Meet Soledad Gozalez, a recent graduate of New College, a fierce advocate for justice, and a voice against oppression and censorship. In this pivotal episode of "Q***r for Cities," join Josh as we dive into a powerful discussion with Sol and her friend and co-organizer Gaby Batista. They share their experiences with SAFE, a student-led initiative fighting against fascism in education, and talk about the power of student organizing to shape a liberated future.

🎙️ Featured Quote:
"I feel like there have always been predetermined narratives about who I should be based on what nature says. When in fact nature is a subjective concept that is very constructed by things like white supremacy and fueled by homophobia and transphobia and a fear of difference. I want to interrogate the term nature. It should be a transformative and revealing experience, a journey, a nonlinear journey, instead of something that is reductive and restrictive." - Soledad Gonzalez

🔊 Listen now to uncover how young activists like Sol and Gaby are building power and envisioning a world where education fosters true freedom and creativity. Listen here: https://www.q***rforcities.com/

Ready for episode 3 of ***rForCities? Well, it’s out now!! Join Josh for a dynamic dive into the intersections of q***r identity, urban planning, and public space with special guest Aaron Greiner from CultureHouse. Aaron is an innovative urban designer dedicated to crafting more inclusive cities, and he's here to share his insights on how q***r urbanism benefits everyone.

Audiogram Description: The image features a photo of Aaron Greiner standing against a vibrant graffiti background. Dynamic captions overlay the image, displaying his quote: "The beautiful and the challenging about cities is that they are human constructions. When you look at most places that we spend our time, a person decided to design them that way... A q***r approach to urbanism inherently centers identity, it breaks norms, and it gives people the ability to adapt their space." The graffiti backdrop adds an urban and artistic feel to the audiogram, emphasizing the theme of urban design and q***r urbanism.

What imagery makes you think of cities? This collaborative art piece was out when hanging with some creative friends. As a collage artist, as I’ve gotten more into it, I’ve realized it so connected to my love for urban design — cities are a tapestry of different shapes, colors, textures, materials, people, and cultures. An urban collage, the beauty is in the difference and diversity of many elements. We can design for more inclusive cities that also represent the different ways of being necessary for each individuals and communities thriving. — Josh

Q***r Book Recommendation: The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions by Larry Mitchell.

“It’s been a long time since the last revolutions and the faggots and their friends are still not free.”

This 1997 fantasy novel, inspired in part by Mitchell’s experience at the Lavender Hill q***r commune, helped Q***r For Cities guest MG Xiong come to terms with the idea that “q***r thriving is when we all have enough.”
What does q***r thriving mean to you?

“Heteronormative planning structures exclude and can even endanger q***r people, especially those who are trans and BIPOC.”

“Why We Need Q***r Urbanism” by Aaron Greiner sheds a light on how city planning intentionally excludes marginalized communities, and the need for a q***r-centered approach to urban design.

Q***r urbanism is a framework that challenges the cis-heteropatriarchy and celebrates q***r & trans identities and it is central to our work with Q***r For Cities.

Check out the full article by future Q***r For Cities guest Aaron Greiner and make sure to follow to catch his episode this season on Q***r For Cities 📻 ***rForCities ***rUrbanism https://www.planning.org/planning/2023/spring/why-we-need-q***r-urbanism/
