ARTIST OF THE MOMENT: ORION [Delayed x Paradise City Festival]

It's hard to believe that we didn’t interview our long-term friends from Orion yet! We featured Nicolò and Simone’s music multiple times on the blog and their "Delayed with… Orion" is one of our most listened podcasts with 40k plays. And rightfully so. The two Italian DJs and producers seem to always strike the right balance between joy and melancholia, depth and drive and - and, one quality I admire most in artists: they do THEIR thing. We still soak in the warm memories from our Pintai x Delayed party in Amsterdam in March, where Orion played a beautiful live set. They also shared the stage together with their friend Ateq as Pale Product, their mysterious collaborative project. Now, they will perform at the Paradise City Festival in Belgium - a festival that is not only known for its sustainability but also for expanding its curation more and more. This year, Orion will perform on the Sweet Spot stage, beautifully set in front of a castle with many other friends of Delayed.
So, as it is about time that we chat with Orion, we took this occasion to dive a bit deeper into the Orion universe.

PREMIERE: Claudio PRC & Rambadu - Matika [Rambadu]

After nearly five years since the Rambadu label was created and drawing inspiration from the Himalayas and the universal connections between people, the inner worlds we perceive, and the diverse ways we experience life, Rotterdam-based techno explorer Rambadu joins forces with Italian sound sculptor Claudio PRC to deliver "Sai Matika," a three-track EP centered around the theme of water and its properties.

"Matika," the EP's second chapter, perfectly exemplifies the power of minimalism when done right. Both Ramabadu and Claudio are known for their deep, hypnotic techno, sometimes venturing into tribal and atmospheric territories. Matika possesses all these qualities, but truly appreciating its intricacies requires focused listening.
The track boasts a well-balanced groove that grabs you from the start, but the real magic lies beneath the surface, in the atmospheric depths that evoke the feeling of being submerged in a pristine lake. Everything sways gently, creating a sense of life pulsing through the crystal-clear waters, like the flora and fauna of a hidden Yucatan cenote. These cenotes might appear unremarkable on the surface, but a closer look reveals a whole world within. That's the essence of "Matika."

The vision for the Third Eye Festival is deeply rooted in creating and sharing an intimate musical and artistic gathering. The organizers have invited some of their favorite artists from around the globe and couldn’t be more excited about the talent they are bringing together over these three days.

Valentin and Juli, the co-founders of the Third Eye Festival, aim to take their musical family on a listening journey through ambient music and deep techno and inspire guests to express themselves through collective art creation and ambient sound baths. Juli says, “We love gathering energies and the feeling of becoming whole on the dance floor while being surrounded by nature.”

This multi-sensory journey, featuring acclaimed global and local artists and a Funktion-One sound system, will take place at Secret Forest, an old abandoned airport surrounded by nature. Valentin adds, “We found the perfect location for this second edition and we are pairing the beautiful atmosphere with curated projections and an organic stage inspired by Japanese festivals. This is the gathering that we’ve been envisioning for a long time finally taking shape, and we couldn’t be happier!”

To imagine, to visualize, to see the unseen, and to tune in. These are the qualities embodied by Ajna, better known as the Third Eye.

PREMIERE: ABSIS - Silent Voices [AFFIN]

Deep, rhythmic sounds… rumbling through space and time are the hallmark of Spanish producer Absis, and his productions that range from Ambient, to Techno and beyond. The talents are ever so showcased with every release, and DJ mix that he publishes. Ever so smooth, and refined, a musical journey that is expertly crafted with restraint and gravitas. Unsurprisingly we look to Joachim Spieths’ Affin label as his latest foray would be the second released on the German label.

Silent Voices, the title track starts off with heavy, thudding kicks as dark pads swirl mysteriously around, setting the tone for the duration of the track. Accompanying the percussive elements are disembodied, wispy voices that beg for attention yet give no heed to their inner meanings. Overall there is a feeling of growing anticipation. That change in the night from the blissful beginnings to those of an energetic night ahead, with each kick bringing you closer to the crescendo ahead.

Silent Voices, and in turn the rest of the release will be out on Affin, the 5th of July.

PREMIERE: Minjoon - Chiaro [Initiate]

Call and response, ebb and flow. The natural give and take of light and dark are what make so many tracks and releases stand out from others. This concept of Chiaroscuro or strong, bold, contrasts between light and dark, that affect and define so many releases. How common, is a theme that we can all identify but may not name immediately, for what it’s worth. Contextually, it makes Minjoon, and in turn what Initiate Records are using as an idea and artistic focus all the better, as they play with the notion of musical freedom and let their friends and artists they trust, define themselves under an idea rather than defined sound.

Minjoon’s contribution to this series will be released on the 14th of June. We’ll be watching, and listening closely, beyond.

Delayed with... Konduku @ Mostra 2024 [Delayed x Mostra]

In just three editions, Mostra Festival has achieved what many events aspire to but rarely reach – consistently bringing out the best in the artists who perform. Part of this success is due to perfectly matching the music to the specific time slots and settings. Following Sybil's meticulously timed and skillfully executed mix, the responsibility of closing the "day portion" at the Foso stage was assigned to one of Amsterdam's finest exports, Konduku.

While many anticipated his signature polyrhythmic brain dance style, a great DJ knows how to read the moment and adapt accordingly. Konduku delivered a quirky, minimal techno set that had us bopping against Castell's walls the entire time. The set never lost its momentum, with unexpected synth stabs and a flurry of mid-high percussion adding a delightfully offbeat twist to the steady four-on-the-floor rhythm.

It was a gloriously weird sunset, and that's a good thing.

Favorite Releases from May 2024

During May, we enjoyed the early signs of summer alongside much-needed showers that nurtured the surrounding fauna. The festival season began in full swing, bringing with it an impressive array of recent music releases. We saw the Perpen crew's Grabaciones Perpendiculares record label debut with its first outstanding release. Circular Limited introduced Martin Allin's ambient work, which includes excellent remixes by Polygonia and Warmth.SVLBRD.

Keplrr made a strong debut on Midgar Records, and Aniara Recordings highlighted its co-founder Dorisburg's first White Label release, which also featured two standout tracks from fellow co-founder Arkajo. Caldera presented a solid four-track offering on Melifera Records, while ABSIS explored rhythmic intricacies for Hivern Discs. Priori unveiled his most ambitious project yet, and Sanguine continued to impress with his warm productions. DBridge and Forest Drive West created a broken beat paradise for Exit Records UK, and Significant Other launched the new Pain Management label with the "When it Rains" EP.

May brought us a wealth of musical talent and creativity.

Delayed with... Timnah @ Mostra 2024 [Delayed x Mostra]

The time has come to reflect on some of the standout performances from this year’s remarkable Mostra Festival. There were some program adjustments, and new stages were added compared to last year. We had more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors around and inside the Castell De Montjuïc. Thursday at the Hangar provided a perfect opening, a special day for all of us who cherish ambient, experimental, and obscure music. The Pati stage at the Castell De Montjuïc was a brilliant addition and hit the mark perfectly.

But let's start from the end with the festival's closing set, the grand finale. The Mostra crew meticulously planned the lineup, giving the honor of closing this magical extended weekend to one of their residents - Timnah. Given the high caliber of talent at Mostra, ending the festival on a high note was no simple task. Yet, what we witnessed (and what you will hear in this recording) was a masterful set from a DJ who truly knows her craft.

Following an impressive performance by Rrose, Timnah took the stage with a flawlessly curated techno set.

In this musical laboratory, Timnah was an alchemist, deftly mixing familiar elements with a slightly more energetic twist than usual. For the first 30 minutes, she kept the base simmering at a low “fire,” allowing the atmosphere to build gradually before adding multiple layers of hypnotic, high-energy elements that electrified the dancefloor.
The result was an exhilarating and dynamic performance, making it one of the most memorable highlights of this year’s Mostra Festival.

PREMIERE: Atypikal - Landing [Academeia Records]

The relentless churn of techno welcomes a fresh face: Academeia Records, a Copenhagen outfit ready to launch into the stratosphere. Their debut offering, a sprawling 22-track compilation titled "Transparent World," promises a voyage through the genre's diverse landscape. We find established figures like Anthony Linell and Space Drum Meditation alongside the local legend Martinez,a veteran with years etched in the electronic music scene.

Our focus today is "Landing," a collaborative effort by the Athenian duo Atypikal. The track starts subtly, a slow burn of tension that builds for two minutes before erupting into a full-blown techno odyssey. Atypikal throws everything at the wall here: relentless percussion lays the foundation, catchy melodic sequences weave through the mix, and the kick drum pulsates like a throbbing heart. Swirling synth lines add a layer of spacey intrigue, a welcome touch considering the track's relentless drive.

A promising start for Academeia, "Landing" and the rest of "Transparent World" launch on June 21st via the newly formed label.

REVIEW: COLA REN - Forest Drone EP [QEONE]

In today's bustling music scene, where reinvention is constant, having a distinct and recognizable style can set a label or artist apart. Founded nearly two years ago by the innovative Polygonia, QEONE has developed a reputation for its intricate rhythmic journeys, occasionally bordering on esoteric explorations that connect percussive complexity with pristine synth layers. This fine-tuned aesthetic remains undiluted in the label's latest offering, "Forest Drone" EP crafted by rising Chinese producer COLA REN. Through four meticulously produced tracks, this EP traverses a varied terrain of downtempo, breakbeat, and ambient genres, each laced with a unique groove and atmosphere.

PREMIERE: Luna Ludmila - Change of Scenery [Something Happening Somewhere]

More than a decade has passed since Nuno Dos Santos launched Something Happening Somewhere, a record label that has been a breeding ground for Dutch and international talent. The label remains dedicated to fostering innovation and preserving the cherished styles that have defined electronic music over the years.

Ashley Haak, known as Luna Ludmila, is a Utrecht-based producer and DJ who has become a familiar face in our community. She has seen remarkable growth in the past few years. Following her contributions to the Sway compilation in 2020 and a remix for Dwaalgast in 2021 on SoHaSo, she is now ready to release her four-track EP, Hoisin Dreams, which celebrates uplifting dub influences that are perfect for the dancefloor.

Today's premiere, "Change of Scenery," will instantly take you back to the '90s and early 2000s dance floors. This track pays tribute to the influential sounds of Underworld, blending deep techno synths with a stomping kick drum, offering a fresh take on a timeless formula.
"Change of Scenery" is an energizing track that will undoubtedly be in heavy rotation this summer. The Hoisin Dreams EP will be released on June 7 via Something Happening Somewhere.

PREMIERE: Viels - Exponential [NODE]

Node Recordings returns with another great collection of techno tracks on the Falling Textures EP. The Spanish Label, with its very coherent identity in titles, artwork, and sound, presents another 5-track EP that celebrates techno.

Our premiere track is from none other than Italian mental techno expert and Acquario resident Viels. “Exponential” is a testament to Viels’ mind-boggling and energetic high-class techno. Staying true to the hypnotic realms of the genre, the track also has an industrial and highly generative appeal.

The track’s specialty lies in the intriguing interplay of two distinct sound elements that haunt you from both near and far, and this is the absolute strength of this track. Talking about captivating music and how a sense of hypnosis might be created: here we have a perfect example of it. “Exponential” is carried by powerful waves of sound that instill a spiraling and exponential effect, playing with the listener’s mind. This track is engineered to sweep you away into other spheres, only to bring you back and sweep you away again.

The 5-tracker “Falling Textures” will be released on May 29th and features tracks from talent like Acaera, Aögram, RPTLS, and Sam Wilson.

REVIEW: Nils Edte & Eafhm - Glossolalia EP [Predawn_Records]

Across oceans and continents, the musical scenes of today stretch. Personal, and artistic connections made possible via technology have opened the door for an incredible amount of musical genres to grow and flourish in their respective ‘corners of the internet’. With platforms like Soundcloud and Bandcamp allowing a community driven approach to the enjoyment of these genres, the last decade and more could be considered a ‘golden age’ of music and its consumption for many. Along these lines do we look for an extended review today of, what could be considered a fine example of this, among so many other wonderful collaborations and releases that are released every week, too many to be named honestly.

Evelyn Malinowski (fka Experimental Housewife), a Bay Area underground legend and founder of Perfect Location Records, now known as exhouse, graces our "Delayed With..." series with a truly unique mix.

exhouse's musical wisdom is a potent blend of 25 years spent digging for vinyl and spinning records on the radio. Trying to pin down their sound is like chasing smoke – constantly shifting, always surprising. But one thing's sure: exhouse thrives in the deep end, where grooves simmer, edges bite, and mellow vibes meet meditative states. Their releases have found homes on Mirror Tapes, Identity Spectrum, Jacktone, and Schmer Records, with several self-released gems.

VIDEO PREMIERE: Lina Filipovich - Silver Ghost [Blank Mind]

Paris-based artist Lina Filipovich is set to release her third album, Music for an Imaginary Dancefloor. This album ventures into the intriguing space where club rhythms meet abstract, experimental sounds. Written between June and December 2022, the LP emerged from improvisations on analog synthesizers and is characterized by its dynamic energy and rich, layered textures.

Our premiere today, "Silver Ghost," combines atonal drones and atmospheric elements to create a moody, cinematic experience. The track's gritty, bleepy downtempo vibe flirts with the experimental, making it perfect for listeners who appreciate intricate, thought-provoking music.

April was a whirlwind of electronic discovery. We kicked off the month celebrating our imprint Never Late's second release, Mjulev's stunning album "Clouds Are The Better Birds." Konduku and Nous'klaer Audio capped off the incredible The K Series with its fifth chapter, while Javier Salazar returned to their home at rdg tribe. Danza Nativa threw a five-year party with a massive 15-track compilation, and Kaspiann made a bold statement with his debut on Mantis. From Barcelona, Bastien on Red Edge served up some seriously trippy ambient experimentation, while Lb Honne's sophomore LP on Project Indigo brought warm, lush vibes. Daniel Danieli's star continues to rise with another gem on F-on's Alpenglühen imprint. Rounding out the month, Romi & BLNDR and NUG delivered some deep, genre-bending dub and downtempo sounds.

We took a few days to unwind and soak in the afterglow of our recent Delayed Getaway at The Barn. Nestled in the Catskills forest, it felt like a dream. Spending four days with loved ones, surrounded by incredible music and completely disconnected from the daily grind – that's the recipe for pure soul restoration, wouldn't you agree? The Barn truly feels like our own little slice of paradise, and we can't wait to make many more memories there in the years to come.

Delayed with... Alex Tomb

Starting a residency at Klubd in Nicosia at the age of 23, Alex affected the electronic scene in Cyprus. Since 2013, he has been a resident at the renowned Berlin underground daytime party, STAUB—a space recognized for its sense of community and diverse electronic music offerings. Alex’s career features performances at iconic venues such as Tresor, Gare Porto, and Kantine am Berghain.
Capparis Spinosa is the imprint he founded in 2017 to present his music, including exclusive collaborations and remixes. His releases on Claudio PRC’s label “12” and the consistently dancefloor-appropriate release on Maeve exemplify the artist’s commitment to expression over confinement. The Paludose Canter EP showcases his profound and emotive dancefloor expressions traveling across various moods.

Delayed with… Shani & Heliopora [Delayed x La Vallée Électrique]

Somewhere in the south of France hides a festive oasis that, isolated from the world, comes to life every single year under the warm June sun. Organized since 2016 by Melifera Records, the aim of La Vallée Électrique festival is to bring together a community of artists and cultural stakeholders. For a weekend, electronic music & projections enhance the song of cicadas and the dancers the movements of nature in perfect harmony. An intimate experience in the heart of La Drôme Provençale, bringing together more than 600 electronic music enthusiasts from all over Europe for a timeless moment of nature, music, and discovery.

The 2024 edition of this festival will take place from 14 to 16 June.

This year, the line-up includes exclusive encounters with Feral & Ntogn, figureheads of Italian label Hypnus, and German duo Dycide & MTRL, representing IO Records. Clarence Rise and Café de la Jungle will also be on board, alongside some of France's finest electronic talents: Hewan Aman, Tauceti, Sindh, and many more. PREMIERE: Caldera - Ascending Through Leaves [Melifera Records]

Malte Schumann, or Caldera as he's known to us, is a producer with a knack for innovation. His music consistently feels fresh, unexpected, and engaging. Oddball in the best way. From Kimochi Sound and Nummer to Bokhari Records and Flippen Disks, Caldera brings a fresh perspective to whatever electronic subgenre he tackles.

His latest offering, the "Triangular Passage" EP on Melifera Records, is no exception. Inspired by his set and visit to La Vallée Électrique Festival in 2023, this genre-fluid project takes us into the darker corners of electronic music, drawing influence from the natural world and its sounds.
Our premiere today, "Ascending Through Leaves," straddles the line between halftime and low-slung techno, a territory we at Delayed are always happy to explore.
