TRADE WAR'S SHADOW: FALLOUT ON MEDIA COLLABORATION?
Colleagues, friends and clients, I've been struggling to remain silent on the ongoing -- and frankly insane-- trade tensions generated by the United States against Canada. While the headlines often focus on tariffs and economic impact, I believe we're overlooking a critical, often intangible, aspect of this conflict: the damage that anger and distrust could inflict on our cultural and creative partnerships, specifically within the television production industry.
For years, the Canadian television production community has been a powerhouse of talent, innovation, and collaboration. And for more than 25 years, I’ve been pleased to be involved as a commissioning editor and a consultant on numerous Canadian productions and co-productions. I know first-hand that Canadian creators and crews have consistently delivered exceptional content that resonates with audiences here in the U.S. , built on the talent of their production teams.
The television industry is a vital bridge between our nations. By jeopardizing this bridge, our government risks isolating ourselves and losing the rich tapestry of stories that connect us. And at a time when truth and facts are endangered in the US media, Canada’s rich tradition of solid documentaries and strong journalism is to be emulated.
That’s why I was especially honored just a few weeks ago to be named as one of “Canada’s Global Executives,” a designation awarded by the Senior Trade Commissioner at the Canadian Consulate here in NY, in recognition of my long history as an advocate for and strategic advisor to Canadian companies that are trying to explore and expand in the US market.. As a member of Canada’s Global Executives, I'm not paid, it’s just my opportunity to contribute to the success of a production community that I care deeply about.
I believe in the power of storytelling to transcend borders and build bridges, and in the talent and dedication of the Canadian media community. To my US colleagues, let's support our Canadian producers, let's champion cross-border collaboration, and let's remind the world that creativity knows no borders.
