Frontier Psychiatrist Reanimated
70 artists have teamed up to reanimate the film clip for Frontier Psychiatrist by The Avalanches in a ridiculous mish-mash of styles, and you absolutely owe it to yourself to watch it: https://youtu.be/hV38-JImG1w
Last night I won the Best Innovation award at the SA Music Awards.
I can’t thank you all enough for keeping me going over the past couple of years.
I haven’t run a radiothon this year because I haven’t felt like my output has been enough in the past two years to warrant it - plus, hey, it’s hard to justify asking for money for something like this when gigs can barely happen and artists and venues have lost so much of their income.
I wish I’d been able to do more and I always had more in mind, but honestly it feels like I’ve spent more time applying for jobs than working on PPP in the past two years, and most places would rather just hire someone who doesn’t have a project like this on the go.
That creates the conundrum of the Adelaide music scene: it’s far easier to be a part of it when you have a job outside of it. It doesn’t matter if your name’s on the door if you can’t afford a bus ticket into town.
I’m in the extremely privileged position of having a job at the moment, but I can’t keep juggling everything and something’s gotta give.
I’ve been working myself sick trying to make this work and I just can’t afford to keep it up financially, mentally and emotionally.
There’s been 4,794 downloads of the play / pause / play app. It’ll be removed from the app stores in the next couple of weeks. The radio stream will continue until the end of the year so we can do another Heaps Good 50. I’ll try and update the music rotation a bit between now and then to keep new stuff in.
After that, I dunno.
Last night the Minister for Innovation and Skills, David Pisoni, announced a new round of funding support for the local industry. It’s important and welcome, but it’s not enough. It’s a band-aid solution for an industry that’s been kneecapped by a global pandemic, and doesn’t remotely support ongoing innovations like play / pause / play, Sunny Side Uploads, Space Jams and the other initiatives nominated for this award.

play / pause / play is all about connecting local artists with local audiences. And it's working.
More than 2300 people have downloaded the play / pause / play radio app. We've played music from more than 700 Australian artists, including more than 250 artists from South Australia.
In our recent survey, 80% of listeners said that they've discovered a new band through play / pause / play, and gone on to buy their music or merch, or a ticket to their show - or even approach them to play a show together.
We're building a more-connected live music scene in Adelaide, but we need your help to keep going.
There are ongoing costs to keep broadcasting, and we need your support during this radiothon to keep showcasing what our state has to offer.
