Chakwera Signs Makanjira Road Financing Deal

Mangochi/Makanjira Road construction is finally set to commence following the signing of a US$20 million (approximately K34 billion) financing agreement between the Saudi Fund for Development and the Malawi Government.

Presiding over the signing ceremony on the sidelines of the inaugural Saudi-Africa Summit in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, described the moment as historic.

"The generous decision by the Saudi Fund for Development to accept my proposal for the construction of the Makanjira Road is a gift that will keep on giving for generations to come," said President Chakwera.

The Malawian leader mentioned that since the beginning of their development cooperation in 2010, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has provided about US$ 50 million worth of concessional loans for various developmental projects.

President Chakwera cited the construction of a state-of-the-art 300-bed hospital in Phalombe, the financing of several teachers' training colleges, and the co-financing of the Thyolo-Makwasa-Bangula Road construction.

"This vital transport infrastructure will facilitate intra-country trade and regional trade, ushering in a new wave of prosperity for Malawi. As such, it is worthy of special recognition, and our Saudi partners deserve special thanks," he said.

In October of this year, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera embarked on a road journey to Makanjira, aiming to gain firsthand experience of the challenges faced by the local populace and all users of Makanjira Road. His primary aim was to assess the dire situation and explore potential interventions that his administration could undertake to provide lasting solutions.

The Makanjira Road has long been a cause for concern due to its narrow and deteriorating condition, further exacerbated by the damage inflicted by Cyclone Freddy, which led to the destruction of numerous bridges, making the road even more impassable.

The aftermath of Cyclone Freddy has significantly impacted the lives of Makanjira residents in Mangochi. The road's inaccessibility forced them to endure an additional financial burden, with the cost of essential commodities soaring.

The dire situation prompted Mangochi North Member of Parliament, Benedicto Chambo, to raise concerns in Parliament, urging the relevant authorities to take swift action in addressing the mobility challenges faced by his constituents, ensuring they have access to essential services and affordable goods.

The signing of the Makanjira road deal is therefore a relief to the people of Mangochi and represents a milestone in Malawi's infrastructure development.

DID YOU KNOW?

HOW HON. JZU TEMBO AND ENGINEER GEOFFREY NTAULA ESCAPED DEATH BY A WHISKER IN NOVEMBER 1987.

There is a true story...so tragic that sounds like a typical James Bond movie:

JZU was then board chair of Ethanol company while Engineer Geoffrey Ntaula was one of the staff members

Board members and staff were scheduled to fly to Nkhotakota from Chileka Airport for a meeting at the company in Nkhotakota

Everyone arrived on time at Chileka Airport. But JZU was not there yet.

While waiting for JZU, Engineer Ntaula sneaked to a nearby drinking joint to have cold beer. He would be able to see JZU's car pass by to the Airport for him to rush to check in and board the flight.

JZU later called the Airport to alert the colleagues to proceed to Nkhotakota. He mentioned that he would drive to Nkhotakota later during the day.

The colleagues looked for Engineer Ntaula, they couldn't find him. Meanwhile, Engineer Ntaula was busy drinking waiting to see JZU's vehicle passing by.

The colleagues then decided to start off without Engineer Ntaula.

Few minutes after take off, the plane crushed. All passengers on board including the pilot and flight attendant perished.

WHO WAS ENGINEER GEOFFREY NTAULA?

Engineer Geoffrey Ntaula died in 2016.

He was a senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic.

He rose to become a Head of Department and later a Dean of Engineering at the Polytechnic.

A Mangochi man of Likoma descent and related to Masauko Chipembere.

Before the academic post at Poly- UNIMA, he served at Ethanol Company as a Chief Engineer (and escaped the plane crash due to his habit of killing the bottle at Gadaga's bar near Chileka Airport).

He also served at ITG as Factory Engineer, at ESCOM as a graduate Engineer, etc.

It is government through ESCOM that sponsored his Master's degree studies in UK.

Engineer Ntaula had his weak moments with the beer bottle. He was however very intelligent.

He passed through Chichiri High School then- UK- then UK -to earn his graduate and post grad qualifications in mechanical engineering.

His speciality was Thermo Fluids, Thermodynamics and Control Systems. At his death he was also a member of the ESCOM board.

Two of his sons are engineers too. One is a civil engineer and another a mechanical engineer.

_To be continued..._
