Maulidi, or the celebration of Prophet Muhammad's (SAW) birthday, is a cherished tradition for many Muslims, but it is essential to acknowledge that it has no basis in the Quran or the authentic Hadith (prophetic traditions). In fact, the Prophet (SAW) himself warned against innovations in religion, saying, 'Every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance leads to the Hellfire' (Hadith narrated by Al-Tirmidhi).
The early Muslim community, the Sahabah, also warned against such innovations. For example, Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA), a companion of the Prophet (SAW), said, 'Do not introduce new things in Islam, for every innovation is misguidance' (Hadith narrated by Al-Bukhari).
Renowned Islamic scholars throughout history have also cautioned against celebrating Maulidi. For instance:
- Imam Shafi'i (RA) said, 'Innovations are the most evil things in religion' (Hadith narrated by Al-Bayhaqi).
- Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (RA) warned, 'Do not celebrate my birthday, for it is an innovation' (Hadith narrated by Al-Tabarani).
- Ibn Taymiyyah (RA) wrote, 'Celebrating the Prophet's (SAW) birthday is an innovation that was not practiced by the Sahabah or the early Muslim community' (Majmu' al-Fatawa).
While the intention behind celebrating Maulidi may be to show love and reverence for the Prophet (SAW), it is crucial to prioritize authenticity and adhere to the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah, rather than innovating practices that may inadvertently lead to deviation from the straight path. Let us heed the warnings of the Sahabah and Islamic scholars and focus on following the Prophet's (SAW) teachings and example in our daily lives.
