When you’re choosing a font, for your brand or an ad hoc design project, it’s so important to test it out!

There are thousands of fonts and so many variations to consider, so you’ll want to type out all the:
☑️ letters (upper and lower case)
☑️ numbers
☑️ special characters
☑️ specific words
☑️ styles (thin, bold, italics, underline)

😆Sometimes timing is everything!

Earlier this month, I shared a few guides for creating aesthetically pleasing posts and guides for the different aspect ratios used in posts vs. grid view.

⬆️Well, if you haven't heard by now, Instagram's mobile grid view has gone vertical!

Gone are the days of the clean square (1x1) grid, and now we're seeing a more portrait-oriented view to align with the algorithm's favoring of 3x4 posts and video content.

Don't fret! The platform actually put [somewhat of] a failsafe in to get your grid looking pretty again.

From the IG app (on mobile):
1️⃣Grid view: tap and hold the post or
_ Post view: tap the ellipses (...) on the top right.
2️⃣Select Adjust Preview
3️⃣Tap Fit and save

You'll also have the option of a white or black background to fill the top and bottom space around your square images.

Last week I shared a tip about safe zones and how you can leverage the rulers and guides in Canva to make sure your high value content is visible.

🙄But who has time to set their guidelines for every design?

This is where Brand Templates shine!

📐Just set your guidelines for the desired safe zone and save the design as a Brand Template so you can use it as often as you need to!

In this example, I used my standard Tip Tuesday template which is an Instagram Portrait (4:5) Post sized to 1080 x 1350 px. The safe zone for what is saved to your profile grid is the standard IG square post (1080 x 1080 px).

➕Now you'll want to reserve the same amount of space at the top and bottom of the design so take the total height of 1350 and subtract 1080 = 170, but divide that by 2 leaving you with 135 px at the top and 135 px from the bottom! ➖

Set the top guideline at 135 (because the top of that axis is 0), and set the bottom guideline at 1215 (because that's 135 from the bottom axis which is 1350).

I'll be honest, coming back from a relatively restful holiday break felt more challenging than I anticipated. And even though I wanted to kick off the new year with a new logo and branding package for Brian M. Reiser - Strategic SEO Consultant, I trusted that I chose to focus on the right activities earlier in the week to clear my headspace and channel more creative energy.

👌🏻So, when Brian responded to the logo mockups with a quintuple "yes", I knew I made the right call!

Canva makes creating visual content super easy (and fun!) but there are a few things to keep in mind for your designs, like aspect ratios and safe zones.

📐Most social media platforms have posted aspect ratios and this is where Canva typically shines!

Just type in Instagram post, for example, and Canva will retrieve thousands of templates and blank designs in the appropriate aspect ratio.

❗️Where things get a little tricky is with each platform’s safe zones.

A safe zone is a designated area within a layout where critical elements like text, logos, or important images should be placed; it is considered the "safe" space within the design where content should remain to maintain visual integrity.

⛔️In other words, there are some areas outside the safe zone that get hidden or cut off by overlapping text, buttons, features, etc.

⚠️Because these zones are frequently changing, it’s best to seek the most recent guidance from a trustworthy source or do your own research.

📏Once you know the safe zones, you can use the rules and guides within Canva to confirm your critical design elements are within the safe zone boundaries.

🗯️I take pride in my work so you can take pride in yours!

This is one of my new taglines because, after many months of sharing intros in networking communities, I felt like my messaging was getting stale.

In one of those very communities, we were asked to share the best advice we ever received. I was thinking hard on it, but I couldn't seem to get away from the sentiment my 6th grade teacher shared: "you take pride in your work."

So it was more than fitting that Chickbook Creative reflected that back to me during our last project! 🥰

Prepping a portfolio post of your Canva creations?

There are several ways to copy pages of your existing designs into new designs -- here's one!

1. Create a new design in Canva.
2. On the editor side panel, click on Projects.
3. Click on the Designs tab.
4. Click on the design you want to copy. If the design has multiple pages, click on the page(s) you want to copy. It’ll be automatically added to the design you’re working on.

And, if you click the Brand Templates tab instead of the Designs tab, you can slot in your templates mid-design, too!

🎨How to apply the colors from a photo to your Canva template or design: If you don't have a Brand Kit established in your Canva account, here's a handy workaround to apply your brand colors to any design in as little as one click!🖱️ 1. Save your color palette as an image (jpg or png). Make sure the image doesn't contain any colors outside of your brand colors. 2. Copy and paste or upload the color palette image into your current design. 🎨 3. Right click on the color palette image and select 'apply colors to page'. 4. Your brand colors have now been applied to your design! ✅ 5. Optional: You can cycle through the colors for different combinations by repeating step 3 above. 6.
