Long before Abu Dhabi became a hotspot for mega Formula One races such as the Grand Prix, hosting such as race in the region was literally unheard up. Until 2004, that is. In 2004 Bahrain hosted the first-ever Grand Prix in the Middle East and put the region on the map in terms of large sporting events.

A powerful storm pounded Istanbul and other parts of Turkey on Monday, killing at least four people and causing havoc in the city of 15 million people, reports said.
The victims included a woman who died in Istanbul’s Esenyurt district, where strong gusts tore off part of a roof and it landed on her and her child, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported. The child survived with injuries.

The Istanbul governor’s office said three other people were killed in the city, including a foreign national. Nineteen people were injured, including three people who were in serious condition, it said.
The gusts also knocked down a clock tower, television images showed. The winds blew away 33 roofs, uprooted 192 trees, knocked down 52 traffic lights and road signs and damaged 12 cars, according to the Istanbul municipality.

The Bosporus, the narrow waterway that bisects the city, was closed to maritime traffic and ferry services were canceled.
At least six Turkish Airlines flights scheduled to land in Istanbul were diverted to the cities of Ankara and Izmir, an airline spokesman said.
The strong winds also forced authorities to cancel ferry services between the coastal resorts of Bodrum and Datca, the private DHA news agency reported.

Iran wants the verifiable lifting of economic sanctions it is under, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said on Friday, three days before nuclear talks resume in Vienna.

Monday’s indirect talks between the United States and Iran, with the participation of major powers, aim at bringing the two countries into full compliance with a 2015 deal. Washington abandoned the accord in 2018 and reimposed crippling sanctions on Iran.

“If the opposing sides are prepared to return to their full obligations and the lifting of sanctions, a good and even immediate agreement can be reached,” Amirabdollahian said in a telephone conversation with the European Union's foreign policy chief, Joseph Borrell.

“Iran wants a good and verifiable agreement,” Iranian media quoted Amirabdollahian as saying.

Separately, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammad Eslami, said the Vienna talks will not be about "nuclear issues", but rather about the United States' return to the 2015 nuclear deal, Iranian media reported.

International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi said on Wednesday following a trip to Tehran this week that he had made no progress on several disputes, the most pressing of which was getting access to the workshop at the TESA Karaj complex two months after Iran promised to grant it.

"We are close to the point where I would not be able to guarantee continuity of knowledge," Grossi said.

However, Amirabdollahian told Borrell that Iran would attend the Vienna talks in “good faith” - despit

Bahrain’s size or lack thereof might throw you for a loop. The Gulf nations takes third place for the smallest countries in Asia. The only two countries smaller than Bahrain are Singapore, which is a city-state; and the Maldives. At just 295 square miles, its just a smidge larger than the Caribbean’s Dominica. However, despite its small size, it remains a key player in Middle Eastern trading and economics.

Women have been banned from appearing in television dramas in Afghanistan under new rules imposed by the Taliban government.
Female journalists and presenters have also been ordered to wear headscarves on screen, although the guidelines do not say which type of covering to use.
Reporters say some of the rules are vague and subject to interpretation.
The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in mid-August and many fear they are gradually imposing harsh restrictions.

The militant Islamist group, which took control following the departure of US and allied forces, almost immediately instructed girls and young women to stay home from school.

The Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) lifted the social distancing rule applied at mosques since last year following an improvement of the situation related to COVID-19 pandemic.

Diyanet President Ali Erbash said in a circular sent to muftiates across the country on Friday that prayers can be performed in “saf” order (arrays or straight lines of the faithful who should be as close to each other as possible during prayers). Erbash, however, urged the faithful to continue compliance with hygiene and mandatory protective mask rules while performing prayers.

The country had closed mosques for congregational prayers in the early days of the pandemic, but they were reopened in May 2020, on the condition that social distancing is observed. Friday prayers, required to be performed in a congregation for all able-bodied Muslims, proved a challenge, however. Prayers, already crowded and mostly performed outside the mosques due to a large number of people present, further grew in size, with people eager to maintain social distancing having to perform prayers with the prayer mats, sometimes, on the streets.

Erbash hailed the lack of any serious problems stemming from the pandemic at the mosques thanks to the vigilance of mosque staff and the faithful. He cited the reasons to remove the social distancing rule for farz (obligatory) prayers inside the mosques as the approaching winter, which will make it difficult to perform prayers outside, and the increased vaccination rate across the country.

U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Rob Malley will travel to the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain Nov. 11-20 to coordinate ahead of fresh talks about reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, the U.S. State Department said.

"He will coordinate our approaches on a broad range of concerns with Iran, including its destabilizing activities in the region and the upcoming seventh round of talks on a mutual return to full compliance with the (deal)," the statement said, referring to the Nov. 29 resumption of indirect U.S.-Iran talks.

The upcoming talks in Vienna seek to get Washington and Tehran to resume compliance with the nuclear deal, under which Iran restrained its nuclear program in return for relief from U.S., EU and U.N. sanctions.

Then-U.S. President Donald Trump abandoned the deal in 2018 and restored broad U.S. sanctions, prompting Iran to begin violating its nuclear restrictions about a year later.

Afghan girl’ photographed by Steve McCurry in 1984. This photo of Sharbat Gula became one of the most iconic photographs ever taken - it ended up on the front cover of National Geographic and became it’s most successful edition, as well as inspiring them to set up an Afghan Children’s Fund, which has raised over $1 million to help Afghan refugees. Sadly, she only found out about the success of the portrait in 2002 at age 30.

Those who remained silent on the three-decade occupation of Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region are responsible for the tragedies and bloodshed that took place there, said Turkey’s president.
Erdoğan stressed that Turkey is in a position to control the numbers of hospitalization, cases in intensive care units, and fatalities.

With normalization steps, Turkey has left behind the problems the pandemic measures caused in the fields of tourism and trade, he added.

Shusha, Azerbaijan's cultural and historical capital, was liberated last fall after 28 years of Armenian occupation.

At least 22 passengers were killed on Tuesday in Pakistan’s part of Kashmir after a bus they were on skidded off a mountain road and fell into a deep ravine, police said.
The accident happened in Pulandri, a district in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, senior police official Fayyaz Abbasi said. He said several passengers were also injured in the crash and rescuers transported the dead and injured to a nearby hospital.

It was not clear what caused the accident and police feared the death toll could rise as some injured were listed in critical condition.
Road accidents are common in mountainous Kashmir and elsewhere in Pakistan and are often blamed on poorly maintained vehicles and highways, and widespread disregards to traffic rules by drivers.
Kashmir has been divided between Pakistan and neighboring India since their independence from British rule in 1947. The two countries each claim Kashmir in its entirety and have fought three wars between them over it.
