Dirk Powell

You know the WTJU Folk hosts love us some Dirk Powell!

Excited to share a brand new video of my original song, "I Ain't Playing Pretty Polly," available now here: https://CompassRecords.lnk.to/yGTum with pre-orders of the album "When I Wait For You" ready to go here: https://CompassRecords.lnk.to/WIWFY

Audio by Dirk Powell. Videography by Irena Eide. Editing by Jody Spence. YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GKa8tBl_T4

Thanks to all of you who have downloaded or listened to the song and offered feedback. I'm particularly grateful to have heard from victims of abuse about what the song has meant to them. When I've played it live, some audience members have come to me with tears of gratitude and others have walked out in the middle of the performance. That's ok with me. I would rather offend someone who feels threatened by my take on this aspect of tradition than further traumatize someone who has been the victim of violence. That may seem like a hypothetical situation but it's not. As was pointed out previously, songs like "Pretty Polly" or "Knoxville Girl" are often given a humorous introduction these days, to distance the singer from them and portray them as if the violence is so exaggerated and over-the-top that it couldn't possibly be taken seriously. A friend of mine performed "Knoxville Girl" from this perspective, once, and was approached by a victim of abuse afterwards. She was shaking and sobbing, and just asking, why? Why give voice to this violence? The song brought her back into the abuse. I will gladly offend someone who doesn't like my take on this before I will risk the possibility of further hurting an innocent victim of abuse in this way again.

I performed and recorded the worst of these songs for a very long time. I own that. I'm done now. I had a revelation in the middle of singing "Pretty Polly," when I remembered my daughters trying to accept the violence in these songs as if it meant nothing, since it seemed to mean nothing to anyone else. I can't do it anymore. I have other songs to sing, like this one.
