WHEWWWW Nikki Giovanniiiiii this one hurtttttttsss! 😩

I met Ms. Giovanni a few times while when in college and I got to hear her speak. This is from the very first time I met her. I don’t want to age myself but Chile, you see the quality of that photo. 🥴🤣 I first heard “Ego Tripping” as a little girl, and once I heard it as a young woman who now owned multiple books of Nikki Giovanni’s poetry…I cried out of gratitude. It hit differently once I got older. It was (and still is) one of the most amazing “GIRL REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE!”pieces of art that I’ve ever experienced. Nikki Giovanni was DIFFERENT. Her aura was on ten trillion. Outspoken and full of fire and passion! And of course, her pen game was incomparable.

This is only for those who get it, and who know. I was reflecting on my journey and I realized that I have always been about a direct conversation. For better, or for worse.🥴🤣 But sometimes we (because I’m never above what I say to others) put on shoes that aren’t even our size. If you know, you know. It’s Thursday, and here is a throwback. This is how I started Spiritual Homegirl. God, gems of wisdom, and golds. G thangs. 🤣 I’ve grown a lot in these 8 last years, but my love for golds will never go away. It’s not necessarily a Southern thing for me, because folks in other parts of the country wear them too. It’s truly an ancestral thing, lodged deeply within my heart. Elders that I respected had permanent golds. I never viewed gold teeth as “thuggish” as it wasn’t presented that way to me as a child. My cousins, aunties, etc. had golds and they were good people. Loving, kind-hearted to all, family oriented. When I snuck and got my first grill, I remember being so excited to wear them out. Some people have already stereotyped golds and the people who wear them because of their own experiences, and that’s not for me to understand or cast over my own life and intentions. But when I wear them, whether it was in the past or otherwise, it’s in honor of my ancestors. ❤️🌟
