my shadow too?” The memorial sculptor created his likeness based on descriptions from those who knew him. The grand visage, cut into granite, intends to honor the Native American values that Crazy Horse fought for and defended.

THE AGE OF INNOCENCE:
She holds a mini cradleboard, complete with doll tucked in. As boys were taught skills to prevail in combat and hunting, girls were schooled in all the tasks performed by their mothers. Native children learned which plants healed, soothed, sustained , and those to be avoided. There is one leaf for example, that is tied to the forehead, and within a matter of minutes, the headache would subside. If needed, a fresh leaf would be used until there is no more pain.

This beautiful sculpture was built by the Irish people in their own country to honor the American Choctaw Indian tribe. They were grateful because in 1847 the Choctaw people sent money to Ireland when they learned that Irish people were starving due to the potato famine. The Choctaw themselves were living in hardship and poverty, having recently endured the Trail of Tears.
And that is a lesson in how to be a person in this world.
Kindred Spirits is a large stainless steel outdoor sculpture in Bailick Park in Midleton, County Cork, Ireland. The shape of the feathers is intended to represent a bowl of food.
