I was "protecting" my wife Joy from having to experience bad reviews for her first foray into singing and writing songs. I waited a long time to send out her record, JOYOUS for review. I finally decided too not tell her and just not show her bad reviews. This is her first review. She got a better review than my last 3 star studded releases. Here's her first review and an "Improved" old video we made at the time.

Ruffyunz II
Review by Gary Hill
This second album from Ruffyunz might be even stronger than the first. Their blend of funk, hard rock, metal, psychedelia and prog is both familiar and fresh. These guys are impossible to classify, but very easy to enjoy. There are a number of guests on the album including Don Airey, Dave Manketti and Pat Thrall, but the core band is Ed Terry, Randy Pratt, JZ Barrell and Bobby Rondinelli.
This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2023 Volume 4 More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2023.
Track by Track Review
Hype in My Head
Killer funk rock is in the driver's seat on this powerhouse opener. Everyone is positively on fire here. There are some metallic angles to this at times.
Back It On Up
While the funk is still a driving force, there are some almost prog rock angles and some world music progressions in place at times. There are parts of this that make me think of Deep Purple.
Undercover Agent for the Blues
There is a bluesy angle to this, but you expect that from the title, right. Randy Pratt adds some talk box to the tune. This is edgy and rather metallic, too. It has some funk, but not to the level we've heard on previous tunes. I think I might like this better than the two that preceded it.
Doesn't Matter
This thing gets more experimental mid-track. I really love some of the bass work. It's still got a gritty, funky edge at play. There are some killer vocal hooks, too. There is a cool, psychedelically tinged, Beatles-like section around the three-quarters mark. They also take it into some psychedelic rocking stuff beyond that.
Candyman
Driving and rocking, this song has a real sense of danger built into it. It's a powerhouse that has hints of metal and psychedelia in the mix. This is such a classic sounding song.
Dark Side
I dig this classy rocker. It has some Zeppelin in the mix along with funk, trippiness and a lot of more. It's another side of the group, but it also fits in with the rest. The guitar soloing is positively on fire.
Slither Man
To some degree this makes me think of something Zappa might have done. It has a meaty, funky blues rock angle to it. A lot of the vocals are nearly spoken. This is so classy.
Bubbles
Edgy, classic sounding funky rock is on the menu here. As timeless as this sounds, it's also got some modern edges to it. It's another winner on a disc that has no weak material.
Can't Slow Down
A driving hard rocking tune, this is a real monster. The guitar soloing on this is positively incendiary. They really take this thing through some tasty shifts and turns in the extended instrumental section. This is another that has some Zeppelin leanings.
Keep It Coming
The vocal arrangement on this is cool. The riffing is so meaty. The whole tune rocks out with a lot of style and charm. This gets really intense before it's over.
The Game
There are some intriguing angles here. Psychedelia, prog and more seem to merge here. I can make out some hints of both Deep Purple and Dream Theater on this thing. It's another that shows a different side of the act. It drops to some trippier, more sedate stuff mid-track and gradually builds out with a lot of magic in the arrangement. The song is another of my favorites here.

Our 4th good review!

ADD LINK! RUFFYUNZ (Ruffians) is a partnership between bassist Randy Pratt (Cactus / The Lizards), Emmy winning engineer / guitarist JZ Barrell, and powerhouse singer Ed Terry (Slash, Keith Richards, David Lee Roth band) – plus a collection of drum, guitar and keyboard masters.
Guest artists featured on the band’s new album “RUFFYUNZ III” starts with legendary Carmine Appice who dominates the drums, Bumblefoot Thal (Sons of Apollo), Tony Franklin (The Firm), Dave Meniketti (Y&T), Pat Travers, Pat Thrall, Jim McCarty (Cactus), Vinnie Moore (UFO), Derek Sherinian (Sons of Apollo), Tracy G (DIO), Billy “Spaceman” Patterson (Miles Davis) and others. These seasoned, “seen it all” cats really step up and put their mojo into these tracks.
Having the bassist Randy Pratt – especially with his unique, other worldly effects pedal sounds – be the co-producer of this heavy-riff classic rock album, definitely gives the music a “thick richness”. An authentic “old-school” low end bottom bassist & music producer who has true passion for real rock n’ roll and who was born to rock the groove.

There is a delicious irony in opener ‘Street Corner High’ in that Pat Travers and one time sparring partner Pat Thrall share guitar duties whilst the song recalls prime time Hughes/Thrall (it was Glenn Hughes who pinched Thrall for his own band in the early 1980s).
Bumblefoot and Derek Sherinian feature on ‘Looking For The Edge’, an insistent slice of premier league hard rock. ‘Malevolent Fool’ (with one-time Dio guitarist Tracy G.) and the doom-laden ‘Red Line’ (Bumblefoot again) keep up the relentless grind.

The band are at the best on the funkier stuff like the opener, ‘Electric Mind Control’ (with Vinnie Moore and Jesse Berlin), and ‘Far Too Long’ which sees the welcome return of Dave Meniketti or the groove of ‘Hanging’.
Billy “Spaceman” Patterson (Miles Davis, James Brown) guests on the more psychedelic ‘Warm Oasis’.
Elsewhere it can be easy to evoke classic rock glory days. The chugging rhythm of ‘Cadillac Walk’ for example (featuring Jim McCarty’s slide) takes you back to the early ’70s.

RUFFYUNZ III is dominated by an upbeat, funky feel that doubles with hard rock and blues elements. A form of dynamic eclecticism soon comes into play, prudently honoring individuals and their contributions. A crunchy, classic hard rockin’ album with some inspired performances and memorable material.
Highly Recommended

Another question that I answered on QUORA;

https://youtu.be/tFejiFFRFfcHow did the Borscht Belt resorts in the Catskills contribute to American culture, comedy, cuisine, mid-century architecture, and entertainment?

There’s a whole genre of comedy that made fun of itself at the time, and NOW, when someone goes into that character, it implies another era and is a great tool for sarcasm. My wife wrote a comedy version of a Christmas classic. I read the lyrics and, in the middle of curating my own, raunchy, almost X-***ed stuff from old videos, I told her;

“Honey, I don’t think that this is really funny.”

She went into our studio…she’s not a professional singer or performer, mind you, and went into character so perfectly, I couldn’t believe it. Where did it come from? I GOT IT, immediately. Borscht Belt, Catskills, 50s, 60s, her 1/2 Jewish heritage, brought up in Queens, NY…it all came at her command. We made this in one day last Christmas. Behold, AMERICANA!

Hard Rockers RUFFYUNZ To Release Third Album Featuring Members of Vanilla Fudge, Guns N' Roses, Dio, Cactus and Others!
RUFFYUNZ is a partnership between bassist Randy Pratt (Cactus/The Lizards), Emmy winning engineer/guitarist JZ Barrell, and singer Ed Terry and a collection of drum, guitar and keyboard masters. Guest artists featured on the band’s new album “RUFFYUNZ III” legendary Carmine Appice who dominates the drums (Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, BBA, Rod Stewart), Pat Travers, Pat Thrall (Pat Travers, Glenn Hughes, Meatloaf), Bumblefoot (Guns N' Roses, Sons of Apollo), Tony Franklin (The Firm), Dave Meniketti (Y&T), Jim McCarty (Cactus), Vinnie Moore (UFO), Derek Sherinian (Alice Cooper, Sons of Apollo), Tracy G (Dio), Billy “Spaceman” Patterson (Miles Davis) and others!
Each RUFFYUNZ record has its own vibe, so it’s hard to say “The Best”, but these seasoned, “seen it all” KOOL KATZ really step up and put their BACKS into these tracks. Having the bassist, especially with his unique, other worldly effects pedal sounds be the co-producer of this heavy riff rock definitely gives the music a “Thick, richness” that you sense subliminally.
“Funky, Heavy & Tight” is RUFFYUNZ credo!
Watch the video for ?:
Bassist Randy Pratt on bass, pedals and riffs and is best known for his work with The Lizards & Cactus. Singer Ed Terry has sung live with Stevie Wonder, Sister Sledge, John Oates, Sissy Houston, Slash and recorded with John Lennon, Keith Richards, Talking Heads, Simply Red, Little Steven, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Fleetwood Mac, David Lee Roth, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner! JZ Barrell handles recording, engineering, mixing and arranging…he earns his writing credits.
Says Randy, “Still written bass/drums first, with a whole new cast of STAR POWER. Still at the sweet spot where Black Sabbath and James Brown meet. The sound is Classic but somehow unique, in our own universe.”
Carmine Appice, literally the man who created modern rock drumming in 1966, 'The GodFather', Glenn Hughes called him 'The last man playing'. Still at the top of his game, drives these tracks into groove heaven.
Here’s what the press has said about the first two RUFFYUNZ’s albums:
“This nine-track album has a great mixture of rock and funk, with powerful vocals and heavy guitar riffs...This amazing album was well performed, recorded, produced and written and I highly recommend this album for your rock library.” - Oasis Entertainment
“Second album for Ruffyunz, partnership between Randy Pratt (Cactus/ The Lizards), JZ Barrell (Emmy Award Winning producer) & singer Ed Terry is a collection of LARGE musicians. Among the guests on this exciting Record, the legendary Bobby Rondinelli on drums (Black Sabbath, Rainbow, BOC), Don Airey at keyboards (Deep Purple),and a bevy of guitarists from the likes of Dave Maniketti (Y&T), Pat Thrall (Pat Travers, Glenn Hughes, Meatloaf, Asia), Tracy G. (DIO) and Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake). The result is excellent: 9 songs with a great blend of rock-blues and funk, with vocals powerful and fiery guitar riffs.” - CLASSIC ROCK, ITALIA
“Violent riffs and elastic tunes: veteran artists find new twists and turns on their new venture and invite Pat Travers to traverse a different expanse.” - DMME.net
“The overall feel of the 9 songs on this debut is funky hard rock, the groove laden tunes proving to be a launching pad for Terry’s powerful vocals and plenty of white hot soloing from Berlin & Travers especially. Pretty heavy stuff here on this debut release from Ruffyunz, a crunchy blues/funk/hard rock project that is off to a great start thanks to some inspired performances and memorable material.” - Sea of Tranquility
“With the 3rd song, “PRESSURE”, the whole armada launched an attack Wirth VOLCANIC FIREPOWER. The assault is given by a horde of brass, playing in unison, fiery and hyper hard guitar riffs, a voice pushed to the EXTREME, but held by the FIRE OF GOD and intermediaries always funky. This title is undoubtedly to be placed in the BEST SONGS IN THE HISTORY OF ROCK! WHAT A SLAP!” 10 / 10. MAREK DEVEAUX - profilprog.com
“To simplify the analysis, we will summarize Ruffyunz’s musical style to the first two words of the title of the seventh song on his plate: ‘Funky’ and ‘Heavy’ and we will add, for good measure, the term ‘Classic Rock’! Black Sabbath or not, whatever, Ruffyunz is a real pleasure to listen to and therefore highly recommendable in these difficult times!” - Music In Belgium

Hey, check out " GROOVEYARD". Me and the "hyperspacerecords.com> gang were blessed to be discovered by a venerable, established, like minded American company that does things similar to us in some ways. They make records with heroes, many unfairly "Unsung" from the Classic Rock "heavy riff rock" style...not technically "Heavy Metal", but maybe HEAVIER than metal, IMO. They first approached me to be the company to sell actual cds of the music that's on the hyperspacerecords.com website...yes, some people still want cds...count ME in that group. On this new release, "MOUNTAIN of POWER Volume FIVE", my long time Cactus partner Jimmy Kunes and I were invited to put bass and VOCALS ( yes, when it's Jimmy, it's all capitals ) on a really cool mashup of 2 great Humble Pie songs, one from their "Street Rats" album and another an obscurity that I'd never heard...both were sung by bassist Greg Ridley. I think I'm gonna buy some to hand out to friends. Please check out . There are people...maybe a little crazy, maybe not young, who put a LOT of energy into creating, preserving and honoring a genre of music that deserves to live in our heads and hearts. I'm gonna place myself in there...and my new friends at Grooveyard...I strongly suggest that you all just go peruse their site.

Another question that I answered on the site QUORA;
What is your opinion on The Beach Boys and The Beatles? Why do you feel this way and do you think your opinion is better than others’?
They are the first 2 bands that got me addicted to music. Actually, The Beach Boys a little bit before The Beatles. I was in 5th grade and a friend played me his older brother’s Beach Boys album. I remember really being taken by Dennis Wilsons hair…long bangs that seemed so cool and the song “Little Deuce Coupe”.
Shortly after, when I saw The Beatles photo on the cover of LIFE magazine in 1964, my DNA shifted…before I even heard their music.
I am so grateful that I was born exactly when I was. I was just old enough to be taken by the beginning of a social / artistic wave that swept up the generation that was large enough and society was able to allow them to become the arbiters of fashion, art, music, movies, literature…but still new enough for there to be a level of resistance from adults to make it a battle, albeit a fun one.
My father not allowing me to have a “Beatle Haircut” and Beatle boots sadly and stupidly had a lasting bad effect on our relationship for some formative years that I wish I could go back and be “the adult” and erase, but it all MATTERED so much.
I’m kind of still there.
The Beatles were / are so much a part of me. No so much their music anymore. I never play it anymore…I did so much, it's IN me.
I feel like I was born and grew up in the best place (Long Island, New York…about a 40 minute train ride from NYC, where I moved in 1978 )at the best time (1953) that ever was and, sadly, maybe ever will be.
The Beatles are like a big tattoo across my chest that I don’t even need to get…it’s just there. They only cross my mind when someone asks something like this now, but you see what pops out, stream of conscious.
I remember when they broke up, I was in 11th grade and it was like “Do we have to get jobs and be NORMAL now”?
The world will never be that innocent again and things will never matter that much again. I see young people groping for the feeling that we had then, making up causes and trying so hard to create MEANING in their lives. It sounds silly, I guess, but The Beatles just kind of handed it to us. They…and WE had “THE MOMENT”.

NICE ITALIAN REVIEW OF "RUFFYUNZ II";
Voilà an excellent record of unusual hard rock, typified by a vocal imprint that clearly recalls the more acute and biting Glenn Hughes . The former Deep Purple bassist , however, also seems to provide inspiration for some funky-rock sounds that are cyclically found when listening to the entire work.
Exceptions are certainly the songs " Bubbles " and " The Game ", which maintain an exquisitely hard rock imprint but on a system that seems to recall the Peter Gabriel at the turn of the 80s and 90s more devoted to rhythm.
Also, " Doesn't Matter ": a certain experimental vocation seems to be recalled of the former , particularly of an oriental nature; from the latter the hard rock structure resumed , once again a post - Gillan / Glover period .
The legendary English group is called into question a third time also thanks to the guests of Don Airey , whose imprint can be clearly found in the solo of " Back It On " , and of Joel Hoekstra , organic in the current Whitesnake , who plays acrobatically in " Can't Slow Down ".
In closing, excellent news: rumors refer to another 5 albums in the works, in the name of this staff, with even more numerous presences of renowned artists.
