Many people in the DNA surprise community grew up with dads, or birth certificate fathers, BCFs as they’re often called. We are raised by these men and then one day, through a DNA test or other means, we learn that they are not our biological fathers.

But what if you never really felt like you had a dad? How does a DNA surprise affect you?

In this week’s episode, Alissa shares how her free-spirited mother had her and her twin brother on her own, before marrying their stepfather.

Alissa remembers asking questions - “Do we have a dad?” and getting the same explanation each time. He lived in another state, he had gone to prison, they’d tried to make it work but did not.

In her early 20s, Alissa attempted to build a relationship with who she believed was her biological father, Jim, even finding an “Uncle Dad” through his brother Rick.

After taking a DNA test, everything she thought she knew was upended.

Thank you for sharing your story, Alissa.

Listen to Alissa’s story wherever you listen to podcasts.

Makes perfect sense

The bizarre behaviors of disorganized attachment are your child's attempt to avoid feeling something that is not only terrifying but leaves them feeling trapped, stuck, and hopeless.

It is very very hard to be in relationship with someone who has a history of disorganized attachment.

And it is possible to take steps to untangle how connection & danger have been tied together in the nervous system.

Raising Kids with Big, Baffling Behaviors is a USA Today Best Seller! You can get it in paperback, eBook or audio wherever you buy books online.

As we close out on Sept and move into general election season, it's more important than ever for adoptees to stay informed about candidates at the state and local levels. We need lawmakers who are committed to immigration reform, working towards citizenship for all. We also need leaders who will listen to adoptee voices when baby box legislation arises in their districts and who will advocate for adoptees' right to access their original birth certificates. Make a plan, and be sure to vote this Nov!

If you are trying to recover from trauma, I highly recommend the book "What my bones know". It's excellent and if you can listen to it on audible or Spotify, I recommend that too because the author reads it and you get to hear excerpts of therapy sessions she had with a Dr. Han (unsure of spelling)
There's a workbook too.
