Werkin! Drums percussion vocals lyrics ...
Sound demo and video demonstration of the Gunjei Rhythm from the Garifuna people of the coast of central America. I bought this segunda drum in Hopkins Belize on a recent trip to visit and study. . The skin is deer, not sure of the wood. This drum measures about 13.5" and is pretty short. I saw and played a few different sized drums when I was there including the extremely large "temple" drums that are played in groups of three. The segunda (female drum) functions as the timekeeper and defines the rhythm while the smaller primero (male drum) improvises and interacts with the dancers. The gunjei rhythm is played exactly the same as the cuembe rhythm from Puerto Rico, demonstrating once again the resiliency and tenacity of the African peoples who were brought here to maintain and preserve their culture and traditions. Pa donde quiera el tambor africano!

Very fortunate to have found out that members of Los Muñequitos de Matanzas were in Houston for a dance class. Managed to set up a lesson at the shed at the last minute before they left. So much language and history involved... it really would take a lifetime to absorb the knowledge these cats have. Gracias poe la leccion. Aprendiendo cada dia!
