*President Ruto Commends Nairobi’s School Feeding Initiative as Program Reaches 30 Million Meals, Benefiting Over 310,000 Students*

*Tuesday, 29th October 2024*

President William Ruto commended Nairobi County’s “Dishi Na County” school feeding program for its impact on student retention and combating food insecurity, as the initiative marked a milestone of 30 million meals served. Speaking at the Global School Meals Coalition ministerial meeting, President Ruto highlighted the importance of school feeding programs in Kenya’s education strategy.

“I am very proud of what Nairobi County is doing in feeding our learners. Food for Education has done a remarkable job to provide for them,” President Ruto said, underscoring the initiative’s role in fostering a conducive learning environment for students.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja announced that the “Dishi Na County” initiative has reached the milestone of 30 million meals served within 14 months of its launch. This program has provided nourishment to over 310,000 students across 230 public schools in 17 subcounties of the city. During a recent coalition meeting, Governor Sakaja highlighted the program’s transformative impact, particularly for students in informal settlements.

“‘Dishi Na County’ aims to reach even more schools and has already provided over 30 million meals at an affordable cost of just five shillings,” Sakaja noted. He added that no child is ever denied a meal due to inability to pay, thanks to support from partners and the national government.

Since its launch 14 months ago, the program has offered nutritious hot meals daily, a factor Governor Sakaja says has boosted school enrollment by 34 percent. Beyond nourishing students, the initiative has also provided economic opportunities for local farmers and vendors supplying the program with food.

“Thousands of Kenyans now earn a living because of ‘Dishi Na County.’ We buy produce from our farmers across the country and have employed thousands to make this program work,” Sakaja stated.

The program has been a lifeline for Nairobi’s children, bringing both nourishment and joy. Dominic Muirigi, a driver delivering meals to schools in Kibera, shared the heartwarming reception he receives daily. “Even matatus give way to our trucks when they know we’re delivering food,” he said. “Seeing those smiles makes every journey worth it.”

As “Dishi Na County” continues to serve 310,000 students this term, Governor Sakaja lauded the partnerships that have made it possible. “The smiles of these children are the ultimate testament to the program’s impact,” he affirmed.

Nairobi City County's excavators and cranes continue to clear the site of the collapsed eight-storey building in the Kahawa West area.

The county has announced that three adjacent buildings have shown signs of defects and have been issued with Enforcement Notices and tenants advised to vacate these respective buildings.

"We have advised residents of adjacent buildings to evacuate until an audit of the neighbouring buildings to the fateful building to establish structural stability. The audit will extend to cover all other highrise buildings in the entire area of Kahawa West. Members of the public are requested to cooperate with the officials during this audit exercise, which will be carried out in a civil and non-distruptive as possible,” said Patrick Mbogo, County Executive, Built Environment.

Earlier, Nairobi County and other teams were fully engaged in rubble excavations and clearance. The County's Multi sectoral team continues to man the command centre to coordinate operations.

“We will also ensure Patrick Rwamba, the building's owner, is arrested and arraigned in court,” said Mr Mbogo.

Uhuru Park is now fully operational, putting to rest recent rumors about its closure.

According to records from park officials, the iconic green space has attracted over 2,000 visitors over the past two weekends, signaling its growing popularity since reopening. The park was temporarily closed due to damage inflicted during citywide protests in June; however, it has been in operation since September 28th, 2024.

Maureen Njeri, the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Green Nairobi, addressed concerns surrounding the closure, saying:

“The park was closed temporarily for safety reasons after incidents of vandalism during the protests. We had to ensure that all damages were fully repaired, especially to key features like the caravan and airplane sculptures,” Njeri said.

Visitors are required to present identification upon entry. According to Njeri, over 2,000 people have visited the park over the past two weekends, a sign of its rising popularity.

“Uhuru Park is a vital part of Nairobi’s heritage, and we’re happy to see Nairobians returning to enjoy its beauty,” said Njeri. “We’ve restored the monuments, cleaned the ponds, and ensured that everything is in top shape for visitors.”

Meanwhile, renovations at Central Park, located nearby, are still underway. The park is expected to be completed by December 2024, and like Uhuru Park, it will be handed over to the Nairobi City County once the work is finished.

“We’re very excited about the upcoming reopening of Central Park as well. Nairobi’s green spaces are critical for residents’ well-being, and we’re committed to maintaining them,” Njeri said, adding that the county will continue collaborating with the National Government on such projects.

Uhuru Park now boasts scenic views of Nairobi’s skyline, including landmarks such as Upper Hill and the Nairobi Expressway. Visitors can also enjoy a botanical trail, restored historical monuments, peaceful ponds, and spacious seating areas.

“These parks are free to access, and we encourage Nairobians to enjoy them responsibly. However, for those who want to host events, we have made the space available for booking at a small fee,” the CEC added.

With its doors reopened, Uhuru Park stands as a testament to Nairobi’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty, while Central Park’s completion promises another green oasis for the city’s residents by the end of the year.

*Nairobi United FC Under New Ownership as Governor Sakaja Takes the Helm*

*Yesterday Friday, 27th September 2024*

Nairobi United Football Club is set to undergo a major transformation under new ownership, as Nairobi Governor @⁨Sakaja Governor⁩ takes over the reins through the Sakaja Foundation. Known for his passion for sports and youth development, the Governor has ambitious plans to elevate the club to national prominence.

“You will never lack. I want you to wake up, work, and think football. Put all your energy here; I believe in winning. Let’s be winners,” Governor Sakaja passionately told the team during the announcement.

Sakaja emphasized his commitment to supporting the club through the foundation but urged players to maintain discipline and a winning mindset.

"Be your brother’s keeper, be in the right mindset, and we shall be winners. That is the story of Nairobi United,” he added.

The Governor expressed his vision for the club to join the Kenya Premier League, asserting that it is possible with hard work and dedication.

"We must work together—no relaxing. If you relax, we will replace you. But if you work hard, the team will grow,” he warned.

In addition to his plans for Nairobi United, Governor Sakaja highlighted his administration’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure in the city. He noted that, apart from the existing Dandora Stadium, work is underway on the Woodley and Kihumbuini stadiums, which are expected to be completed soon.

Governor Sakaja has been a vocal advocate for sports development in Nairobi. His successful initiative, the Sakaja Cup, brought together teams from across the city in a highly competitive tournament last year.

"The Sakaja Super Cup will begin in October, and it will be bigger and better,” he confirmed.

The transformation of Nairobi United is set to include significant investments in training facilities, the recruitment of new talent, and enhanced support for the club’s management and players.

“Nairobi United has immense potential, and we are committed to turning it into a team that can compete with the best in the country,” Sakaja said.

This latest move reflects Governor Sakaja’s broader vision of nurturing youth talent and promoting sports as a unifying force in the community. With his leadership, the future looks bright for Nairobi United and the city’s sports scene at large.
