Yusuf Simick’s mother, Lucy Simik, passed away this morning at the age of 89. She had been unwell for a few days and was undergoing treatment at a private nursing home, where she breathed her last.

Churmit Lepcha, president of the Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association

Churmit, 40, travelled around 660km from Kalimpong with her friend Khusboo Chhetri, 26.

The woman dressed in traditional Lepcha attire said she travelled the distance to Calcutta to support the inclusive character of the country.

“Our chief minister Mamata Banerjee has done a lot for our community and has tried to preserve the spirit of brotherhood in Bengal. When I heard that she was organising an interfaith rally on January 22, I decided to travel from Kalimpong to Calcutta,” Churmit said.

Bengal CM, who led the march themed on 'religion is personal, the festival is universal', was accompanied by various religious heads, followed by thousands of women, men, youths and children dressed up to represent various faiths

Twenty-two-year-old Sameer Kali, who was transporting water bottles, soft drinks and ice cream boxes, had just been looted of his goods at Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s political rally at Lakshmeshwar in Gadag district on Friday, April 28. A video of Sameer in tears went viral on social media. Despite imploring them not to loot his goods, people who attended the rally grabbed the cold drinks from his vehicle.

Message from a Reader:

Schools in the Hills are learning newer techniques everyday, it seems, to dupe parents. My kid goes to a reputed boarding school in Kurseong, he will be in grade 6 later this month.

I wanted to give him a glimpse of Physics, Chemistry and Biology as soon as the results were out, but I couldn’t, using their school text books.

Why?

Book lists aren’t provided by the school anymore. The school allots a particular bookstore in town from where parents are forced to buy the books, that too, the information is sent towards the fag end of the winter vacations.

Apparently, only two sides have the book list - the principal of the school and the bookstore.

What if parents want to save some money and buy certain books from their own sources in Siliguri and Kolkata?

Not allowed! Why? Because, “commission” for the schools are more important?
