A few snaps from last Sunday's walk from Meadowhall to Wincobank Iron Age hill fort. I was so glad to have done it on a day that actually felt like summer! I'm running a nature writing walk and workshop here on Sunday 7th July (see my website link in my biog for details). So many contrasts and so much history and nature on this walk. You need to walk uphill for a while, but the views are amazing, so make sure you come up the hill on a clear day!

Belated photos from a rather muddy Bearded Theory. The first photo is of me coming favourite in the herbal gin competition! The second photo is of the River Trent running right past the site and very full! The festival was great apart from that day of incredible rain on the Wednesday. Even saw my friend perform with the March Violets!

Not many people would expect to start a walk starting from Meadowhall Shopping Centre to take in spooky abandoned railway stations, ancient woodland and an Iron Age Hill Fort, but that's exactly what I did on Sunday, in preparation for my next nature writing walk and workshop. Here's the link to book your place. I hope that my blog post will intrigue and entice you to come along....

I'm writing this with aching legs after a practice walk for the Spring Nature Walk and Writing Workshop I'm running next Saturday, on 20th April at 10am. Don't worry though! I think I'm prone to aching more than most people and I added a few miles onto the journey by setting off from home in Walkley by foot. It was worth it for the views!...

A lovely Rivelin Valley walk yesterday afternoon! Just thirty minutes' walk from my house and I'm in one of the most scenic places, where there would have been many busy mills making cutlery and other tools, now the ruins are picturesque. I haven't been down here for a walk since early last autumn and the big storms in the autumn and winter have really moved things around! We turned back where the path had been washed away!

A walk through the Ponderosa park in Sheffield this morning, getting the best of the bright weather and popped into our local parish church, At Mary's in Walkley, which has some amazing modern stained glass windows installed in 2019 that I didn't know about. The main window doesn't come across very well in the photos though!

A return to Yorkshire Sculpture Park to be in the audience for poet at the culmination of her residency at it looks sunny but it was a very windy day with a chance of heavy rain so I'm glad that the performance was changed to a much cosier indoor venue!

I can't believe it's day 6 in Whitby, our last full day! It was wildly windy and rainy when we arrived at Ravenscar this morning as I wanted to see the town that never was! It was planned as a resort in the 1900s but it never got built! We walked to the remains of the alum works, and an old brick works and walked back on the old railway track.
After drying off, we had a lovely browse in and the evening sky was stunning from the pier.

Day 4 in Whitby! Today was pretty rainy and foggy too at times. We walked to Sandsend via the grounds of Raithwaite Hall and then walked through the Mulgrave estate to the ruins of medieval Mulgrave Castle. Then we walked back to Whitby, freshened up and had a game of pirate crazy golf!

Day 3 in Whitby! A wander around Whitby today, with a huge charity shopping spree, veggie friendly chips with a pineapple fritter and mushy peas for lunch from Mister Chips and another trip up the 199 steps to visit the church, which is currently being renovated. We walked to the end of the East Pier and finished off our shopping trip with some restorative time in !

Day 2 in Whitby. We caught a bus to Robin Hood's Bay, which took about fifteen minutes, and I had my first sea paddle of the year. It was freezing! I had a visit from a gorgeous red tailed bumble bee 🐝 before walking back to Whitby on the cinder path, which is an old railway line converted into a walking route. We avoided the Cleveland Way coastal path because the people walking into Robin Hood's Bay from the coast path were caked in mud. Three hours later, we arrived back in Whitby and somehow had the energy to go up the 199 steps to the abbey for refreshments at the youth hostel cafe!

Day 1 in Whitby! Through the keyhole in the rain, but it started to clear up as we followed the river and the railway line to Ruswarp. After a coffee in the garden centre in Sleights, we walked back to Ruswarp over some muddy but not too muddy fields before heading back to Whitby on the ancient Monk's Trod path. The monks very thoughtfully laid stone slabs along the route to avoid wet feet!

walk and workshop part four! What lies behind those mysterious gates? Some beautiful almshouses, still lived in by older people. We all wanted to live there! We wandered around again, marvelling about the contrast between the restored parts which feel full of life, and feel very safe, and Parkhill as it used to be. We finished our walk with drinks, food and time to scribble and share our ideas at the who really looked after us! 😋 .writersworkshop Thank you to everyone who came to the workshop, to the weather and who will get his own post!!

walk and workshop part three! We walked past - past inhabited, renovated flats and derelict flats awaiting demolition. The flats now have a feeling of being surrounded by trees, close to nature, as well as fantastic views. We talked about gentrification and wondered what had happened to the people who used to live here. Then we reached the site of the former Claywood Drive flats, which used to dominate the skyline and a couple of friends lived in them. They were knocked down about twenty years ago but it may as well be centuries.
Then we clambered up to the Cholera Monument - the plaque makes for chilling reading but nowadays, it's a lovely, tranquil park that feels miles away from the city centre.
