Do you notice how guests on Graham Norton always tell great stories? These witty anecdotes are delivered with charisma and perfect flow. It's great entertainment and Graham has a skill for making people look good when they guest on "the couch".
It's not as spontaneous as it seems though. These witty tales are crafted and honed well in advance, sometimes with the help of writers and coaches.
Makes sense really. They get their story working, then recycle them on their promotional circuit. So if you follow one star in particular, you're likely to hear the same story again and again on different shows.
What us business owners can learn from this:
Working on your key stories and content means you can show up online and capture the attention of your audience in a compelling way.
Repetition is totally fine. If you feel like you've told the same story, or used the same sentence multiple times, that's a good thing! Lean in to it!
Some people are natural storytellers, the rest of us work on honing the skill. We work on stories and concepts, and add them to our collection so that we have them to hand at key moments (in emails, on client calls, in online content, in interviews)
When I work on this cornerstone content with my clients, I pay attention to themes and vocabulary that show up repeatedly. You often don't notice this when working alone. Its really helpful to have this stuff worked out so that when you show up online:
- your message comes across and everything you say supports your brand.
- you get known for the problems you solve.
- folks start to feel they know you, because your "voice" is consistent.
If you'd like to get your content working like a Graham Norton guest, DM me "content" and I'll send you the details :)
I watched this great talk by Gary Vee about growing on social media in 2023 for $0.
If you haven't heard of Gary Vee before, he's THE PERSON to listen to when it comes to social media predictions.
In this talk he tells you exactly what to do for growth on social. He's a straight-talker who is genuinely interested in helping people succeed. It's available on YouTube.
Go check it out ☺️
Thanks Gary!!!
Do you need a Border Collie for your content?
I bet you're never stuck for ideas. In fact, I bet you have so MANY ideas for your online business that you get stuck, staring at a blinking cursor wondering which to start with.
Should you create a video? Write a blog? Format that sales page?
They all seem equally important.
Next thing you know you've fallen down a Google rabbit hole that somehow brings you back to instagram, scrolling, and trying to avoid spoilers about 'The Last of Us'. (are you watching it? I'm holding out for a binge)
If you believed all the productivity influencers, you SHOULD be able to herd all those ideas and tasks together like sheep. Get them to form an orderly queue and ultimately get them where they're supposed to go - supporting your business. But the reality is different! It's a big challenge to do this (and EVERYTHING else) on your own.
You need a business border collie!!
Get your ideas and tasks lined up in the most strategic and aligned way possible... moving together, working in harmony, and making you look good.
This is a service I've been offering to existing clients for a while now. (Wait, did I just call myself a dog? 🤔) I help them to show up consistently by helping them brainstorm, plan, create and distribute content that aligns with their strategic goals.

This is ideal of coaches, consultants and service providers who struggle to find time to show up for their audience regularly.
What's the best client-getting strategy for service-based businesses? A lot of us workin' solo started out because we love the work. You quickly realize though, looking for clients takes up a LOT of time. It can sometimes feel like an endless battle.
In my work, I help solo, service business folks (like coaches and creatives) to market their services with ease. It's a very scientific formula...
Brand + Visibility x Mindset = 🤩💰
The shiny ideas though. They're so shiny!
It's very tempting to follow the latest hacks and advice out there to get greater visibility. And it's soooo tempting to copy the popular styles to look "professional", but it's when you start showing up in a way that is of service to the people you're trying to reach that's when you start making a real impact and you start seeing the results.
When you start showing up in a way that aligns with your natural strengths and core values, and in a way that adds value, you're going to be a lot more memorable and impactful. And the people you're trying to reach will start to pay attention.
Thanks for watching ☺️

Optimise your website for better conversion
Having a steady flow of visitors to your website is brilliant but having website visitors convert to leads - is way better. These 3 simple tips can make all the difference.
Pop over to an incognito tab and test your site today. Comment below if you found a weak link!
When to use your own name as a brand and when not to!
I chose to use Claire Creative as my business name and domain (way back in 2008) because people from outside of Ireland and the UK always missed that second G in Gallagher. AND there are SO MANY Claire Gallaghers!!!
When you're a solo service business owner and getting set up online the obvious choice is to simply use your name.
But
- if it's not easy to spell or easy to remember
- or someone else with the same name is already established online
- or you're concerned about personal privacy
- or you plan to sell the business one day
Consider a separate brand name.
Naming is a crucial part of your strategy. Have you gotten a bit stuck on this big decision?
Who's had this experience? You sign up for a freebie and the follow up (for a service offering you were actually quite interested in) is like trying to drink from a firehose!!! TOO MUCH, TOO FORCEFUL!!!
Emails, DMs, phone calls!!!
I don't believe that a sales process has to be pushy. In fact, I am actively put off by a follow-up style that makes me feel pressured.
When I'm at the point of leaving a funnel and the red flags start to show up... scarcity and manipulation to get me to commit! I'm OUT!
Sadly, many of us feel like we have to use these tactics to get clients online. Playing with people's emotions is never OK. There are other ways, more empathetic, authentic ways to show up and get clients for your services.
How do you feel about following up with leads?
Audio clip from Disney's "Sleeping Beauty"
Me: Goodbye
Salesperson: But when will I see you again?
Me: Oh, never. Never!
Salesperson: Never?
Me: Well, maybe someday.
Salesperson: When? Tomorrow?
Me: Oh no!
Do you get the fear when it comes to investing in your business?
Do you worry about making a bad investment?

- The long, and VERY long-term return on investments.
- Knowing when to accept an investment from a client.
- The temptation to invest in the *appearance* of success.
- Using your Profit First savings to budget for your investments.
- Optimising your investments with strategy.

Eadaoin and I are dedicating this season to the subject of money, financial literacy and money mindset.
In this first episode, Eadaoin and I share our money stories. What story are you telling yourself about money? What's holding you back from stepping into greater financial literacy, independence or flow?

Do you have money blocks or questions about money management as a solo business? Get in touch! We'd love to keep the conversation going!
I love my work. I really love my work. But when it comes to the selling part on calls and in promos i get really uncomfortable. Do you feel good about selling?
I spent a fair chunk of time learning how to approach it better and I find that making it about the work really helps.
"I'll get to do this interesting project if i step outside of my comfort zone for 5 minutes and do the sales thing."
You have to get paid so if you work solo you have learn how to sell! Still a work in progress though.
Digital overwhelm gets to the best of us!
When you're a solo service-based business you need to know how to effectively market yourself online, but with so many possibilities and resources, it can feel overwhelming! And we end up with a mish-mash of marketing efforts and inconsistent lead flow.
I have a step by step process on how to get clarity and take a strategic approach to get clients online in 2022 without the overwhelm.
Join me live for a free workshop this Friday 4th of February and I'll show you how to create a digital strategy that gets you clients in 2022.
If you have a solo business owner in your network who would benefit from this, please consider sharing this post. Merci :)

More feast less famine!
More Feast Less Famine - The key to getting a consistent, scalable income as a coach or creative service provider.
I periodically interview people in my audience. Doing this means that I learn what content would be most valuable to them. EVERY TIME I do this I hear *inconsistent income* and *feast and famine* as the most stressful part of being self-employed.
I put these 5 tips together based on lessons I've learned the hard way! There's no one magic formula, it's mostly about staying on top of things with a plan that suits your temperament, your energy and your ideal clients.
What tip would you share?
A day in the life video that literally nobody asked for! I love being able to offer tips and strategies for marketing your services online, but I don't always walk the talk when it comes to showing up as the person behind the service. So here's a little Monday in November that tells you a few things about me.
I've started to prioritise doing things that make me feel fulfilled and happy. A bit of sport, a bit of guitar practice, cooking good meals, enjoying little moments (and big moments) with my lovely children... keeping myself in good mental shape allows me to show up fully when working one on one with clients. (Not shown... scrubbing dried cereal off the breakfast bowls, lugging the bins out, breaking up sibling fights!)
You'll also see me editing the Grow Out Loud podcast episode that's out today. Éadaoin and I are so proud of what we're building with the pod. In this season finale, we're looking back at some of the challenges and some of the wonderful things that happened in the past 12 months. We believe in sharing these stories as openly as possible, growing out loud with the intention of supporting others on a similar path.

Huge thanks to Jo for taking the time chat.
